CAUTIONS AND INSTALLATION INFORMATION

Cautions

  • This product is not for use with oxygen, either pure oxygen or gases with a significant proportion of oxygen.
  • The purifier’s gettering alloy is pyrophoric at operating or ambient temperature.
  • Use with significant amounts of oxygen can result in the combustion of the material, potential damage to the surrounding area and possible injury.
  • The installation process of this product must fully respect the installation procedure described in the user’s manual.
  • All steps of the procedure must be strictly followed to avoid any damage to the product or any accident caused by any bad manipulation of the product.

Special instructions for Hydrogen Purifier installation

  • To facilitate maintenance activities and emergency cases, isolation valve installation is required.
  • Some isolation valves at the inlet and the outlet shall be installed at an accessible location, so that the hydrogen flow can be shut off when necessary.
  • A bypass valve is also appropriated to keep the flow to the analytical instruments connected to the outlet of the purifier.
  • High impurity levels (air) in the gas stream could cause the high-temperature alarm.
  • In such an event, purifier power must be turned off and isolation valves must be closed.
  • A pressure vent must be installed at the outlet of the purifier. In case of high-level air contamination, a high-pressure increase may occur in the purifier, a relief valve must open to reduce the system pressure.
  • In no event shall LDetek Inc. be liable for any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damage whether based on contract, tort, or any other legal theory and whether advised of the possibility of such damages.

Installation steps

  1. After removing the purifier from the shipping container and protective wrapping, ensure that both end caps are tight and that the unit is in good condition.
  2. Make sure that the fittings in the gas line match those supplied with the purifier.
  3. Start the flow of purge gas (minimum purity of 5N) through the gas line before the purifier inlet to purge the piping at approximately 100sccm for a minimum of 20 minutes.
  4. While holding the purifier in the gas stream, quickly remove the inlet cap, and make a connection with the fitting on the gas line. Tighten as recommended by the fitting manufacturer. Leak check the fitting connection.
    • Note for high-purity version: A new face seal must be installed each time to ensure good sealing.
  5. Remove the outlet end cap and quickly make a connection to the outlet gas line. Let it vent to the atmosphere for 30 minutes at approximately 100sccm to eliminate air from the getter material.
    • Caution! The getter should never be heated when air is present
  6. Connect the purifier to the electrical supply.
    • Caution! Be sure you connect the right operating voltage
  7. With the power on the purifier, let the gas vent to the atmosphere for 3 hours to allow complete purging of the unit.
    • Note: The cartridge is heated by a step of 50Celcius every 15 minutes for a total time of 2 hours to get the operating temperature. (When the purifier is ready to operate, the yellow and red lights must be off and the green light stays on)
  8. After the purging process, make sure there is no alarm and you’re ready to go.

temperature. It could be caused by air contaminations, heater problems, temperature sensor problems or other reasons. Please contact the LDetek factory. Such an alarm can result in a hazardous situation. Please refer to the Warning section in this manual.

RS-232 SERIAL COMMUNICATION

  • The LDP1000 has a serial port that allows communication to be transmitted to the Serial acquisition software.
  • The standard Windows Hyper Terminal software is suggested to get the acquisition of the data transmitted by the LDP1000.
  • The data transmitted are the Getter#1 operating temperature and Getter#2 operating temperature.

NOTE: Be sure to use an inverted DB9 cable. The pins #3 and #4 must be inverted.

See below a block diagram of the electrical connections

How to setup HyperTerminal

See below the instructions to setup the HyperTerminal:

  1. Select the Serial Port of your PC where you have connected the serial cable. In this case, it was com # 8
  2. The Baud rate must be set at 9600.
  3. Bits must be set at 8
  4. Parity: none
  • Once the HyperTerminal is configured, open the connection and the data will start to be transmitted to the Hyper Terminal software.
  • See the screenshot below that demonstrates an example of the data transmitted.
  • The data are transmitted every 5 seconds.
  • Temperature_1 is the temperature of the Getter #1 (also called 1st bed of purification) Temperature_2 is the temperature of the Getter #2 (also called 2e bed of purification)LDetek-LDP1000-Gas-Purifier-FIG-6
  • This feature is used as a troubleshooting tool. In the case of a malfunction of the LDP1000 or deviation temperature alarm, you can get connected and get the operating temperatures.
  • It gives the chance to know where the problem comes from.

