Introduction and Compatibility

  • The unit is designed to provide a direct fit to replace factory radio for 1998-2013 Harley-Davidson® models (Electra Glide®, Street Glide® and Road Glide®).
  • Connect your factory wiring harness and connectors to this unit to retain functionality including handlebar audio controls. However, the following features are not compatible: factory amplified systems, intercom, CB, rear volume controls, 1998-2005 Ultra rear speakers, and factory equipped satellite radio systems.

Safety Precautions

Discontinue use and contact your dealer or our technical support. Using the product in this condition may result in permanent damage to the system.

Installation Precautions

  • Before installation, disconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle battery to prevent damage to the product, fire, and/or possible injury.
  • Observe the safety and operating instructions of the devices which are connected to the product.
  • This product is resistant against splashing water. Do not submerge.

Environmental Care
Do not throw away the product with normal household waste at the end of its life. Follow your local laws if/when disposing of electronic products. By doing this, you help preserve the environment.

Control Panel Description

  1. Dedicated mounting bracket
    Use the accessory mounting bracket to secure a dedicated external amplifier, such as BOSS model BHD3F, to the top of the unit. BHD3F (sold separately) includes an amplifier and two speakers.

  2. POWER/SOURCE

    • Press to power the unit on; Hold down to power the unit off.
    • Select a source.
  3. PRESET
    In FM/AM source, select a stored radio station.
    In SXM source, access the preset channel list.

    • Press to enter source-related settings.
    • Press and hold to enter system settings.
  4. Access external accessory power control.

  5. Adjust brightness of screen and button lights: high, medium and low.

    • During USB or Bluetooth audio play, select the previous or next audio file; hold down to fast search.
    • In FM/AM source, tune to a radio station.
    • In SXM source, select a channel.
  6. Function knob

    • Rotate to adjust volume, or to navigate menu options.
    • Press to confirm a selection.
    • During media playbac, start, pause or resume play.
    • In FM/AM source, mute or restore volume.
    • In SXM source, replay the selected channel.
    • In FM/AM source, select a radio band (FM1/ FM2/FM3/AM1/AM2).
    • Return to the previous menu level, or exit menu settings.

Power Connection (Plug and Play)
To power the unit, simply connect your Harley- Davidson® factory harness to the unit.

Other Connections

  1.  Connect to a USB flash drive for music playback; or charge a mobile phone (1.5A).
  2. Bluetooth antenna for better reception. Never cut, short or ground this wire.
  3. Connect to a FM/AM radio antenna (not included) for radio reception.
  4. Connect to a mobile phone or MP3 player for music playback.
  5. Connect to a SiriusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner (not included) for SXM radio reception.
  6. Connect to external lighting for power supply (350mA max load).
  7. Connect to an external device/amplifier (not included) for power control.
  8. Connect to the subwoofer input on an external amplifier for sound output.
  9. Connect to the front audio input on an external amplifier for sound output.
  10. Connect to the rear audio input on an external amplifier for sound output.

Mounting

See the section “Installation Precautions”. Disconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle battery prior to installation. Install the unit where it does not interfere with your driving. If you must modify the vehicle for the installation, make sure you do not impair the safety andstructural integrity of the vehicle. Before you drill or cut any holes, investigate your vehicle’s layout very carefully. Take special care when you work near the fuel tank, fuel lines, hydraulic lines and electrical wiring.

Mount the Unit
This unit is designed to replace your factory stereo, and use your existing factory wire harness to plug and play.

  1. Finish wiring connection to the unit. (P.5)
  2. Power on the unit. Perform a function test to ensure correct operation.
  3. Access the factory fairing stereo opening. Correctly place the unit in the opening, Secure the unit on both sides using four factory bolts. Ensure the unit is firmly attached to avoid vibration while riding. Make sure connection cables are not pinched or damaged by sharp objects or moving parts.

Mount a Dedicated Amplifier (Optional)
This unit is equipped with a fixed OEM style mounting bracket that can be used to secure a third-party accessory such as a dedicated amplifier (BOSS model BHD3F – sold separately) on top of the unit.

