RISK OF ACCIDENTS
The list below indicates common risks of accidents in connection with working with ladders. The list has formed the basis for the content in these instructions, but does not cover all conceivable risks that can occur when working with ladders.

Stability risks

  • Incorrect positioning of the ladder, for example the incorrect angle for a freestanding ladder or incomplete extension of a step ladder/folding ladder.
  • Sliding of the bottom end of the ladder (ladder sliding out from the wall).
  • Sliding sideways, falling sideways or falling over the top rung, for example as a result of attempting to stretch too far or insufficient bearing of the ladder’s upper support point.
  • The condition of the ladder, for example lack of non-slip feet.
  • Stepping off at height from an inadequately secured ladder.
  • Ground conditions, for example soft surface with inadequate support, or sloping, slippery or fouled surface.
  • Unfavourable weather conditions, for example strong wind.
  • Collision between ladder and for example door or vehicle.
  • Unsuitable ladder for the purpose, for example too short or unsuitable type.

Handling risks

  • Transport of ladder to workplace.
  • Putting up and taking down ladder.
  • Carrying objects up and down the ladder.

Slipping and stumbling risks

  • Unsuitable footwear.

  • All-advised and dangerous behavior of user, for example climbing two rungs at once or sliding down along side rails.

Structural risks

  • The condition of the ladder, for example damaged side rails.
  • Overloading of ladder.

Electrical safety risks

  • Work that must be conducted with voltage, for example troubleshooting.
  • Do not place the ladder too near live electrical equipment, for example power lines.
  • Damage to protective casing, insulation etc. on electrical equipment caused by the ladder.
  • Using for work with or near electrical equipment, unsuitable type of ladder.

USE

CHECK THE LADDER
Take the following points into consideration.

  • Check that the feet and side rails are not deformed, cracked, corroded or broken.
  • Check that the attachments of other components in the side pieces are in good condition.
  • Check that screw unions and other unions are firmly in place and not corroded.
  • Check that no steps/rungs are missing, loose, worn, corroded or damaged.
  • Check that the hinges between the front and back parts are not damaged, loose or corroded.
  • Check that the locking bar, back bar and corner bar are not deformed, loose or corroded.
  • Check that no ladder hooks are missing, loose, worn, corroded or damaged and that they engage correctly with the rungs.
  • Check that no guide links are missing, loose, worn, corroded or damaged and that they engage correctly with the other half of the ladder.
  • Check that no feet/end pieces for the side rails are missing, loose, worn, corroded or damaged.
  • Check that the complete ladder is free from fouling (clay, paint, oil or grease).
  • Check that lock catches are working correctly and are not damaged or corroded.

NOTE:

  • Do not use the ladder if any parts are damaged, loose or missing, or not working properly.
  • For some types of ladders other checks should be carried out – follow the instructions of the manufacturer.

POSITIONING OCH PUTTING UP THE LADDER

  • Place the ladder in the required position at the correct angle: 65–75° or 1:4 for  ladder with rungs, with the surface of the steps horizontal for ladder with flat steps.
  • The latches should be in the locked position before use.
  • Check that the surface is smooth, level and supportive.
  • Only lean the ladder against a smooth, stable and supportive area, and secure before use.
  • Never attempt to move the ladder while one it – always climb down and move it from the ground.
  • Take into consideration the risk of collision with pedestrians, vehicles, doors etc. when positioning the ladder. If possible lock/block doors and windows in the work area (excluding emergency exits).
  • Electrical safety – examine the area for electrical risks, such as high tension power line or exposed electrical components, and do not use the ladder in areas where there are such risks.
  • The ladder should stand on its feet and not rest on a rung or step.
  • Do not put the ladder on a slippery surface, such as ice, polished surface or fouled surface, unless sufficient precautions have been taken to prevent it sliding.

HOW TO USE

  • Make sure the stepladder is anchored or suitably supported before stepping off it above ground level.
  • Do not use the ladder to climb to another level.
  • Only use the ladder for work that does not take very long.
  • Use ladders made of non-conductive material when working where there is a risk of coming into contact with live components.
  • Do not use the ladder in strong wind, heavy rain or other unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Make sure that children cannot climb or play on the stepladder.
  • Take regular breaks when in use – tiredness can put safety at risk.
  • The ladder must never be moved from the top.
  • Do not move the stepladder while someone is on it.

MAINTENANCE

  • Check the hinges and other parts of the ladder at regular intervals. Lubricate the hinges at regular intervals, but be careful not to drip oil on the rungs or side rails.
  • Hold the ladder firmly when carrying it. CLEANING
  • Clean the ladder after use.
  • Keep the ladder clean and free from foreign objects and material.

REPAIRS

  • Repairs and maintenance must be carried out by persons with the requisite competence, and in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer. A person with the requisite competence is someone who – through training at the manufacturer – has learned how to carry out repairs and maintenance.
  • For repair and maintenance of parts, e.g. the feet, contact the manufacturer or retailer.

STORAGE

  • Ladders made entirely or in part from thermoplastic, thermoset or reinforced plastic material should be stored out of reach of direct sunlight.
    • Take the following into consideration when storing ladders not in use.
    • Store the ladder in a safe place, protected from moisture, heat, weather and wind.
    • Store the ladder in a position where it cannot become deformed.
  • A suitable position could be hanging on suitable brackets or lying flat on a clean surface.
    • Store the ladder so that it cannot be damaged by vehicles, heavy objects or fouling.
    • Store the ladder so that it is not an obstruction and there is no risk of tripping over it.
    • Store the ladder so that it cannot be used by unauthorized persons.
    • If the ladder is fixed to scaffolding is should be secured so that unauthorised persons (e.g. children) cannot climb on it.
