Thank you

Thank you for choosing a Cremona Violin Outfit! We wish you many years of trouble free service and playing enjoyment as you embark on the exciting, and rewarding journey of learning how to play the violin.

Setting the Soundpost:

Each Cremona violin is setup to play at our workshop prior to delivery. To protect the delicate tone woods used to create your instrument from the unlikelihood of any damage caused in transit, the Strings have been loosened and the bridge lowered; ready for final adjustments to meet individual player requirements.

It is also sometimes necessary to reposition a fallen soundpost back to its original position. Hear that rattle? Fortunately, once the post is perfectly repositioned, the Bridge is placed back on the instrument, and tuned to pitch, the sound post will once again be held perfectly in place.

Important Note: Rest assured that the need to reposition the sound post is not related to material quality or workmanship – but IS necessary for any violin to perform optimally. Keep this in mind during string changes, or whenever downward string tension is removed from the bridge.

Although we highly recommend taking our violin to your favorite local music retailer, or to a qualified violin luthier to walk you through the process for the first time, any violin teacher can easily remedy the situation in minutes prior the first lesson.

The good news is that this process teaches a valuable skill that will prove quite useful as your child progresses along their journey of learning how to play the violin. Therefore, there’s no time like the present to learn how to do it yourself! So, let’s begin…

Location:

Because each soundpost is shaped to fit every instrument specifically, the easiest solution is to simply reuse the (already) correctly sized post; repositioning to the same location as it was originally done at setup.

As you can see in Figure 1, the optimal position for the sound post is approximately 2.5mm behind the treble foot of the bridge, and at the approximate “midpoint” of the foot. Ideally, the post should, “just fit” without any extra force or pressure.

When placed in the “original,” or correct position, the sound post will be held, gently but firmly, between the inside of the top, and back – requiring only that the bridge and strings be reinstalled, and is tuned accurately to pitch. At this point, the soundpost will once again be help perfectly in place.

How To Reposition:

Using the carefully sharpened tip of a VP-30, or other suitable soundpost setting tool, carefully pierce the upper portion of the post (utilizing the previous mark made from when a tool was used at setup). Next, carefully and insert the post through the treble side F-hole, aiming for the perpendicular position just behind the treble foot as shown in Figure 1 and 2.

Note: Remember that the soundpost is already the proper length, with both ends shaped to follow the contours and arching of the top and back. The post “ends” should perfectly and completely touch both, the inside top and back surfaces for best fit.

Take your time and work carefully; making fine adjustments to assure that the post is repositioned in the optimal location; precisely fitting without any undue pressure that could damage the top or back. Confirm your work by visualizing the post through the endpin hole, or treble F-hole when the work is done.

Congratulations, you have now successfully reset the position of your soundpost and can now enjoy the fabulous tone and exceptional playability of your new Cremona violin. Enjoy
