IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT WARNING
- Misuse of vise can cause serious injury to eyes, hands, limbs, etc. To ensure safety, vise must be set up and used properly.
- If there is any question about a condition being safe or unsafe, do not operate the vise. To avoid the risk of personal injury, equipment damage, fire & shock, make sure the work area has the following conditions:
- The floor is dry. Damp, wet, or rainy conditions can cause the operator to slip.
- The operator must be of sufficient age to operate the vice in a safe condition.
- Well Lit. Clean and unobstructed.
- The workbench is properly secured to the floor or wall.
- The workbench is designed sufficiently to handle vice and workload (torque placed upon the vise and workbench
- Before setting up and using, read, understand, and follow all instructions as outlined below.
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS
- ALWAYS use appropriate nuts, bolts, and lock washers in all mounting holes.
- ALWAYS use a vise of the proper size and capacity to hold work objects.
- ALWAYS wear eye, face, and ear protection when striking or using power tools.
- ALWAYS wear a dust mask or respirator when working with wood, metal, chemical dust, or mists.
- ALWAYS wear restrictive hair covering and anti-slip footwear while operating the vise.
- ALWAYS hand tightens handles of lockdowns for swivel base.
- ALWAYS inspect the vise for stress fatigue or damage before use.
- ALWAYS Regularly maintain the vise by greasing the main screw.
- NEVER use a hammer, extension pipe, or cheater bar on the vise’s spindle handle.
- NEVER wear loose clothing or jewelry while operating vise
- NEVER Welding the vise’s base to any metal object.
- NEVER use a vise to press an object into or out of another object.
- NEVER use an extension pipe to tighten the handles of lockdowns.
- NEVER place pressurized containers or combustible materials in a vise.
- NEVER unscrew the movable jaw beyond the vise’s maximum specified opening.
- NEVER apply extreme heat or prolonged heat to the vise as it may alter structural properties.
MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
- Mount the vise to the work surface in the desired location by securing all mounting flanges located on the base.
- For added strength to the workbench before installing and securing the vise, place an 18” x 18” x 2” piece of wood (18” x 18” x ¼” metal plate) to the underneath side.
- Mark and drill holes through the workbench and wood/metal plate using the swivel base as the template for the mounting holes. Before drilling, make sure the area is free & clear of any hazards.
Use Four 7/16″ diameter bolts, 2 inches longer than the bench top thickness, flat washers, and nuts.
MOUNTING DIMENSIONS
NOT TO SCALE
Forward suggests the following optimal configuration: Firstly, insert the appropriate length and diameter bolts, accompanied by a flat washer, into the vise’s swivel base. The bolt should extend at least 2″ beyond the underside of both the workbench and the wood/metal plate. Then, on the underside of these, attach a flat washer, lock washer, and locking nut to the bolt. Finally, ensure the vise is firmly fastened to the workbench. Remember to periodically recheck and tighten the nuts for maximum security.
VISE OPERATION
Make sure the vise selection (size and type) is appropriate for use and application. Larger vises are readily available through Forward Vises.
- Step 1: Open the vise by turning the vise handle counterclockwise. Do not open beyond the vises rated capacity (jaw opening).
- Step 2: Place the workpiece between the serrated jaws of the vise.
- Step 3: Close vise by turning the handle clockwise until the item is snug between the serrated jaws.
- Step 4: Continue to tighten the screw handle until you can no longer move (twist) the clamped item. Do not over-tighten as this may damage the item and/or the vise.
- Step 5: When finished working on the item, slowly turn the screw handle counterclockwise to release the item.
SWIVEL BASE OPERATION
The vise, typically positioned perpendicularly to the workbench, allows work
from either side. However, for better and safer access to the item, it may
need repositioning. Follow these steps to adjust the vise’s position:
- Step 1: Secure the item in vise and gently loosen each lockdown on vise’s sides. Avoid over-loosening or entirely removing the lockdowns to prevent vise from tipping over, which could cause serious injury. Turn each lockdown about a quarter turn counterclockwise until vise can pivot at base.
- Step 2: Pivot the vise to improve and secure access to the item.
- Step 3: Firmly clamp the vise to the base by tightening each lockdown in a clockwise direction.
