Pump Down Procedure for High Pressure Refrigeration Systems
In systems running with low side (suction line) pressure above 65 PSI / 4.5 Bar (such as R-410a) the following pump down (also known as placing the system in “shallow vacuum”) procedure will help make it easier to inject syringe and bag on valve aerosol packaged additives into the refrigeration system by lowering the refrigerant pressure at the suction line valve.
-
Turn off electrical power to unit and connect refrigerant manifold gauge to unit high and low side ports.
-
Close liquid line (high side) service valve and power on compressor to pump refrigerant into condenser.
-
Allow compressor to run until low side (suction) gauge on manifold shows a pressure of 40 to 50 psi (2.8 to 3.4 Bar).
WARNING: Do not pump system down completely as low pressure cut-off or high pressure relief switches may engage. -
When pressure on suction gauge reaches between 40 and 50 psi (2.8 to 3.4 Bar), turn compressor off and immediately close suction line (low side) valve. Most of the system’s refrigerant is now stored in the condenser allowing easier injection of the refrigeration additives.
-
Add product to system via suction line (low side) valve. Once product is dispensed remove hose from low side service port.
-
After charging hose is disconnected from system, open liquid line and suction valves to allow the refrigerant back into the system. Charge system with refrigerant to achieve correct system pressure. DO NOT overcharge. Run the refrigeration system continuously for 1 hour to allow product to fully circulate in system.
