Phono Tube Preamplifier

Dear music lover,
thank you for purchasing our CANOR Asterion V2 Phono Tube Preamplifier.
To preserve and maintain the best characteristics of your preamplifier, we recommend you carefully read the following lines.

Safety instructions

Please read before putting the device into operation:

  • Read the instructions – all safety information and instructions should be read before using the amplifier.

  • Keep the user manual – the safety and user instructions manual should be stored for later use.

  • Follow the instructions – all safety and user instructions should be followed.

  • Water and moisture – Asterion V2 preamplifier should not be placed near water, for example near bathtubs, swimming pools, kitchen sink, etc..

  • Accessories – do not use accessories not recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Placement – do not place a device on an unstable pad. The device may fall, which can cause serious injuries to children or adults and damage to the device. Use only pads or racks recommended by the manufacturer or pads sold to dealers with this device. Any placement of the device should be in  accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and only accessories recommended by the manufacturer should be used.

  • Ventilation – the unit should be placed the way to ensure proper airflow. That means placing the amplifier on a sofa or upholstered furniture is not allowed. The amplifier may not be covered over when in operation, it would otherwise prevent proper airflow around the vent holes of the amplifier.

  • Heat – amplifier must be placed to avoid the heating effect from heat sources, for example, radiators or stoves, or other heat-producing equipment. The distance from the back wall of the unit may not be less than 20 cm, and 20 cm above the Asterion V2 may not be any barrier. Alongside the unit should be ensured 20 cm minimum distance from other objects.

  • Power source – the device must be connected only to mains (voltage) for what it was designed for.

  • Power cord – it is necessary to pay particular attention to a power cord. It must be positioned in order to avoid stepping on it and ensure it is protected against mechanical damage.

  • If you do not use the Asterion V2 preamplifier for a longer period you should disconnect the power cord from the mains supply, or at least turn off the main power switch on the back panel.

  • Objects containing liquid – do not place these objects (vases, flowerpots) in a way there is a risk they can fall down or overflow and so cause damage to the amplifier.

  • Damages requiring service – equipment should be repaired by qualified service in the event that:
    a) power cord is damaged.
    b) device dropped into the water or was poured.
    c) device was exposed to rain.
    d) device works incorrectly.
    e) the device fell down on the ground or is otherwise mechanically damaged.

  • Repairs – all repairs must be entrusted to a qualified service.

  • General warning – use the device only in accordance with this user guide.

The manufacturer declines any liability should these safety measures not be observed. To help you avoid an electric shock, do not expose the amplifier to rain or moisture!

CANOR Asterion V2 is a fully valved phono preamplifier for both MM and MC phono cartridges that contain as many as nine vacuum tubes (including one vacuum diode) and is equipped with a high-quality MC step-up Lundahl transformer.
The Asterion V2 is designed with regard to the highest possible audio quality. The overall electrical and mechanical construction is tailored to achieve this ultimate goal.

  • wiring circuitry without any global feedback
  • PCBs utilize our premium CMT ™ technology.
  • absolute selection and tubes matching with above average parameters.
  • vacuum-impregnated transformer core
  • transformer potted in a special anti-vibration compound.
  • only high-quality polypropylene capacitors in the signal path
  • high variability of gain settings, resistances, and capacitances settings for all types of phono cartridges
  • symmetric (balanced) XLR output available.
  • symmetric (balanced) XLR input available for MC cartridges.

If a turntable is fitted with two tonearms, one having an MM phono cartridge installed and the other MC, both can be connected simultaneously without mutually affecting each other.

Basics
Plug the power cord in Asterion V2. Turn on the Asterion V2 with the Power Main switch, which is located on the back panel. When you turn on the main switch, the Asterion V2 will set into standby mode – the red LED diode on the front panel lights up. After pressing the Power button controlled turning-on sequence gets initiated, which consists of cooling and preheating the tubes, thereby extending their life span. The cooling cycle is also being carried out when the unit is turned off, if the main switch on the back panel is not turned off, i.e. after turning off via a button on the front panel, and a 45-second countdown to cooling without indication begins. If you turn on the unit at this time, the cooling will continue and will be indicated by a flashing red LED. When the cooling cycle is over, the main toroidal transformer gets connected (the CANOR logo lights up), and then the slow start-up of voltage begins. This cycle lasts 20 – 30 seconds.

European Community Directives
This product is designed and manufactured in order to comply with existing laws of the European Community.
This product is certified by a testing laboratory and bears the CE mark.

FRONT PANEL

  • MAIN ROTARY KNOB – adjusting loads and resistance for dedicated input.
  • POWER – turning on and off the amplifier.
  • MUTE – pressing this button results in an instant muting of the volume. Subsequent pressing results in default volume.
  • DIMM – sets the display brightness in six steps whereby 0 is a turned-off display, and 5 is maximum brightness. After turning the unit on, the display brightness level is 3 and by repeatedly pressing or holding the button, brightness lowers to values 2, 1, 0 and continues to rise until maximum brightness (5) is reached, and repeatedly lowers until the display is turned off. In the state of a turned-off display during operating the device with function keys the display lights up to brightness 2, and after a few seconds, the display turns off again.
  • MC1 – to use with Moving Coil cartridges. Gain: 70dB. Available MC1 resistance: 10R, 20R, 40R, 80R, 150R, 300R, 600R, 1200R.
