Installation Suggestions

  • Do not wear loose clothing that may become entangled in the impeller or other moving parts.
  • Only qualified personnel should install, operate, and repair the pump.
  • Keep clear of suction and discharge openings. DO NOT insert fingers in the pump with power connected.
  • Do not pump hazardous materials (flammable, caustic, etc.).
  • Do not block or restrict the discharge hose, as the discharge hose may whip under pressure.
  • Make sure lifting handles are securely fastened each time before lifting.
  • Do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommendation for maximum performance, as this could cause the motor to overheat.
  • Secure the pump in its operating position so it can not tip over, fall, or slide.
  • Submersible Pumps are not approved for use in swimming pools.
  • Do not operate the pump without safety devices in place. Always replace safety devices that have been removed during service or repair.
  • Any wiring of pumps should be performed by a qualified electrician.
  • Cable should be protected at all times to avoid punctures, cuts, bruises, and abrasions–inspect frequently.
  • Never handle connected power cords with wet hands.
  • Do not remove the cord and strain relief. Do not connect the conduit to the pump.
  • To reduce the risk of electrical shock, all wiring and junction connections should be made per the NEC or CEC and applicable state or province and local codes. Requirements may vary depending on usage and location.
  • Use only in a fully assembled state.

IMPORTANT! Aquascape, Inc. is not responsible for losses, injury, or death resulting from a failure to observe these safety precautions, misuse or abuse of pumps or equipment.
General Information

IMPORTANT! Read all instructions in this manual before operating pump.

Receiving
Upon receiving the pump, it should be inspected for damage or shortages. If damage has occurred, file a claim immediately with the company that delivered the pump. If the manual is removed from the packaging, do not lose or misplace.

Installation

Location:
These pumping units are self-contained and are recommended for use in an Aquascape skimmer or snorkel, sump, lift station or basin. This pump is designed to pump pond water and shall NOT be installed in locations classified as hazardous per the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70 or the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC). Never install the pump in a trench, ditch, or hole with a dirt bottom; the legs will sink into the dirt and the suction will become plugged.

Check Valve:
With the skimmer properly installed in the ground, feed the flex PVC discharge pipe leading to the BioFalls® through a hole in the back of the skimmer (see Fig.1 on page 5). Slide the collar piece over PVC FIRST, then glue pipe end cap to PVC tubing (see fig. 2 on page 5). The fitting on the bottom of the Aquascape check valve assembly should be threaded into the pump discharge. Standing behind the Skimmer set the pump along the right side, inside the skimmer vault (see Fig. 3 on page 6). Connect the check valve assembly by sliding the collar up to the check valve and tightening (see Fig. 4 on page 6).
See installation instructions for other aspects of pump and pond maintenance.

Submergence
It is recommended that the pump be operated in the submerged condition. The pump is equipped with a thermal protector which will shut down the pump temporarily in low water conditions. However, this is not recommended for extended periods.

Discharge
An Aquascape check valve is recommended for each pump being used. The Aquascape check valve is used to prevent backflow into the sump. Excessive backflow can cause flooding and/or damage to the pump.

CAUTION: If the pump is operated while the electrical cable is drooping, it may become caught in the impeller, causing the cable to be cut, damaging the impeller or causing seep-age in the pump, which can result in electrical leakage or shock.

Troubleshooting

CAUTION! Always disconnect the pump form the electrical power source before handling.
If the system fails to operate properly, carefully read instructions and perform maintenance recommendations. If operating problems persist, the following chart may be of assistance in identifying and correcting them.
MATCH “CAUSE” NUMBER WITH CORRELATING “CORRECTION” NUMBER.

NOTE: Not all problems and corrections will apply to each pump model.

Problem

  • Pump will not run.
  • Pump hums but doesn’t run.
  • Pump delivers insufficient capacity.

Cause (Correction) see step 6

  • Poor electrical connection, blown fuse, tripped breaker or other interruption of power; improper power supply. (1)
  • Insufficient water level. (2)
  • Incorrect voltage (1)
  • Impeller jammed or loose on the shaft, worn or damaged, impeller cavity or inlet plugged. (7)
  • Incorrect voltage (1)
  • Excessive inflow or pump not properly sized for application. (3)
  • Discharge restricted. (4)
  • Check valve stuck closed or installed backward. (5)
  • The Shut-off valve is closed. (6)
  • Impeller jammed or loose on the shaft, worn or damaged, impeller cavity or inlet plugged. (7)
  • Air may be trapped in the pump impeller chamber (8)

Problem

  • The pump cycles too frequently or runs periodically when fixtures are not in use.
  • The pump Shuts off and turns on independently of the switch.
  • (trips thermal overload protector).
  • CAUTION! The pump may start unexpectedly. Disconnect the power supply.
  • The pump operates noisily or vibrates excessively.

Cause (Correction) see step 6 below

  • Check valve stuck closed or installed backward. (5)
  • Insufficient water level. (2)
  • Incorrect voltage (1)
  • Excessive inflow or pump not properly sized for application. (3)
  • Impeller jammed or loose on the shaft, worn or damaged, impeller cavity or inlet plugged. (7)
  • Excessive water temperature (internal protection only). (11)
  • Debris in impeller cavity or broken impeller. (7)
  • Fittings on the pump or check valve not secured properly (14)

Corrections

  1. Check all electrical connections for security. Have the electrician measure the current in motor leads, if the current is within ±20% of locked rotor Amps, the impeller is probably locked. If the current is 0, overload may be tripped. Remove power, allow the pump to cool, then recheck current.
  2. Make sure the water level is at or close to the proper height on the skimmer face plate. (see below)
  3. Recheck all sizing calculations to determine the proper pump size.
  4. Check the discharge line for restrictions, including ice if the line passes through or into cold areas.
  5. Remove and examine the check valve for proper installation and freedom of operation.
  6. Open valve.
  7. Check the impeller for freedom of operation, security, and condition. Clean the impeller cavity and inlet of any obstruction.
  8. Remove the pump or tilt the pump to allow trapped air to escape from the impeller chamber.
  9. Check rotation. If the power supply is three-phase, reverse any two of the three power supply leads to ensure proper impeller rotation.
  10. Repair fixtures as required to eliminate leakage.
  11. Check pump temperature limits & fluid temperature.
  12. Replace a portion of the discharge pipe with a flexible connector.
  13. Check for leaks around the basin inlet and outlets.
  14. Check fittings and tighten if needed

Proper Water Level with respect to skimmer face: Water level should be about 3/4” to 1 1/2” below the top of the skimmer face opening

Care After Pump Operation

You don’t specifically have to care for this Aquascape pump, however, you are requested to observe the following points after using the pump:

  • If freezing temperatures are predicted and the pump is not in operation, remove the pump from the water, wash it with clean water, and remove any debris or water in the impel– ler chamber. Store pump in a bucket of water in a non-freezing location. This will help prevent the seals from drying out on the pump.
  • Our pumps are all 300 series s.s. or plastic components. No rust should be present.
