Ride Manual
WELCOME
Welcome and thank you for entering the Dartmoor Classic Sportive 2023 which is
scheduled to take place on Saturday 1st to Sunday 2nd July.
Please take your time to read through this document before you travel to
ensure you fully understand the format of the event and the terms and
conditions under which you agree to participate.
There is always an element of risk when participating n cycling events.
This document provides the necessary information to minimise those risks and
ensure you get the most out of your time with us.

PREPERATION
The Dartmoor Classic is an endurance-based cycling challenge. You should have
been training to ensure you have the appropriate Level of fitness to complete
your chosen route. At this stage you should be confident you can complete the
distance in the time available.
Check your bike is roadworthy and in good mechanical condition. We recommend
you have t serviced by a reputable Bicycle Mechanic.
Tri Bars & Aero Bars are NOT permitted – They are not suitable or safe for
group riding. Please remove them before attending or use a different bike.
Whilst the routes are signed and marshalled, we advise that you familiarise
yourself with the course and download your chosen route to your bike computer
or mobile phone. The routes are available on our website. If you are using
your mobile phone, we recommend the RideWithGPS App. This s free to down load
and allows you to easily save the route from our website.
- In the 48 hours prior to the event, you should prepare so that you arrive refreshed and relaxed.
- Eat high carbohydrate meals (Pasta, Rice, Potatoes etc.)
- Drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol to ensure good hydration Levels.
- Pack your kit and plan your travel
- Check the Princetown weather forecast when deciding what clothing to wear Cycle helmets are compulsory – No Helmet= No Ride!
- Don’t forget your cycling shoes!
- Bring Lights in case of mist or poor visibility on Dartmoor.
- Cycle Repair Kit (2 x inner tubes, 2 x tyre Lever, Cycle Pump or Co2 lnflator, Multi-Tool)
- Remember to bring two Large water bottles – staying hydrated is mportant!
- Drink & Energy Snacks to sustain you from the start to the first Feed Station.
- Allow plenty of time for travel – Do not end up stressed with a Last-minute rush
- Plan to have a good breakfast at least 1 hour before you start your ride.

you’re not part of it already, maybe you should be. British Cycling will I’m
sure, be happy to offer membership advice but they are mostly here to support
the many Breeze, female cyclists they have kindly sponsored to ride the
Dartmoor Classic for the first time. This is all part of their push to
encourage female cyclists and help promote cycling as an everyday mode of
transport for everyone. Great news for all and the planet.
There will be a play area and bouncy castle for the children. And, if they’re
good an ice cream from the van and a coffee for yourselves from 1 of our
coffee stands, along with a licensed bar and your chance to sample the
Dartmoor Classic Gin at the Papillon stand or quench your thirst with a Jail
Ale as a reminder of your cycle through the Dartmoor Brewery at Princetown.
Papillon Dartmoor Distillery based in Moretonhampstead, have distilled a
special edition gin for the Dartmoor Classic. A classic style juniper-led gin
with a cycling twist of dates, cacao, oat, almonds and orange. £5 from every
bottle helps support regional cycling, Dartmoor National Park and local good

picked up from the Papillon Gin stand at the event village. Bottles will not

And in addition, for the Sunday there will be a Sports Massage Clinic on site
providing well-earned post-ride massage. The Clinics skilled team will be
ready to provide skilled sports massage, kinesiology taping, and tailored
injury advice, to help with any aches and pains but above all to support your
recovery.
BIG Prize Draw
Our close friends, Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team (Ashburton) will be running
the BIG Dartmoor Classic Prize Draw to raise fund for their amazing work
saving lives on Dartmoor.

