The instructions for use are an integral part of this product. They contain
important safety, usage and disposal information. Familiarise yourself with
all the instructions for use and safety information before using the BMW SIM
Reader.
- Only use the product as described and for the purposes specified.

Safety instructions
Do not handle your BMW SIM card reader while driving.
For your safety, please note and follow all other applicable safety
instructions. Legal regulations must always be complied with. Please note and
obey the statutory requirements and regulations which apply in your country.
Do not store device in high-temperature environment, including heat
caused by intense sunlight or other forms of heat. Do not place device in fire
or other excessively hot environments.
Do not splash the device with or immerse the device in water.
Do not disassemble this device or attempt to re-purpose or modify it in
any inner. Do not attempt to replace any part of this device.
Avoid touching the SIM card’s metal surface. When moving apart the coils
of the key-ring with your finger nails, you may damage your nails.
During the reset, all established pairing settings with connected
vehicles will be deleted.
Electric and electronic devices as well as batteries must not be
disposed of with household waste. Consumers are obliged by law to return
electrical and electronic devices as well as batteries at the end of their
service lives to the public collecting points set up for this purpose or at
the point of sale. Details to this are defined by the national law of the
respective country. The symbol on the product, the instruction manual or the
package indicates that a product is subject to these regulations.

Principle
With the BMW SIM Reader, a nano SIM card can be connected to the vehicle and
the Personal eSIM function (SA 6PA) can be used.
General
The digital SIM card of the Personal eSIM (SA 6PA) is not supported by all mobile phone providers. The functions of the Personal eSIM can still be used with the BMW SIM Reader. A nano SIM card must be used here, e.g. an additional card of the existing mobile phone contract or a card with another contract. The SIM Reader can be registered on a maximum of 10 vehicles. When registering on a further vehicle, each time the eldest registration in the SIM Reader will be deleted.

Opening/closing the battery cover
The battery cover of the BMW SIM Reader can be removed, for example to insert
the SIM card.
Opening:
- Position the enclosed tool at the opening of the BMW SIM Reader.
- Carefully tilt the tool, arrow 1, and release the battery cover from the lock.
- Remove the battery cover, arrow 2.
Closing:
- Slide the battery cover into the slots on the rear side of the BMW SIM Reader, arrow 1.
- Press the battery cover down until it audibly engages, arrow 2.
Inserting and removing the SIM card
The SIM card slot is located under the battery cover on the underside of the
BMW SIM Reader.
To insert the SIM card, the BMW SIM Reader must be opened.
- Remove the battery cover.
- Insert the SIM card into the slot with the contact surface facing down until the SIM card engages.
- Close the battery cover.
After inserting the SIM card, the SIM Reader is ready for operation.
To remove the SIM card, press the visible edge of the inserted SIM card and
let go. The snap-IN mechanism will unlock and the SIM card will slide out.
Registering the BMW SIM Reader on the vehicle
The BMW SIM Reader must be registered once on the vehicle.
Conditions for registration are:
- vehicle is equipped with Personal eSIM (SA 6PA)
- standby state of the vehicle is switched on
- vehicle is stationary
- active Connected Drive contract
- BMW ID is entered in the vehicle, driver identification is defined and synchronization is activated
- mobile phone has been linked to the eSIM for the telephone function
- battery and SIM card are inserted
- BMW SIM Reader is placed in the driver or front passenger area
Steps in vehicle for registration are:

Press and hold the connect button on the SIM Reader for 6 seconds.
The BMW SIM Reader status LED flashes blue.
The BMW SIM Reader is shown on the control display. -
Select the BMW SIM Reader.
If more than one SIM Reader is shown, compare the names of the SIM Readers to
the last five digits of the serial number of your SIM reader, which is printed
on the outside of the battery cover.
After successful registration on the vehicle, the status LED of the BMW SIM
Reader lights up blue.
The signal quality of the mobile phone connection and the battery charge state
are shown in the status field on the control display.
Connecting the BMW SIM Reader
The BMW SIM Reader is automatically detected in the vehicle. Place it in the
drivers of front passengers area. If the BMW SIM Reader is already registered
in the vehicle, it is automatically connected.
Renaming the BMW SIM Reader
To rename the BMW SIM Reader in the vehicle, navigate as follows:
- “MENU”
- “All apps”
- “Mobile devices”
- “Personal eSIM”
- “BMW SIM Reader”
- “Rename SIM Reader”
- Enter new name
Removing the BMW SIM Reader
Only one SIM Reader can be registered with one BMW ID in a vehicle.
To remove the BMW SIM Reader from a BMW ID in the vehicle, navigate as
follows:
- “MENU”
- “All apps”
- “Mobile devices”
- “Personal eSIM”
- “BMW SIM Reader”
- “Remove SIM Reader”
- Confirm
Resetting the BMW SIM Reader
Resetting deletes all vehicles stored in the BMW SIM Reader and restores the
factory settings.
Use a pointed object to press the button, e.g. with a SIM needle.
Afterwards remove the SIM Reader from the vehicle via iDrive. To use the SIM
Reader again in the vehicle, it needs to be registered once.
Checking the status of the BMW SIM Reader
The current status of the BMW SIM Reader can be checked by pressing the
connect button. The status LED lights up in the corresponding colour.