What You Need

  • Make sure your Harley-Davidson® motorcycle has sufficient factory stereo opening space (minimum 4.6”/115mm height) to mount a dedicated amplifier on top of this unit.
  • Purchase the product (BOSS model BHD3F) which comes with the dedicated amplifier and two speakers.
  • Mount the dedicated amplifier on top of this unit. For mounting instructions, refer to the Installation Instructions provided with BHD3F.

Power On/Off

  • To power the unit on, press SOURCE .
    • When powered on, the unit switches to the last selected source and the button lights are illuminated.
  • To power the unit off, press and hold SOURCE .
    • When powered off, the display and the button lights are turned off.

Set Clock

  1. Press and hold to display system settings.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [TIME], then press the function knob to enter time setting options.
  3. Rotate the function knob to select the following time options.
    • 12/24 hour
    • Hour
    • Minute
  4. Press the function knob to confirm the selection, then rotate the function knob to set values. Press the function knob again to confirm the setting.
  5. Repeat Step 3 and 4 to complete the clock setting, then press to exit the settings.

Adjust Volume

  • To increase or decrease volume, rotate the function knob.
  • To mute or restore volume, press . During media playback, pause also occurs.

To adjust subwoofer volume

  • Press the function knob until “SUB-W” icon is displayed, then rotate the function knob to adjust subwoofer volume.

To set volume balance

  • To adjust left and right volume balance, press the function knob until “BALANCE” icon is displayed, then rotate the function knob until you are pleased with the sound and a suitable balance is found.
  • To adjust front and rear volume balance, press the function knob until “FADER” icon is displayed, then rotate the function knob until the sound has a satisfying depth.

Adjust Screen/Button Brightness

  • Press to select a brightness level for screen and button lights: High, Medium or Low.

FM/AM Radio

You can listen to FM or AM radio, and preset the radio stations. The preset radio stations will be retained if the unit is disconnected from the vehicle’s battery.

Select a Radio Band

  1. Press SOURCE to display source options.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [RADIO], then press the function knob to confirm the selection.
  3. Press repeatedly to select FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 or AM2.

Tune to a Radio Station

  1. Select an FM or AM radio band.
  2. Press briefly. The unit will find a station with strong reception.
    • If an FM radio station with stereo signal is reached, “ST” will be displayed.
  3. Repeat the steps above until your find your desired station.

To tune to a weak station

  1. Press and hold to enter manual tuning mode. “MANUAL SEEK” is displayed briefly.
  2. Press  repeatedly to search by frequency step until you find a desired station with acceptable reception.
    • Note: Manual tuning mode will automatically exit after five seconds of button inactivity.

Store Radio Stations
Each radio band (FM1/FM2/FM3/AM1/AM2) can store six radio stations.

  1. In FM/AM source, press to display radio setting menu.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [AUTO STORE], then press the function knob to start searching radio stations.
    • All FM or AM stations will be stored in FM or AM bands. The first stored station will be automatically broadcast.

To select a stored station

  • Press PRESET repeatedly to select a stored station, then press the function knob to confirm.

Radio Settings
You can access the radio menu to change settings for your radio.

  1. In radio source, press to display radio settings menu.

  2. Rotate the function knob to select an option, then press the function knob to confirm the selection.

    • [LOCAL]: Select [ON] when most FM stations are strong enough (e.g. in urban areas). Only the stations with strong signal will be received. Select [OFF] when most FM stations are weak (e.g. in the countrysides). Stations with both strong and weak signals will be received.
    • [AUTO STORE]: Press the function knob to search and store FM or AM radio stations.
    • [TUNER REGION]: Select a country or region you are in to receive radio signal.
    • [RDBS]: Enable or disable RDBS. When enabled, the unit will receive and display RDBS information (i.e.
      station name, program type or other dynamic/static message) carried by FM radio signals. Not all FM radio
      stations will have or display RDBS information.
  3. Press to exit the settings.

SiriusXM is where moments happen. It brings you ultimate entertainment.

  • Listen in your car, on your phone, online and at home.

A SiriusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner and subscription are required. For more information, visit www.siriusxm.com.

