HIXX’s Guide to Stress-Free Pet Grooming

  1. Consult Your Veterinarian
To be safe, check with your veterinarian before clipping. If your pet has a skin condition, please refer to your veterinarian for tre atman, and do not shave your pet at home.

  2. Brush out Coat Thoroughly
Sand and mats can build up in your pet’s hair. If they hit the high-speed blades, it will reduce the blade service life or, even worse, cause safety hazards. Therefore, before using the clipper, give your pet a nice brush. Follow the direction of hair growth, and patiently brush out all the sand, dirt, tangles, and mats. Do not wet your pet’s coat at this point, as this will make brushing more difficult.

  3. Give Your Pet a Bath
Bathe your pet to clean his or her coat and skin. We recommend using a mild, tear-free shampoo formulated specifically for pets. Massage and rinse thoroughly.

  4. Dry and Brush Again
Once bathed, towel dry and blow dry your pet. And then give him or her another brush. Your pet’s hair should be fully dry and free of tangles when you are done.

  5.  Choose A Safe
Place Choose a well-lit indoor place to do the job. For best results, the light should be adequately bright and evenly distributed. You need a safe, nonslip surface so that your pet does not slip and fall. If your pet is a cat or a small to medium-sized dog, a grooming table is ideal for the clipping to be performed at a comfortable working height. If your pet is a large dog, you can work on the floor.

  6.  Restrain Your
Pet To prevent your pet from moving much while you perform clipping, you need to hold him or her in place. Since you will need both hands to do the clipping, you can use a grooming restraint to secure your pet (but do not leave your pet alone on the table in a restraint). Or it may be helpful to ask another person who is familiar with your pet (a family member or neighbor, etc.) to help. If your pet is at all resistant, calm him or her down first.

  7.  Desensitize Your Pet
Make sure your pet is in a calm mood. If it is their first cut, it is essential to acclimate your pet. The sound of the clipper operating may trouble some sensitive pets. Tum the clipper on and set it to Quiet mode, and run it close to your pet’s ear for a while to get them used to the noise. In addition, you can help your pet develop a positive connection with the clipper by offering them petting, praise, or treats during clipping.

  8. Oil the Blades
Blades should be oiled before, during, and after each use. For instructions, please refer to the Blade Maintenance section.
For your pet’s safety, use the clippers dedicated oil. Do not use hair oil, grease, or any oil mixed with kerosene or other solvents at any time.

  9. Move the Clipper Properly
Clip with the growth of the hair. Otherwise, you will create harsh and uneven lines. Move your clipper properly by using slow and gentle strokes.
Avoid applying downward pressure to the clippers, as this is likely to cause damage to your pet’s skin.

  10. Order of Clipping s
Generally, it is recommended to start clipping from the most challenging areas. Because your pet will tend to become more impatient as time progresses. Typically, the head, paws, underarms, stomach, and bottom are more difficult to clip. The neck, back, and chest are easier.
The order can be adjusted accordingly. If your pet is already very nervous at the beginning, you can start from easier areas—for example, the back of the neck—to allow your pet to adapt.
Unless your pet is completely still, it is not recommended to use the clipper on your pet’s face, especially around the eyes. Instead, you can use scissors for fine trimming.

  11. Paws
Paws easily pick up sand and dirt. Before you clip the hair on your pet’s paws, make sure that the hair has been thoroughly cleaned, otherwise it may damage the blades and cause safety hazards.
Keeping the hair on your pet’s paws short will help reduce the risk of mats building up between their pads which causes painful walks and even injuries. Keep in mind that paws are very sensitive for dogs and cats. Go
slow and gentle to give your pet time to adjust. Use the clipper to shave the hair on top of the paws and then carefully trim between the toes. While clipping, check your pet’s paws for any signs of injury. For better grooming results, pair up with HIXX Pet Nail Grinder. Please visit HIXX’s Amazon store for more information.

  12. Underarms
To trim the underarms, make sure your pet is still and lift his or her leg with a gentle motion. Clip with the growth of the hair—from the armpit to the leg.
The skin in the underarm area is very delicate and sensitive. Check the blade temperature regularly. If the temperature gets too high, take a break to cool down the blades—please refer to the Blade Maintenance section.

  13. Sanitary Area
Clip the hair on your pet’s back and bottom to help your pet maintain hygiene when going to the bathroom.
Clip with the growth of the hair. Go slow and gentle, using almost no pressure against the skin. Watch out for the folds on the skin around the anus. Be careful not to nick the nipples and genital area.
The sanitary area is very delicate and sensitive. Check the blade temperature regularly. If the tempera ture gets too high, take a break to cool down the blades please refer to the Blade Maintenance section.