Replacing the battery
Batteries or button cells for batteryoperated devices can be swallowed,
which could lead to serious or fatal injuries within two hours, for example
due to internal burns or chemical burns. There is a danger of injury or danger
to life. Keep batteries, button cells and battery operated devices out of the
reach of children. Immediately seek medical help if there is any suspicion
that a battery or button cell has been swallowed or is located in any part of
the body.
Unsuitable batteries in a battery-operated device can damage the device.
There is a risk of material damage. Always replace the discharged battery with
a battery with the same voltage, the same size and the same specification.
- Remove the battery cover.
- Lift out the battery with the tool on the positive terminal.
- Insert a 3.6 V battery of type ER14250 with the negative terminal first into the mount, arrow 1. Then press the positive terminal into the mount, arrow 2.
- Close the battery cover.
Dispose of old batteries with an authorised Service Partner, another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop, or hand them in to an authorised collection point.

FAQs
The SIM Reader cannot be registered on my vehicle.| 1. The SIM Reader can
only be used if your vehicle this fitted with the Personal eSIM option ( S
A 6 P A ). In addition, the use of the
SIM Reader may not be possible due to the version of the control units used in
the vehicle and the software used. Please ask your BMW dealer about the
compatibility of your vehicle with the BMW SIM Reader.
2. Please ensure that your vehicle has mobile phone reception.
3. If the status LED lights red during the registration process, please
repeat the registration process at a later time. If the problem occurs
repeatedly, please contact your BMW dealer.
4. Please ensure that you have completed the initial steps to set up the
Personal eSIM:
– The BMW ID has been added to the vehicle, a driver identification has been
defined (using a PIN or the allocation of a vehicle key or a digital key) and
synchronization has been activated.
– A mobile phone has been linked to the Personal eSIM to enable the telephone
function.
5. Please check that the battery in the SIM Reader is not discharged. Please
replace the battery if the status LED lights red when you press the connect
key.
6. Please ensure that the SIM Reader is in the front of the passenger cabin.

The status LED of the SIM Reader lights red before the connect key has been
pressed.| An incorrect battery has been inserted. Please only use the approved
battery type (ER14250,
3.6 V).
At the end of the SIM Reader registration process, the status LED lights red
rather than blue.| The SIM Reader has detected a problem and the registration
process has been cancelled. Please repeat the registration process at a later
time. If the problem occurs repeatedly, please contact your BMW dealer.

When I press the connect key, the status LED does not display anything.|
Please check that a SIM card has been inserted in the SIM Reader. Unless a SIM
card has been inserted, the SIM Reader will be in Off mode to save the
battery.
When the SIM Reader is being registered on the vehicle, the SIM Reader is not
shown in the Control Display.| Please ensure that the SIM Reader is in the
front of the passenger cabin and repeat the registration process.
I want to register my SIM Reader on my vehicle. However, when pressing the
connect key briefly, the status LED lights permanently blue (Bluetooth
connection active) rather than green (ready for connection). Or, when pressing
the connect key for longer, the status LED lights permanently blue rather than
flashing blue (Bluetooth paring mode).| Please ensure that there is no other
vehicle in the vicinity on which the SIM Reader has already been registered.
If necessary, lock the other vehicle.
The SIM Reader does not automatically connect to my vehicle although it has
previously been registered successfully.| 1. Please ensure that the SIM
Reader is in the vehicle, ideally in the front of the passenger cabin.
2. Please check that the battery in the SIM Reader is not discharged. Please
replace the battery if status LED lights red when you press the connect key.
3. Please check that your BMW ID is activated and a different BMW ID has not
been activated (for example by using a different vehicle key).
When registering the SIM Reader, the “Set up with SIM card” option is not
available.| 1. First of all, check whether updating the app and services in
your vehicle rectifies the problem:
“MENU” -> “All apps” -> “System settings” –
“Update apps and services” -> “Search for updates” -> Follow the instructions on the Control Display.
Then repeat the steps to register the SIM Reader on the vehicle.
2. The Personal eSIM cannot be activated in all BMW vehicles with the BMW SIM Reader. There are exclusions relating to the control unit version installed in the vehicle and the software used. Please ask your BMW dealer about the compatibility of your vehicle with the BMW SIM Reader.