Preparation

Step 1: Connect a SiriusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner (not included) to the SIRIUSXM INPUT (SiriusXMReady ®) connector on the back of this unit. (P.5)

  • After installing your SiriusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner and antenna, power on the head unit and select SiriusXM mode. You should be able to hear the SiriusXM preview channel on Channel 1.
  • If you cannot hear the preview channel, please check the installation instructions to make sure your SiriusXM-Connect Tuner is properly installed.

Step 2: Check your Radio ID for activation.

  • The SiriusXM Radio ID is required for activation and can be found by tuning to Channel 0 as well as by looking on the label found on the SiriusXM Vehicle Tuner and its packaging.
  • The Radio ID does not include the letters I, O, S or F.

Step 3: Activate the subscription.

Step 4: Confirm the activation.

  • As part of the activation process, the SiriusXM satellites will send an activation message to your SiriusXM Vehicle Tuner. When your head unit detects that the Tuner has received the activation message, your head unit will display [Subscription Updated].
  • Once subscribed, you can tune to channels in your subscription plan. Note, the activation process usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, but may take up to an hour. Your head unit will need to be powered on and receive the SiriusXM signal to obtain the activation message.

Access SiriusXM Radio

  1. Press SOURCE to display source options.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [SIRIUSXM], then press the function knob to confirm the selection.
    The unit will switch to SiriusXM radio broadcast interface.

Select a Channel
You can select a channel via one of the followings.

  • In SiriusXM source, press to select the previous or next channel.
  • In SiriusXM source, press to access SiriusXM settings menu.

Rotate the function knob to select [CHANNEL] or [CATEGORY] then press the function knob to access the channel or category lists.

Or select [DIRECT TUNE] to display the numeric keypad. Use to navigate between digit fields, rotate the function knob to change digits, and press the function knob to confirm each digit selection.

Preset a Channel

  1. In SiriusXM source, select a channel to play.
  2. Touch and hold PRESET . The current channel will be stored as a preset. Repeat the steps above to preset more channels.

To select a preset

  1. In SiriusXM source, press PRESET to access the preset channel list.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select a preset, and press the function knob to confirm.

Replay SiriusXM Content
The SiriusXM Vehicle Tuner can automatically buffer broadcast content. You can replay the last 60 minutes of the content from the current channel. When you select a stored/preset channel, you can replay up to 30 minutes.

  • To play or pause, press .
  • To skip to the previous or next track, press .
  • To search fast backward or forward, press and hold .

Parental Control
This feature allows you to restrict access to any SiriusXM channels, including those with mature content. A password is required to tune to a locked channel.

  1. In SiriusXM source, press to access SiriusXM settings menu.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [PARENTAL CONTROLS], then press the function knob to confirm. A numeric keypad is displayed.
  3. Enter “0000” password to access the channel list.
  4. In the channel list, select a channel to lock.

Bluetooth streaming

When you can stream music from your mobile device (e.g. a mobile phone) to the unit for the first time, you must pair the unit with your mobile device through Bluetooth.

  1. On your mobile device, enable Bluetooth then select “Boss Audio ELITE BEHDX98” to pair the unit with your mobile device. If prompted for password, input “0000” on your mobile device.
    • When the unit connects to your mobile device, the icon at the top of the unit’s screen is displayed.
    • The unit automatically connects the last paired device each time the two are powered on. To connect a second Bluetooth device, you have to disconnect the currently connected device then repeat the steps above to pair with a second device.

Playback control

  1. Switch to Bluetooth source.
    Press SOURCE to display source options. Rotate the function knob to select [BT MUSIC], then press the function knob to confirm the selection.

    • Note: Bluetooth source selection is not possible if Bluetooth connection is not made on the unit.
  2. Play audio files from the connected mobile device. Music will be streamed to the unit.

    • For best sound performance, set the volume of your mobile device to maximum, then adjust the volume through volume control on the unit.
    • Note: If there is distortion heard, you may need to turn the volume of the mobile device down a level or two.
  3. Control playback as follows.

    • To pause or resume play, press .
    • To select the previous or next music file, press .
    • To search fast, press and hold .
    • If there is an incoming call during playback, music will automatically pause and resume after the call ends.

USB Playback

This unit can play audio files stored on a USB flash drive.