Dartmoor Classic Castelli 2023 Jersey
If you ordered a Dartmoor Classic Cycle Jersey you will be able to collect it
from the Event HQ marquee at any time during the day, before or after your
ride.
There is a very small number of surplus jerseys that will be sold on a first-
come, first-served basis.
These will only be available on Sunday post-ride in the Recovery Zone.
REGISTRATION

Last minute registration Sunday 2nc July – 05:30 ars te 07:30 hrs
Ride Packs are NOT posted out for this 2023 event.
Participants must attend the weg stration Hallin person to sign-on and collect
their pack.
Main registration is on the Saturday afternoon. [his really Helos us and gives
you a much more relaxed start, rather than rushing around early on the Sunday
morning.
- You must sign-on in person.
- Third party sign-on is NOT permitted – No exceptions!
- Make sure you have Photo ID with vou as proof of identity.
- Please report to the correct desk for your route GRANDE, MEDIO, or PICCOLO.
- Sign the official start sheet, next to your name.
- By signing you agree to abide by the regulations and acknowledge that you participate at your own risk
You will then be given your personal fide Pack’ containing:
- Bike Number (Tix to handlebars of bike with cable ties provided)
- 2x Caple Tes
- Jersey Number (fix to rear of cycle Jersey using pins provided)
- 4 x Safety Pins
- Disposable Timing Chip (Stick to Outside Left of Helmet).
Your Rider Number
Your Rider Number is key to your Identity in the event of an emergency. Please
make sure both Jersey and Handle bar numbers are clearly displayed at all
times.
Your Rider Number is also your proof of entry and is required for access to
the Feed Stations, closed road hill climb, and event photos.
Fix your Jersey Number to the rear of your cycle jersey using pins provided.
Bike Number needs to be fixed to handlebars of your bike with the two cable
ties provided.
Disposable Timing Chip
You will receive a small, disposable timing chip in your Ride Pack. The chip
must be attached to the OUT- SIDE LEFT of your helmet. Do NOT attach your chip
on top of an older chip, on any metallic or shiny logo, or on Scotch-Lite
reflective material – these will impede the RFID chip timing signal.
The chips have a special glue that will not cause any damage to your helmet.
They can easily be peeled off and thrown away after you finish. Correct
placement of the chip is essential to determine your official finish time.
Your Electronic Chip will automatically record the time that you pass through
each of the Control Points on the course.
EVENT PARKING
Saturday
There is ample FREE parking at Newton Abbot Racecourse.
Please follow the instructions of the Parking Marshals who will get you into
the venue and parked up as quickly as possible.
Sunday
Whilst there is ample parking for everyone at Newton Abbot Racecourse, long
delays accessing and departing the site are unavoidable.
There are a number of alternative car parks available close to the racecourse
and these are FREE on Sundays (see map on following page).
Participants arriving by bike will be directed straight into the ‘start lane’
Dropping Riders Off
It is IMPORTANT to note that between 05:30 hrs and 09:30 hrs we will only
permit vehicles to enter the racecourse. If you are being dropped off, please
make sure this is done away from the racecourse entrances. Once a vehicle
enters the racecourse they will not be able to leave until all riders have
departed (09:30 hrs).
PARKING
THE START
Riders are not allocated individual start-times. Each route has a start- window.
- GRANDE riders are required to start between 06:30 hrs and 08:00 hrs
- MEDIO riders are required to start between 07:30 hrs and 08:30 hrs
- PICCOLO riders are required to start between 08:00 hrs and 09:00 hrs.
When you are ready and prepared for your ride, make your way to the Start-
Lane. If riding with friends or family, pre-arrange a meet point and then
present yourselves together at the start-lane.
Please do not enter the start-lane early. We need to enable those on the
longer routes to make an earlier start so there is sufficient time for them to
complete the course.
As you reach the front of the start-lane you will be assigned to a start-group
of riders witha Lead-Vehicle.
The first part of your ride is neutralised and is NOT included in your medal
time. You must remain behind your Ride Ambassador or Lead Vehicle. They will
guide you out of the built-up area to the Timing Tower.
Once you have cycled passed the Timing Tower you will be able to continue at
your own pace.
- ALL riders MUST start before 09:00 hrs (unless delayed by the organisers for safety reasons)
- Each group will receive a rider safety briefing.
- You will depart under escort.
- You MUST remain behind the lead vehicle until you reach the Timing Tower.
- Your official medal time will not start unless you pass the timing point at this location.
- Once you have passed the Timing Point the clock continues ticking until you return.
- The Start / Finish timing location will be clearly marked by the same Tower.
ON THE ROAD
- THIS EVENT IS NOTA RACE. You MUST comply with the Law & Highway Code at all times.
- This is NOT a fully closed road event — cycle responsibly — share the road.
- DO NOT get drawn into any arguments please refer any complaints to the organisers.
- Cycle helmets (compliant with EN1078) are compulsory in this event. No Helmet = No Ride!
- There are traffic lights on the course. DO NOT contravene them.
- Take care around horses. Talk (not shout) to gain the riders attention and not startle the horse.
- BEWARE OF POTHOLES – There are a lot on the course this year – Watch for signs and take care
- If riding in a group never ride more than 2 abreast. Single out on narrow or busy roads.
- Moorland animals frequently wander into the road, take extra care on unfenced roads.
- The route is signed and marshalled but the onus of remaining on-course rests with you, the rider.
- Make sure you pace yourself So you can complete your ride.
- If you encounter someone in trouble, offer help and/or tell a marshal.
- Ensure you carry enough food and drink to refuel in-between the feed stations.
- Please DO NOT drop litter – Take it home or leave it with a marshal.
- Donot use a mobile phone while riding. Stop in a safe place if you need to make or receive a call.
- You MUST NOT wear earphones whilst cycling in this event.
- Oncattle grids, keep your bike upright, in a straight line, and do not brake whilst on them!
Any anti-social behaviour reported to the organisers, (such as: dropping litter, urinating in public, failing to obey traffic laws, or careless cycling), will result in the offender being withdrawn from the event anda ban on participating in any future Mid-Devon CC events.
EVENT TIMING
Your Electronic Timing Chip (page 9) will automatically register the time that
you pass through each of the Control Points on the course. These will be set
up at the following locations:
Grande Timing
- Timing Tower on Clay Pits Way – Kingsteignton (Official medal time starts here)
- Hill Climb Section
- Lydford
- Clay Pits Way – Kingsteignton (Official medal time ends here)
Riders who do not register at the Lydford Control Point will default to the Medio Route.
- Timing Tower on Clay Pits Way – Kingsteignton (Official medal time starts here)
- Hill Climb Section
- Clay Pits Way – Kingsteignton (Official medal time ends here)
Medio Timing
Riders who do not register at the Hill Climb Control Point will default to the
Piccolo Route.

