How an equalizer is used
A graphic equalizer is a high-fidelity audio control that allows you to
graphically view and individually control a number of different frequency
bands in a stereophonic system.
A typical gr~hic equalizer consists of several audio filters, each centered’at
a speidflc frequency in the audio range. The AVA-1204 and AVA-1404 equalizers
enable you to cut o:rc oost the
output level by up to l 2dB as desired at the following frequencies:
- 60Hz
- 150Hz
- 400Hz
- 1 kHz
- 3kHz
- 6kHz
- 15kHz
Turning on the power
The AVA-1204 and AVA-1404 have internal ON/OFF circuitry that responds to tu ming ON or OFF the head unit of your car audio system. This requires that your head unit have a remote turn-on lead available on the rear panel (which most head units have). With this convenient remote turn-on/off feature, you never have to worry about turning off the power to the equalizer when you shut off the audio system.
Setting system Power output levels
The AVA-1204 and AVA-1404 do not have Volume Level controls, Therefore, all of your audio system level controls are made at the head unit or, in the case of the subwoofer output, at the amplifier (or its remote control unit) dedicated to the subwoofer channel. In the case of the amplified model AVA-1404, the amplifier In the equalizer unit adds a very large power boost! So when you first turn on the system, be sure your head unit volume control is set at the minimum level. Then you can raise it slowly to see the effea the new equalizer has on the overall system volume level.
System applications
The AVA· l 204 and AVA· I 404 are intended for different applications. Please read the descriptions below (and the wiring diagrams that follow) to be sure you are using the product suited best to your car audio system.
AVA-1204 7-Band Equalizer with Subwoofer Output
The AVA-1204 is a signal processor/preamplifier. It is intended for use in a
car audio system which includes amplifiers in the signal path AFTER the
equalizer and provides Front, Rear and Subwoofer LOW LEVEL outputs via RCA
connectors.
- A stereo input signal is applied to the equalizer using EITHER (but not both) the low-level RCA inputs (from head unit Line Out) or from high-level inputs (head unit speaker level outputs).
- The user adjusts the various boost/cut levels at the desired frequencies.
- The resulting adjusted signal is then distributed from the Front, Rear and Subwoofer stereo RCA jacks on the rear of the unit to an amplifier for each of these channel pairs.
AVA-1404 7-Band Amplified Equalizer with Subwoofer Output
- The AVA· 1404 combines the functions of a graphic equalizer AND a powerful 4-channel amplifier.
- It is intended for use in car audio systems where the output signal from the head unit alone is not adequate to drive the speakers in a four-channel speaker system, AND there is no additional amplifier(s) present for the Front and Rear channels.
- A stereo input signal is applied to the equalizer using EITHER (but not both) the low level RCA inputs (from head unit Line Out) or from high level inputs (head unit speaker level outputs). The user adjusts the various boost/ cut levels at the desired frequencies.
- The AVA-1404 adds amplification of 200 watts (max power) to the equalizer speaker outputs for the Front and Rear channels. These must be connected to your speaker system as shown in the wiring diagram. PLEASE NOTE: You CANNOT connect the Front and Rear outputs of this equalizer to the inputs of any amplifier!
- The Subwoofer channel is not amplified, so if you wish to use the equalizer’s stereo subwoofer outputs (a low level outputs provided via a stereo RCA jack on the rear), you must connect an additional amplifier(s) in order to drive the subwoofer.
Installation
Mowdlng the equallaer
The AVA-1404 and AVA-1 404 are designed to be installed to the underside of yout vehicle dashboard or other similar surface using the scre~s and brackets are provided. Install the unit securely, according to the diagram below.

NOTE:
- The amplifier in the equalizer unit adds a very large power boost to the sound at your speakers!
- Therefore, when you first turn on the system, be sure your head unit volume control is set at the minimum level. A sudden, excessive burst of sound can damage your speaker system.
- Then you can raise it slowly to see the effect the added amplification has on the overall volume level.