  1. Insert a USB flash drive to the USB port on the unit.

  2. Switch to USB source.
    Press SOURCE to display source options. Rotate the function knob to select [USB], then press the function knob to confirm the selection.

    • Audio files from the USB device will play automatically.
    • During playback, the display shows the following information: Artist Name – Song Title – Album Name
    • Play Time.
  3. Control playback as follows.

    • To pause or resume play, press .
    • To select the previous or next music file, press .
    • To search fast, press and hold .

Select Play Mode

  1. During USB playback, press to display USB settings menu.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [REPEAT] or [SHUFFLE], then press the function knob to confirm the selection.
    • [REPEAT]: Press the function knob to select a repeat play mode.
    • : Play the current music folder repeatedly.
    • ALL: Play all the audio files repeatedly.
    • : Play the current track repeatedly.
    • [SHUFFLE]: Press the function knob to select a random play mode.
    • : Play the current music folder randomly.
    • ALL: Play all the audio files randomly.
    • OFF: Cancel random play mode.

Search by file

  1. During USB playback, press to display USB settings menu.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select [SEARCH], then press the function knob to confirm the selection. The files in the current music folder are accessed and displayed.
  3. Rotate the function knob to select a file. Press to go to the folder level.
  4. To play the selected file, press the function knob.

Sound Settings

This section helps you change the sound settings of this unit.

Sound Mode and Equalizer Setting

  1. Press and hold to display system settings.
  2. Navigate to [AUDIO] > [13 BAND EQ].
    • To select a preset sound mode (FLAT, ROCK, CLASSIC, ACOUSTIC, DANCE, ELECTRONIC, HIP HOP), rotate the function knob.
    • To customize equalizer settings, rotate the function knob to select [CUSTOM] then press the function knob to access the 13-band graphic equalizer settings. Rotate the function knob to adjust decibel output in each frequency band and press the function knob to confirm. Experiment your settings until optimal result is found.

Crossover Frequency Setting

  1. Press and hold to display system settings.
  2. Navigate to [AUDIO] > [CROSSOVER].
  3. To set crossover frequencies for front speakers, rear speakers and subwoofer, rotate the function knob to select [FRONT], [REAR] and [SUBWOOFER] respectively then press the function knob to confirm. To return to the previous option level, press .
    • [HPF] (for front and rear speakers): Adjust High Pass Filter (HPF) for main audio (radio and media play). Only the frequencies above the one you set will be received to reproduce sound.
    • [SLOPE] (for front and rear speakers): Set a high pass filter slope in decibels. An HPF slope determines the rate that attenuates the frequencies below the set one.
    • [LPF] (for subwoofer): Adjust Low Pass Filter (LPF) for main audio (radio and media play). Only the frequencies below the one you set will be received to reproduce sound.
    • [SLOPE] (for subwoofer): Set a low pass filter slope in decibels. A LPF slope determines the rate that attenuates the frequencies above the set one.

System Settings

This section helps you change the system settings of this unit.

  1. Press and hold to display system settings.
  2. Rotate the function knob to select an option, then press the function knob to confirm.
    • [AUDIO]: Access the following audio settings.
    • [13 BAND EQ]: Select a preset sound mode or customize equalizer settings. See the section “Sound Settings” on page 14.
    • [CROSSOVER]: Set crossover frequencies for the speakers and subwoofer. See the section “Sound Settings” on page 14.
    • [SOURCE GAIN]: Customize volume of each source independently.
    • [INTERNAL AMP]: Enable or disable internal amplifier output.
    • [BT PAIRING]: Enable or disable Bluetooth pairing.
    • [TIME]: See the section “Set Clock” on page 7.
    • [LED COLOR]: Set the button illumination amber or white.
    • [SOFTWARE]: Access the following options.
    • [VERSION]: View the firmware information of this unit.
    • [UPDATE]: The unit can be updated if needed. Connect a flash USB drive with a newer firmware to the unit’s USB port (make sure the upgrade file is unzipped and saved in the root directory of the USB flash drive), select USB source, and press the function knob when upgrade prompt is displayed.
    • [FACTORY DEFAULT]: Select and reset [AUDIO], [SYSTEM] or [SIRIUSXM] to factory settings. The customized settings related to audio, system or SiriusXM will be erased after resetting.