Piccolo Timing
Timing is automatic and does not stop at feedstations
The first 2 miles from Newton Abbot Racecourse to the Clay Pits Way Control
Point is neutralised. You will be escorted in your start group and you must
not overtake the lead vehicle. Use this time to warm up your legs.
Your official ride time is taken from the moment you pass the Clay Pits Way
Timing Tower until you return through the same point at the end of your ride.
The clock does NOT stop at the Feed Stations.
Your official time will differ from your Garmin Computer unless you have
switched off all the ‘auto-pause’ functions.
The route from Clay Pits Way Timing Tower back to Newton Abbot Racecourse in
NOT timed. Use this final 2.4 mile section to gradually warm down your legs,
knowing your medal time has been secured.
Grande cut-off time
At 11:00 hrs the Grande Route option will be closed. Any rider failing to
reach Rundlestone by 11:00 hrs will be diverted onto the Medio route.
This is necessary to ensure the event can be closed on time.
Route Switching
If you would like to switch to a different route from the one you have
entered, please advise the registration staff when you collect your Ride Pack.
IF YOU ARE OUT ON THE COURSE and want to swap route, the automatic timing will
pick-up that you have not gone through a timing point and adjust your route
selection.
Event Timing will close at 17:30 hrs prompt – if you finish after this time
you will not have an official finish time recorded. Riders should aim to
finish before 17:00 hrs.
CLOSED ROAD HILL CLIMB
Medio & Grande routes only – This is just after the Piccolo Route Split Point.
This is the only closed road section of the Dartmoor Classic.
Kindly supported by EKOI this years Hill Climb section has some amazing prizes
for those riders blessed with the ability of getting up those Dartmoor hills
in the quickest time.
There will be KoM and QoM prizes for the fastest male and female of each age
catagory on this climb.
These include, EKOI Helmets, EKOI Cycling Glasses and EKOI Caps!
The Closed Road Section is on Beckaford Hill. The exact start and finish will
be flagged on the day.And for the overall KOM and QOM there’s a
bottle the Dartmoor Classic Gin kindly donated by Papillon Gin.
FEED STATIONS
There will be a selection of sweet and savoury foods in addition to Energy
Gels and Drink. There will also be fresh drinking water available.
Grande Feedstations
Princetown (Food & Drink) – 34 miles
Lydford (Drink Only) – 63 miles
Princetown (Food & Drink) – 73 miles
Medio Feedstation
Princetown (Food & Drink) – 34 miles
Piccolo Feedstation
Moretonhampstead (Food & Drink) – 19 miles
Our nutrition partner this year is HighS who will be supplying their drink
tablets & energy bars. Please only take the provisions you require to complete
your ride. Please don’t take more than your fair share.
Sweet and savory food is supplied by Country Kitchen of Torquay.
Food Allergies & Special Diets
There will be vegetarian and gluten free options available. However, we are
unable to guarantee we will have suitable nutrition for those with food
allergies or those on specific diets. If you have concerns, please bring along
your own food to the Event HQ and we will arrange to have this transported to
the Feed Station for you. TOILETS
There are plenty of toilets provided at the Racecourse and at the Feed
Stations.
Please refrain from answering calls of nature close to the public highway or
anywhere it would offend others.
There are also a number of public toilets, on or very close to the routes
(Kingsteignton, Bovey Tracey, Haytor, Venford, Princetown, Horrabridge,
Tavistock, Lydford, Brentor, Postbridge and Moretonhampstead.
EVENT SUPPORT
Please store these numbers in your mobile phone so that you have them with you
should you require assistance:

Please use these numbers to call the Event Support or Medical Team who will
then deploy the necessary resources to assist you. You can also ask for
assistance from any of the route marshals, motorcycle out-riders or mobile
support vehicles.
Emergency Location
To get resources to you quickly, we will need to know your location. Many of
the junctions will have specific names recorded on the Sign Post.
If you have a Bike Computer, this will show you how far you have cycled. If we
know your route, and distance cycled we can calculate your location.
If you have a smartphone, the Map App will show you your location. You can
also download the ‘What 3 Words’ App which will give you your precise location
in a word format that is recognized by the emergency services.
Medical Emergency
If it is clear that a person requires hospital treatment, please call 999
FIRST, once you have an ambulance on-route, then contact the event support
team.
We have paramedics and ambulances strategically placed around the course. We
will get the closest resource to you as quickly as we are able.
Mechanical Support
If you find you are unable to affect your own repair, contact the event
support number and we will get one of the event mechanics to you as soon as we
can.
Recovery Bus
A Recovery Service will operate from Princetown to take retiring riders and
their bikes back to the Event Village. This service will be available between
11:00 hrs and 17:00 hrs.
FINISH PROCEDURE
- When you pass the Timing Control Tower on Clay Pits Way your official medal time will stop. You will receive a text message with your official time and medal standard.
- Follow the official route back to Newton Abbot Racecourse. Use this last 2.4 miles to gradually warm down your legs.
- Immediately after you have finished, place your bike in the Bike Racks or return it to your vehicle.
- You will not be permitted to take your bike into the main public area of the Event Village.
- Go to the check-in marquee (you will need to know your rider number)
- Show the Check-In Staff your Results Text Message or provide your Rider Number
- The Check-In Staff will award you your Medal and Reward Tokens
- Use your Reward Tokens at the Event Village to receive your Goody Bag & T-Shirt unless you opted for the planting of a tree
Results will be available live online – including a free downloadable
certificate.
Relax and enjoy time at the Event Village – fun for all the family!
If you are unable to complete the ride for any reason, please advise an event
official, so that we know you have returned safely from the course. You will
still be able to collect your t-shirt & goody bag.
*Thanks to those riders who opted for tree planting nearly 400 trees will be planted.
MEDAL STANDARDS
The Piccolo route is intended to be a relaxed and non-competitive
rice. It is designed to encourage more people to take up cycling as a healthy
lifestyle. There are no age category standards associated with this ride,
everyone will receive a finishers medal. Your official ride time is still
recorded and will be published in the live -online results. You will also be
able to download your personalised finishers certificate from the results
website.