MAINTENANCE

  • In normal operation, the LDP1000 does not require any maintenance. Please refer to the lifetime and the LED indication section of this manual for detailed explanations of the alarms.
  • The LDP1000 cartridge can be easily changed on-site. See the following procedure that explains how to do it. Please contact LDetek at info@ldetek.com to get a replacement cartridge.
  • The Compact-LDP1000 is a disposable version and doesn’t offer getter replacement.

Cartridge replacement procedure

  • (only available with the LDP1000 standard and large series)
  • Step 1: Preparing the unit → Turn off the power on the LDP1000 unit and allow 2 hours to cool down, shut off the gas, and remove the inlet and outlet tubing connections and install plugs on it.LDetek-LDP1000-Gas-Purifier-FIG-12LDetek-LDP1000-Gas-Purifier-FIG-13
  • Step 6: You can take off the old getter and install the new one by following the same steps in the reverse order, except for replacing the front panel.
  • Step 7: After replacing with a new getter, before installing the front panel, turn the switch on temporally and short both pins of connector J7 to reset the microcontroller.
  • To short the pin, simply use a screwdriver or a small metal tool to short both pins for about 1-2 seconds. After, you can turn off the power and re-install the front panel.
  • The unit is now ready to operate normally on gas.LDetek-LDP1000-Gas-Purifier-FIG-14
  • NOTE : MAKE SURE TO WELL PURGED THE LINE BEFORE CONNECTING TO THE INLET (10 MINUTES PURGE). DO NOT EXPOSE THE DEVICE TO AIR; MAKE SURE TO QUICKLY CONNECT INLET AND OUTLET TO AVOID AIR CONTAMINATION OF THE UNIT.
  • IF THIS NOTE ISN’T PROPERLY RESPECTED, SOME DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO THE LDP1000 DEVICE. SEE WARNING NOTICE FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT RISK ASSOCIATED WITH AIR CONTAMINATION.

Note for high purity version:

  • A new face seal must be installed each time to ensure good sealing.
  • Disposing of spent getter cartridges
  • Obtain a return material authorization number from LDetek. Send an email to info@ldetek.com to do so.
  • The RMA # should appear on the outside of the box.

Regeneration mode (available for O2/CO2 model only)

  • Once the purifier absorber material is saturated, it will need to be regenerated. If the gas line containing the purifier is to be vented to air, the purifier should be isolated from the air, to prevent saturating the absorber.
  • If the purifier has been exposed to air for more than 1 hour, a regeneration will be required.
  • Regeneration interval under normal operation (based on 24 hours/day, 7 days/week). Considering a nominal flow rate of 200sccm with 5ppm H2O inlet impurity level, the regeneration interval will be every 6 months.

To regenerate the purifier, you may either:

  • A ) Obtain a return material authorization number from LDetek. Send an email to info@ldetek.com to do so. The RMA # should appear on the outside of the box.
  • B) Regenerate the unit on site:
  1. Turn off the power on the unit
  2. Remove the front panel of the purifier by referring to previous section 8.1, follow steps 2 & 3
  3. Be sure to have at minimum, a grade 5N Argon or Helium at the inlet of the unit at a fixed flow rate of 200sccm. (the use of a purifier gas is preferred to minimize the water content below 10ppb at the inlet). Be sure to vent to the atmosphere the outlet of the purifier to avoid the contaminants going into the piping and gas analyzers.
  4. Use the included jumper to short the pins identified as J7 on the PCB below.
  5. Turn on the power. The unit’s internal getter will then warm up to 350 degrees Celsius.
  6. Be sure to leave 200sccm flow rate at 350Celsius for a period of a minimum of 8 hours.
  7. Turn off the power, remove the jumper, and re-install the front panel, and be sure to avoid air exposition before reconnecting the original CO2 gas source. Very important to wait for the unit to come back to ambient temperature before removing the 5N Argon or Helium regeneration gas to avoid air contamination.
