DOEPFER A-100PBK Keyboard Case Modular System

Product Information

The A-100 Analog Modular System is a product by Doepfer Musikelektronik GmbH. It is a modular synthesizer system designed for creating electronic music. The system includes various modules that can be connected and configured to create unique soundscapes
and effects.

The A-100 system is compatible with the common manual which applies to all A-100 cases. It is important to refer to the enclosed common manual in addition to this supplement for complete instructions on operating the system.

INTRODUCTION

This manual is a supplement to the common manual which is valid for all A-100 cases. Therefore please pay attention also to the enclosed common manual for all A-100 cases.

A-100PBK is very similar to the standard A-100 Base A-100PB. In addition the A-100PBK is equipped with a 37 keys keyboard (Fatar 37TP/9 semi weighted) and monophonic aftertouch mounted into the lid of the case. The keyboard is wired to a 2HP adapter module via a 3.5mm stereo cable. The adapter module is mounted at a suitable position in the upper or lower row of the A-100PBK. The adapter module has a midi output available (3.5 mm stereo midi standard) which outputs the midi data of the keyboard (midi channel 1, lowest note number 36, note on/off and aftertouch). This socket is connected to the midi receiver via a suitable midi cable. A 3.5mm-to-DIN5 adapter cable is included with the A-100PBK. For example the polyphonic (A-190-5) or monophonic CV/Gate interface (A-190-3, A-190-4) can be used as midi receiver. If the midi receiver is also equipped with a 3.5mm connector for midi in a second 3.5mm stereo cable has to be used for the midi connection (not included). By means of two jumpers one can choose between the two midi standards for 3.5 mm midi connectors.

Important notes

  • In the area above the keyboard no modules with more than about 40 mm total height have to be mounted (e.g. no joystick modules)
  • Even the pre-patching of the modules has to be less than 40 mm, no “stackcables” can be used
  • Before the lid is mounted to the A-100PBK one has to check carefully if there is sufficient space for the keyboard across the full width. Otherwise the lid must not be mounted as the keyboard may be damaged.
  • Damages of the keyboard because of insufficient space (e.g. because of modules or patch cables with more than 40 mm total height) are not covered by warranty.
  • The lid of the A-100PBK does not fit to the A-100PB, as the A-100PBK is about 50 mm longer because of the keyboard dimensions

Operation

  • Open the two supports that are used to fix the lid to the base of the A-100PBK

  • Lift the lid carefully and put the lid in front of the base as shown in the picture on the front page.

  • Remove the mains cable, the 3.5mm stereo cable, the special midi cable and the 1.6A fuse. These parts are included in bags which are fixed to the mounting rails by means of cable tiers.

  • If the A-100PBK is connected to 115V mains voltage remove the built-in 800mA fuse and replace it by the enclosed 1.6A fuse. The fuse holder is part of the IEC mains inlet at the rear panel. It is described in detail in the user’s manual for all A-100 cases.

  • Connect the socket at the left side below the keyboard by means of the 3.5mm stereo cable to the socket “to A-100PBK” of the adapter module:

  • Connect the “Midi Out” socket of the adapter module by means of the special midi cable to the midi receiver provided that it is equipped with a 5 pin midi socket.

  • If the midi receiver is equipped also with a 3.5mm stereo socket a 3.5mm stereo cable has to be used for the connection between A-100PMB and the midi receiver (not included with the A-100PMB)..

  • Connect A-100PBK to mains by means of the mains cable and turn it on. The mains switch is located at the rear panel. Now the control LED of the adapter module has to light up.

  • When you play on the keyboard the midi receiver should respond. The A-100PBK transmits all midi data on midi channel 1: note messages in the note range 36-72 and monophonic aftertouch messages. The settings of the midi receiver have to match these specifications. The midi parameters of the A-100PBK cannot be changed by the user.

  • If for the connection between A-100PBK and the midi receiver a 3.5mm stereo cable is used and the receiver does not respond as expected it may have to do with the two different standards for 3.5 mm midi connections. In this case rotate the two jumpers on the pc

  • board of the adapter module by 90 degrees. For details refer to the picture at the end of this manual.

  • At the top of the pc board an auxiliary 3-pin connector is located. It can be used for the optional internal midi connection to another module. The signals GND, midi out and +5V are available. Usually only GND and midi are required for internal midi connections. The internal receiver module has to feature a suitable midi in connector (usually GND and midi).
