What is a brake controller?

A brake controller is a device that controls the braking force on the trailer’s brakes. It achieves this by varying its output  based on how hard you apply the brakes in the vehicle, providing proportional braking. It also allows you to adjust braking sensitivity and apply manual override to activate the trailer brakes only.

To activate the brake controller:

  1. Push the brake pedal in the vehicle OR use the manual override.
  2. The Elecbrakes EB2 unit is activated by the brake light voltage, measuring the braking force and applying it to the trailer.
  3. The trailer will brake at a proportional rate determined by the brake controller.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Depending on the mass of your trailer, you may be legally required to use an active braking system. The EB2 can be used for both electric and electric-over-hydraulic braking systems. Refer to the ADR38/05 standard for more information.

ABOUT ELECTRIC BRAKE CONTROLLERS

  • A brake controller, as the name suggests, is a device that controls the braking force on the trailers brakes. It does this by varying its output based on how hard you apply the brakes in the vehicle. This is called proportional braking. The brake controller also allows the user to adjust braking sensitivity and apply manual override which applies trailer brakes only.

  1. Push the brake pedal in the vehicle or use the manual override.
  2. The Elecbrakes EB2 unit is activated by the brake light voltage. It measures the braking force and applies it to the trailer.
  3. The trailer will brake at the proportional rate provided by the brake controller.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE

Depending on the mass of your trailer you may be legally required to use an active braking system. The EB2 can be used for both electric and electric- over-hydraulic braking systems. Reference the ADR38/05 standard for more information.

  2. Use our Tap + Tow technology to download the app. Simply tap your phone to the Elecbrakes logo on your brake controller and download the app from the App Store or Play Store.
  3. Tap again on the Elecbrakes logo to pair your unit.

IMPORTANT

  • When using a mobile phone ensure that it is mounted securely in a cradle.

IF USING THE ELECBRAKES REMOTE :

  • To connect the Elecbrakes remote, you must first download the Elecbrakes app. Under ‘settings’ tap “Allow EB Remote”. For more information on how to use the remote, refer to our Remote User Manual.

TAP+TOW NOT WORKING?

  • If NFC is not enabled on your smart phone, then the Tap + Tow pairing will not work. Try looking in your phones settings to turn on NFC or alternatively search for the device on the app manually.

CHECK YOUR CONNECTION

  • The EB2 requires a constant power source in order to operate. Turning your vehicles headlights on will activate the tail light circuit providing power to the EB2. Please note the auto (italic) setting in some vehicles will not activate the tail light circuit
  1. Navigate to the home page on the Elecbrakes App.
  2. Put your foot on the brake pedal.
  3. Check that the red circle is now displayed on the app indicating your unit is working correctly.

SETTING THE FORWARD DIRECTION

IMPORTANT

  • If this is the first time the Elecbrakes EB2 unit is being used, you will need  to follow the steps below in order to calibrate the forward direction. During this calibration the Elecbrakes EB2 unit will brake at default settings.
  1. Drive forward until you reach 40km/h and apply the brakes firmly coming to a full stop.
  2. Now go to ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Device’. You should see a change from auto to an angle between 0° to 360°.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • If the angle does not appear in the app, repeat step 1 & 2 again prior to troubleshooting

ADJUSTING YOUR BRAKES

  • Once you have confirmed that the installation angle is set, you can adjust your brake response settings. The unit will be set at a default response that will need to be tailored to your towing setup. You can configure different programs, to suit your scenario.

  • Your EB2 unit comes with default brake settings. We recommend adjusting your brake response to your specific requirements. To adjust the minimum, forward and reverse response, tap ‘settings’ on the app.

MINIMUM RESPONSE

  • To set the minimum response : Drive slowly, approximately 20km/h,  and apply the brakes as lightly as you can. The optimal minimum setting is usually when you can just barely feel that the trailer is braking. Experiment with small changes until you are happy with the feel.

FORWARD RESPONSE

  • To set the forward response : Drive at 40-50km/h and brake firmly. The optimal forward setting is when the tow vehicle and trailer brake as one. Experiment with small changes until you are happy with the feel of the forward brake response.

REVERSE RESPONSE

  • To set the reverse response: Reverse slowly and apply the brakes. The optimal reverse setting is when the tow vehicle and trailer brake as one. Experiment with small changes until you are happy with the feel of the reverse brake response.

Setting Up Your Unit

Using Manual Override

  • The manual override function allows you to manually engage the brakes on your trailer, without activating the vehicles brakes. The application of manual override can be used to mitigate trailer sway.
  1. The ‘When Tapped’ value controls the manual override brake response. To set the value, select ‘When Tapped’ under Override in program screen.
  2. A good rule of thumb is to start with the ‘When Tapped’ value the same as your forward response. From there you can adjust according to your preferences.

HOW TO USE

Managing Programs

How to adjust your programs:

You can set up to 5 user defined programs. These programs are useful for several reasons:

  • Variation in the weight of the trailer
  • A change in environment
  • Individual user preferences