The “Personal eSIM” menu entry is not displayed in the “Mobile devices” menu.| Please check whether your vehicle has the Personal eSIM option ( S A 6 P A ). Please ask your BMW dealer about the compatibility of your vehicle with the BMW SIM Reader.
I cannot use the telephone with the Personal eSIM although the Personal eSIM has been successfully activated with the SIM Reader.| 1. Please ensure that the SIM card you are using has been enabled for telephony. Contact your mobile phone provider for more information.
2. Please check whether your telephone allowance or credit on your mobile phone contract has been fully used.
3. Please ensure that when you set up the Personal eSIM, you have enabled “Telephony”. You can adjust this in the vehicle as follows: “MENU” –> “All apps” –> “Mobile devices”
–> “Personal eSIM” –> Enable “Telephony using eSIM”
I cannot use mobile data using the Personal eSIM (for personal hotspot or broadcasting content on the BMW Theatre Screen) although the Personal eSIM has been successfully activated with the SIM Reader.| 1. After activating the Personal eSIM using the SIM Reader, it may take up to three minutes for the data connection to be established.
2. Please ensure that the SIM card you are using has been enabled for mobile data. Contact your mobile phone provider for more information.
3. Please check whether your mobile data allowance on your mobile phone contract has been fully used.
4. Please ensure that when you set up the Personal eSIM, you have enabled “Mobile data”. You can adjust this in the vehicle as follows:
“MENU” –> “All apps” –> “Mobile devices”
–> “Personal eSIM” –> Enable “Mobile data using eSIM”

I cannot use mobile data with the Personal eSIM outside my home country although the Personal eSIM has been successfully activated with the SIM Reader.| Please ensure that when you set up the Personal eSIM, you have enabled “Data roaming”. You can adjust this in the vehicle as follows:
“MENU” –> “All apps” –> “Mobile devices” –> “Personal eSIM” –> Enable “Data roaming”
What costs will I incur if I use the “Personal eSIM” together with the BMW SIM Reader in my vehicle?| Using the “Personal eSIM” with the BMW SIM Reader in your vehicle will not incur any costs from BMW. Depending on your mobile phone contract, you may incur costs with the mobile phone provider from which you have purchased the SIM card for the SIM Reader.
The display in my vehicle says that the SIM card in my SIM Reader is blocked.| To unblock your SIM card, you should use the PUK (personal unblocking key) which you received with your SIM card from your mobile phone provider. If the problem persists, please contact your mobile phone provider.
I wish to change the PIN for my SIM card.| The PIN for the SIM card cannot be changed in the SIM Reader or in the vehicle. Please remove the SIM card from the SIM Reader and insert it into a mobile device. You can then change the PIN in the settings. Then insert the SIM card back into the SIM Reader. When you reconnect the SIM Reader to the vehicle, you will be asked to enter the new PIN. Please note that in this case you only have two attempts to enter the correct PIN.

Can I use more than one SIM Reader in my vehicle?| A BMW SIM Reader can only be used in a vehicle linked to a BMW ID. You can register and use an additional SIM Reader in the same vehicle using an additional BMW ID.
I want to register my SIM Reader on my vehicle with an additional BMW ID.| A BMW SIM Reader can only be used in a vehicle linked to a BMW ID. You can register and use an additional BMW ID in the same vehicle using the SIM Reader which has already been registered. However, it will be removed from the BMW ID with which it was previously registered in the vehicle.
I have lost my SIM Reader and wish to register a new one on my vehicle.| Please delete your BMW ID from your vehicle and then add it to the vehicle again. You can then register the new SIM Reader in your vehicle.
I want to return or sell my vehicle. How can I remove the SIM Reader from the vehicle?| There are several ways of doing this:
1. Delete your personal data in the vehicle (recommended if you intend to return or sell the vehicle): Please refer to “Deleting personal data in the vehicle” in the vehicle owner’s manual.
2. Delete your BMW ID from the vehicle (not recommended if you intend to return or sell the vehicle).
3. Remove the BMW SIM Reader from your BMW ID (not recommended if you intend to return or sell the vehicle):
“MENU” –> “All apps” –> “Mobile devices”
–> “Personal eSIM” –> Select the SIM Reader you use –> “Remove SIM Reader”
