ROOFTOP TENT INSTALLATION
The Tuatara Plateau can be fitted to smaller vehicles as long as the fitted roof rack or crossbars support a dynamic weight load of 75kg or higher. We recommend using only permanent roof racks and crossbars. The distance between the car roof and the bottom of the roof rack should be no less than 3cm. The roof rack or crossbars must be between 80-100cm distance apart.
- Decide on the orientation of your Rooftop Tent. Ensure the two mounting rails attached to the Rooftop Tent are fixed to the correct position and allow for even weight distribution.
- Carefully lift the Rooftop Tent onto the roof rack. This will require two people. Position the tent in the center of your vehicle. Ensure the roof racks are evenly spread under the Rooftop Tent. The three latches indicate the opening side of the Rooftop Tent. We recommend keeping the hardshell facing front to rear of the vehicle for maximum frame strength.
- To help fit the mounting brackets onto thinner roof racks, we supply roof rack mounting spacers. Use these to make your Rooftop Tent more secure.
- Insert the supplied M8 x 60 bolts through the holes on the grooved side of the eight slide plates.
- Attach the Rooftop Tent at the four points where the roof rack and the frame meet. Slide two slide plates and M8 x 60 bolts into both ends of each mounting rail. Position so one bolt is on either side of each roof rack. Loosely hand tightens. Use the shorter M8 x 40 bolts if the distance between the car roof and the roof rack is under 4cm.
- Check the alignment and balance of the Rooftop Tent before fully tightening all bolts. Ensure all eight points are tightened evenly using the M8 nut and washers using the 13mm spanner.
- Place the plastic end caps over each end of the mounting rails to prevent wind noise.
- Attach the storage bags by sliding into the track on each side of the ladder.
Remember to remove the scratch-resistant film from the shell and base before taking the tent out for its first use.
PITCHING INSTRUCTIONS
- Before opening your Tuatara Plateau Rooftop Tent, ensure that all eight bolts are fastened tight so that the tent does not move when opening.
- Unlock the three latches on the side of the hard shell. Holding down the button on the side of the latch, pull the latch forward and unhook the strap from under the body of the tent.
- Press down on the top of the hardshell, above the compression straps to make it easier to open the Rooftop Tent. Undo all three compression straps by pressing the button under the strap.
- Push up the hardshell, the automatic gas struts will open it fully.
- Unclip the ladder’s travel strap and fully extend the ladder until you hear all the telescopic rungs click into place.
- Once the ladder is fully extended, use the ladder as leverage to fold out the extension section on the Rooftop Tent.
- Once unfolded, adjust the height of your ladder starting at the top by pushing both black buttons at the same time. Shorten the ladder rungs to the desired length so that it is at a 75° angle and the extension is sitting level with your vehicle. Excess ladder rungs should be stored at the top. Adjust the ladder to ensure it is firm and that it does not bounce or move. Undo the internal bungee that pulls the body in when packing down.
- Locate the two pole mounts on the front side of the frame. Insert the two spring poles through the canvas slits and into the holes. Angle the poles toward the inside edge of the pole mounts. Insert the top of the poles into the eyelets at the top corners of the porch. Ensure the hook ends face outward. Fold the fly back over the ends of the spring poles.
- To pitch the side windows, assemble the fiberglass poles. Feed the longer poles through the window power mesh sleeves and secure each end by placing the pole into the pole connector.
- Tension out the side windows by inserting each end of the shorter fiberglass poles into the corresponding pockets on the middle of the fly and window extension.
- Once inside the Rooftop Tent, partly open the windows to allow for airflow, this will help to reduce condensation build-up. The side windows can be rolled up for faster pitching.
- Attach the awning or annex if required (sold separately).
PACKING INSTRUCTIONS
- Ensure the Rooftop Tent is dry and clean inside and out before packing it down so that mildew or mold does not build up.
- Make sure nothing heavy or bulky is left inside the Rooftop Tent before folding. If leaving a small amount of bedding in the Rooftop Tent, store it at the top.
- Zip up the window mesh but only zip half of the window so that the air can escape from the tent when folded.
- Remove the side window fiberglass poles and the two front spring poles and place them back into the bag. Place the poles under the mattress of the tent. Reattach the bungee that will compress the body when packing down.
- Use the extended ladder as leverage to fold the Rooftop Tent in half.
- To compress the ladder, press and hold both buttons on the bottom rung to collapse it. Secure with the strap.
- Pull the hardshell down using the attached strap. When pulling the cover down ensure all the fabric is tucked inside the hard shell.
- Insert the compression straps starting in the middle and working towards the outside. Push down on the top of the Rooftop tent to ensure that the tent is fully compressed.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
PLEASE READ ALL OF THE CARE INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED WITH THIS ROOFTOP TENT BEFORE USING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE BODY OF THE TUATARA PLATEAU IS RIPSTOP POLYESTER CANVAS AND THE FLY IS RIPSTOP POLYESTER.
- Never store your Rooftop Tent away damp. Should mildew spots appear, brush them off before they become attached. Mildew damage of any kind is not covered by our warranty. DO NOT use excessive force or other harsh tools to remove spoilage from your Rooftop Tent.
- Like all assets, polyester fabric requires regular care and attention to give the life and service expected. Regular cleaning with an abundance of clean water and a soft brush, especially after exposure to saltwater will preserve your rooftop tent’s life. Do not allow bird droppings, earth, or vegetable matter to remain in contact with the fabric. NEVER USE SOAPS OR DETERGENTS.
- Polyester fabric is not fireproof, if exposed to flame or high heat sources it can ignite and burn. Always take care when using spirit or gas appliances such as stoves and lanterns near your Rooftop Tent.
- Some products contain chemicals, which can destroy your Rooftop Tent proofing and cause it to leak. Avoid using aerosol sprays and keep petrol, oil, solvents, and other similar fluids away from the fabric. Do not use these inside or around your Rooftop Tent as any damage caused by these is not covered by our warranty.
- Always remember that your Rooftop Tent is made from cloth, and should not be compared with a house. It is waterproof under normal conditions but in severe weather conditions, some water may penetrate. If you apply waterproofing to your Rooftop Tent, check that you are applying the right one for the polyester fabric type.
- Polyester fabric is not 100% colorfast and some fading will occur naturally, however; this does not affect the performance of the fabric. Do not leave your Rooftop Tent up and unattended for extended periods of time. Rooftop Tents are not designed as permanent dwellings. Rooftop Tents are guaranteed for normal camping use only.
- Check all fixtures regularly and tighten them when necessary.
- Always wash the tent and frame if the Rooftop Tent is exposed to coastal or salty conditions.
- Remove the mattress before storing it for long periods. Air the tent and mattress regularly to prevent dampness in bedding.
