Paw Handling
You need to get your pet used to having his/her paws touched handled before introducing the nail grinder. Massage the paw gently and touch the nails while offering your pet treats. Repeat this exercise a few times daily until your pet shows no resistance. -
Check the Paws for Abnormalities
While you’re at it, check the paws for debris, ticks, odd nail color, or any signs of injury. Bring any wounds to the attention of your veterinarian before you attempt to trim the nails. -

Do not do any actual grinding yet. You may need to repeat the above steps a few times until your pet consistently remains calm with the grinder.
Safety Tips
-
Identify the Quick
Before grinding your pet’s nails, you need to be able to identify the quick of the nail. The quick is the soft core of the nail. The quick is very sensitive because it contains blood vessels and nerve endings. Should you accidentally cut or grind into the quick, the nail will start to bleed and it is painful for your pet. For light-colored nails, the quick is usually pink. For dark- colored nails, the quick is usually a dark spot, which is harder to see. In both cases, turning on the auxiliary lighting helps to better observe the quick. A rule of thumb for the proper angle at which to trim a pet’s nails is 45 degrees upwards from the bottom of the paw. Grind a little at a time, and keep checking for the quick.

Secure Your Pe
Your pet may become nervous in the presence of the nail grinder so it is best to secure your pet. Since you will need both hands to grind the nails, it may be helpful to ask another person who is familiar with your to assist in restraining your pet. -
Keep Hair away from the Grinding Wheel r-
If pet hair is accidentally caught in the nail grinder, immediately tum off the grinder and untangle the hair. For pets with particularly long hair, it is recommended to keep the protective cap on and grind through one of the openings.
How to Use Your HIXX Pet Nail Grinder
-
Turn on the nail grinder and select a power mode. Use the Quiet mode for particularly skittish pets. Use the Turbo mode for large dogs.
Keep the nail grinder away from the nail when turning on, or the grinder may grab the nail cause loss of control or injury. -
Hold a paw with your non-dominant hand and spread the toes.
Carefully hold back fur so you can access the nails. Hold the grinder in your dominant hand and get your pet used to the sound. Support the paw in one hand while operating the nail grinder in the other hand. This is more comfortable for your pet as it lessens vibration on the paw. -
Press the grinding wheel lightly against the nail for 2-3 seconds at a time. Use a continuous side-to-side motion when grinding each nail. Holding the tip in one place too long can cause unevenness and overheating.
Do not keep the grinding wheel against the nail for longer than 3 seconds at a time. -
Do not apply excessive force to the nail when grinding.
Let the speed of the grinder do the work. Pressure may cause the nail to get too hot, resulting in discomfort for your pet. -
Instead of attending to one nail at a time, you can also briefly grind each nail on one paw, and then the other, in several passes.
This allows time for the nails to cool. You may repeat this process as needed. -
You can check periodically if the grinding wheel overheats. Make sure to tum the grinder off, wait for the grinding wheel to stop spinning, and then touch it quickly to the back of your hand. If it feels hot, let the nail grinder cool down before resuming grinding.
Never touch the grinding wheel while it is still spinning. -
Praise your pet frequently during the session and at the end.
If possible, have a helper offer treats while you grind your pet’s nails.
Be patient. Take a break if your dog starts excessively growling, yelping, or otherwise seems too anxious to proceed.
