Elite Trimworks Post Defense Square Wood Column

Installation, Care and Finishing

Square Wood Columns are not designed to be used in a freestanding application. An internal structural support will be required on freestanding applications. Top must be completely covered with non-porous material and sealed to prevent moisture from entering top of column. Store in a clean, dry area, not in damp, moist, or extremely humid. Wood is hygroscopic and dimensionally influenced by changes in the moisture content of its surrounding environment.

To maintain manufacturer’s warranty, porch posts must be installed according to these instructions, and routine inspection and maintenance must be performed annually. Maintenance includes cleaning, touchup of scratches, mars, etc., and re-painting as needed to maintain a properly painted and sealed surface.

  1. Remove the enclosed E-Lock Cap and Base Trim from column.

  2. If the Square Wood Column is not factory primed, immediately upon delivery it must be primed on all sides and the top with a high-quality acrylic primer.

  3. The porch post must not be cut or trimmed from the bottom. The Post Saver mounting block and moisture barrier seal must be left intact. Any trimming must be from the top end of the column to maintain the warranty.

  4. Mark the location of column on beam [a] and platform, [b] then measure from beam to platform [c] for each column. If necessary, trim post to length (cut only the top). If trimmed, the top of the column must be primed again using high-quality acrylic primer.

  5. Surfaces to be painted must be thoroughly dry and free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax, chalk, and other contaminants.

  6. Paint all surfaces, including the Cap and Base Trim, with two coats of a high quality exterior acrylic-latex or oil-based paint. Temperature and humidity have a major effect on drying and may affect paint film characteristics. Paint should be applied at product, surface, and air temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit unless the product label specifies differently. Relative humidity should be below 85%.

  7. After painting, the entire top surface of the column must be caulked, including the Cap and Base Trim when installed, then a bead of caulking applied around the post where it meets the Post Saver mounting block.

  8. Erect column and set into position under the beam. If the beam was raised for column replacement, lower the beam onto column. Using non-corrosive screws, fasten Post Saver mounting block to the deck. At the top, drill holes for attaching column to beam, then caulk [j] before using screws to secure.

  9. Please note the correct assembly of the E-Z Lock Joint for the Cap and Base Trim shown below.

  10. Nails MUST be installed only in the edges shown (3 and 4). Installing on the other edges may result in open seams.

  11. Use Polyurethane Glue both joint edges; slide first joint together

  12. Push second joint closed

  13. Nail this joint first

  14. Nail this joint second

Notes:
Always use non-corrosive fasteners—galvanized, stainless steel, etc. for exterior installations, and always follow polyurethane glue and paint manufacturer’s instructions.

*Column must not be allowed to collect water, debris, etc. If the top of the column extends beyond the soffit/beam, the cap must be flashed with lead, copper, aluminum, etc. to prevent entry of water or foreign materials.

Field repairs and touch-ups are the responsibility of the installing contractor and painter. Field touch-ups shall include the filling of nail or screw holes, refinishing of raw surfaces resulting from job filling, repair of job-inflicted scratches and mars, and the final cleaning of surfaces prior to painting.

Attaching optional rail

Cut rail and balusters to length. If using wood rail and balusters, prime all surfaces, paint all surfaces, then seal ends with silicon or exterior-grade caulk, allowing to cure fully before assembly. If attaching rail with L-brackets, remember that all holes drilled into the post should be caulked before placing screws, and any areas that are chiseled for the brackets should be primed, painted and caulked before attaching.

*To maintain manufacturer’s warranty: Porch posts are not designed to be in a free standing application. An internal structural support will be required on free standing applications. Any trimming must be from the top end of the porch post. All wood surfaces must be primed, ends must be sealed with caulk, and a high-quality exterior topcoat applied. A plastic plinth, elevated bracket, or aluminum plinth must be used between post and platform. Top must be completely covered & sealed to prevent moisture from entering top of post.
