Materials:

  • Wooden frame
  • Bag of mosaic stones
  • Plastic spreader
  • Sponge
  • White plaster powder
  • Glue

Step 1: Prepare the frame.

First, remove the backing, mat and plastic front from the frame before you start adding the mosaic stones. This will make it easier to work with and keep your picture safe from any mess or damage.

Fold up the retaining metal tabs on the back of the frame with a spoon, and remove the backing, mat, and plastic front and set aside for now.

Step 2: Add the glue and stones on top.

Use the spreader stick to apply a thin layer of glue to a small area of the frame.

Work in small areas, no more than 1.5” (4cm) square at a time. This ensures the spread glue doesn’t dry before you apply the mosaic pieces.

Gently apply mosaic pieces to the area covered with glue. Randomly place the stones onto the frame, leaving a bit of space between each stone (about 3-4mm or 1/8”).

(When applying the mosaics, don’t go right to the edge of the spread glue. This will make it harder to apply glue to the next work area)

Repeat this process until you have decorated the entire frame.

TIP: If your glue dries, simply add another thin layer and continue.

Step 3: Let it sit.

Allow the glue and stones to dry for at least an hour before moving on to the next step. Clean the glue spreader with a paper towel and save it for the next step.

Step 4: Prepare the plaster and apply to the frame.

Working in a well-ventilated area, use the plastic glue spreader and mix the entire bag (70 grams) of plaster powder with 15 ml (about 0.51 oz) of water until it’s nice and smooth. You want it to be smooth but not runny. If the mixture is too watery, wait until it stiffens a little before applying to the frame.

It’s best to use a clean disposable plastic container or a clean used glass jar to mix your plaster in. You can discard this when you’re done.

Add the plaster powder to your disposable container. Cut the bag open with scissors and pour into the container. Be careful to NOT breathe in the powder.

Slowly add in the water, one teaspoon at a time and mix thoroughly. Don’t add more than one teaspoon at a time. This helps you control the consistency of the mixture more easily.

You’ll have about 5 minutes maximum to mix the plaster to the right consistency, as it begins to set once it mixes with water.

Use the plastic spreader to apply a thin layer of plaster over the mosaic stones, starting from the middle and spreading towards the edges until all spaces are covered. Start with a thin layer and apply more as needed. You can use the included sponge (slightly damp) to help spread the plaster and smooth it out between the mosaic pieces.

Step 5: Clean off the excess.

Wait at least 5 minutes for the plaster to start setting, then use the sponge to gently wipe off the excess plaster from the mosaic stones and sides as it sets. Dampen the sponge with a bit of water and wipe off excess until you get the desired effect.

Tip: The stones don’t need to be perfectly shiny at this point – just with no significant amount of plaster on them.

Step 6: Let it dry.

Wait an hour or until the plaster grout is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 7: Clean the stones.

Once the plaster is dry, use a dry sponge or a cloth/paper towel to clean the tops of the stones. Shine them to give them a polished look.

Step 8: Place your photo in the frame.

Finally, you’re ready to place your photo in your frame.

Peel off the protective film from the plastic front.

Then you can either use the mat and include a 4×6 photo or take it out and use a 5×7 picture.

Assemble the backing piece on, and fold back the retaining tabs.

And that’s it! Your one-of-a-kind Mosaic Photo Frame is ready to showcase your favorite memories! Display it proudly or give it as a thoughtful gift.

CHANGING THE PHOTO

To change the photo inside the photo frame, flip the frame over. On the back side there are small metal tabs holding the backing panel in place.

These tabs can be folded up with the edge of a spoon or pried off with pliers to release the backing panel.

Pull out the backing panel, and then layer the mat (if needed for a 4×6” photo), the photo and the backing panel.
