10191008 Series Cable Intelligence
A low-voltage cable installed outdoors must have the ability to maintain proper, worry-free operation in extreme conditions. But it’s not quite as simple as finding the cable marked “outdoors.” Several ratings, listings, and features are available, and each offers distinct benefits. Let’s explore some of the common outdoor cable terms that you may find printed on a cable’s jacket or in the spec.
Sunlight Resistant
Cable Marking: SUNLIGHT RESISTANT, SUN RES or SR
Sunlight Resistant cable – also informally known as UV Rated cable – may be
installed in locations exposed to sunlight. A Sunlight Resistant listing means
that a cable has been evaluated for long-term exposure to damaging UV light.
The testing process lasts 30 days, during which the cable is blasted with
repeated cycles of UV light and light water misting. At the conclusion of the
test period, the cable jacket is inspected for tensile strength and elongation
to verify that its integrity has not been excessively degraded.
CMX-Outdoor
Cable Marking: CMX-Outdoor
When “Outdoor” is added to a type CMX cable, it means that the cable is
suitable for installations outdoor on a dwelling. To achieve this listing, a
cable must pass a weatherometer test and a cold impact test. The weather-
ometer test is similar to the sunlight resistant test, however the duration of
the test is just 300 hours (as opposed to 720 hours for a Sunlight Resistant
listing).
Wet Location
Cable Marking: WET or WET LOCATION
Wet Location cable has insulated conductors that are not electrically
compromised by water. To achieve this rating, conductors are submerged in
water for at least 12 weeks. At several intervals, the resistance of the
insulation is measured to monitor degradation in the effectiveness of the
insulation. A cable evaluated and marked for wet locations often incorporates
other outdoor cable features as well, such as water blocking and sunlight
resistance.
Direct Burial
Cable Marking: DIRECT BURIAL, DIR BURIAL or DIR BUR
As the name implies, a Direct Burial cable can be buried directly – without
conduit. To qualifyas direct burial, a cable must pass two tests: a mechanical
water absorption test of insulation and a crush test. The water absorption
test validates that conductors are impervious to water.The crush test assesses
the cable jackets’ durability by subjecting the cable to a force of 1,000
pounds for 60 seconds. The cable only passes if its jacket and the insulation
of all conductors show no signs of splits, tears, cracks or ruptures.
Water Blocked
Noted in cable specification
In the unlikely event that a cable’s protective jacket is compromised, a water
blocked cable will completely prevent the flow of water along the length of
the cable. This provides extra insurance against the possibility of water
reaching and damaging connected devices. Water blocking can be achieved by
various methods, including gels, swellable tapes and powders. But just because
a cable includes a one of these materials, doesn’t necessarily mean it is
water blocked. To be truly water blocked, the cable much pass a specific water
blocking test.