Audio Input

This unit can play audio from a mobile phone or MP3 player through 3.5 mm audio input.

  1. Connect the 3.5 mm audio input (labeled AUX-IN) on the unit to the headphone jack on your mobile phone (or MP3 player), using the following cable.
    • For a mobile phone with a headphone jack, use a 3.5 mm audio cable (not included).
    • For a mobile phone with a USB-C port, use a USB-C to 3.5 mm audio cable (not included).
    • For an iPhone, use a lightning to 3.5 mm audio cable (not included).
  2. Switch to AUX source. Press SOURCE to display source options. Rotate the function knob to select [AUX], then press the function knob to confirm the selection.
  3. Start music playback on your mobile phone. Audio will play through the unit.
    • For best sound performance, set the volume of the connected device to maximum.
    • Use the controls on the connected device for playback control.

Accessory Power Control

The unit can connect and power control the connected accessories (not included, e.g. light bars or whips). The accessories load is rated at 350 mA.

  1. Connect your external accessories to the unit through the unit’s wires marked “DC12V-1” (brown) or marked “DC12V-2” (brown/white). See the section “Wiring” on page 5.
  2. To turn on or off the connected accessories, press on the front panel to display the power button option 1 and 2. Rotate the function knob to select the power button option, then press the function knob to enable or disable the power output.

Audio Output
You can output audio from the unit to an external amplifier.

  1. Using RCA audio cables (not included), connect the RCA audio outputs (labeled Front Line Out L/R, Rear Line Out L/R, SUB-W Out) on the unit to the RCA audio inputs on an amplifier (not included). See the section “Wiring” on page 5.
  2. Start playback on this unit and audio will output to the connected amplifier.

Troubleshooting

If you have problems using this product, check the following points before you request service. If you still have a problem, contact our Customer Service for further assistance.

Problem Solution
Unit not responsive Restart the unit by turning the vehicle off for a few

seconds, then turning the vehicle back on.

If the problem still persists, disconnect the unit from the source battery for a few minutes and then reconnect.

No power| This unit is powered through connection to your Harley-Davidson® factory wiring harness. Connect the factory harness to this unit for power supply.
Check that the power/ignition/ground wire of your Harley-Davidson® harness are correctly connected.
Check that the vehicle ignition power (ACC) is switched on.
No sound| Check that playback is not paused, or turn up the volume.
Incorrect source input. Press SOURCE to select the correct source.
Check that the connected speakers are not faulty.
Problem| Solution
---|---
Bluetooth not connected / Streaming not possible| Check that Bluetooth on your mobile device is enabled.
Make sure your mobile device is located in Bluetooth range.
This unit is connected with another Bluetooth device. Disconnect the current Bluetooth connection.
Poor audio quality from Bluetooth connection.| Move your mobile device closer to the unit, or remove obstacles or sources of interference that are affecting Bluetooth reception.
USB not playable| Files are not supported, or the USB device is not compatible with the unit.

Change the media files or USB device.

SiriusXM Radio
“Check Antenna” appears.| Check that the antenna cable is connected to the SirirusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner.
Check the antenna cable for damage and kinks. Replace the antenna cable if damaged. SiriusXM products are available at your local car audio retailer or online at https://shop.siriusxm.com/all-parts/.
“Check Tuner” appears.| Check that SiriusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner is securely connected to the unit

, or the Tuner is damaged.

“Subscription Updated” appears.| Your subscription is updated. Press the appropriate button to clear the message.
“Channel Unavailable” appears.| The selected channel is not available. For more information about SiriusXM channel lineup, visit www.siriusxm.com.
“No Signal” appears.| Verify that your vehicle is outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
Verify that the SiriusXM magnetic base antenna is mounted on a metal surface on the outside of the vehicle.
Move the SiriusXM antenna away from any obstructions.
Check the antenna cable for damage and kinks.
Consult the SiriusXM-Connect Vehicle Tuner installation manual for more information on antenna installation.
“Channel Unsubscribed” appears.| The selected channel is not subscribed.
