TECHNICAL DATA

USE

  • The stepladder must be put up in the correct position, for example at the correct angle if using as a lean-to ladder (tilt angle 1:4) with the steps horizontal.

  • Locks, if available, must be fully locked before use.

  • The stepladder must be placed on a smooth, level and stable base.

  • As a lean-to ladder it must lean against a smooth, stable surface and be fastened with a stable device before use.

  • The protruding ladder section at the top of the freestanding ladder must not be stepped on. This section is only meant to lean against.

  • Never move the stepladder from the top.

  • When positioning the stepladder take into consideration the risk of collision, e.g. with pedestrians, vehicles or doors. Lock doors (not emergency exits) and windows in the work area, where possible.

  • Identify potential risks in the work area, such as high-tension cables or exposure to electrical components.

  • The stepladder must stand on its feet and not rest on a step.

  • Do not put the stepladder on slippery surfaces (for example, ice, shiny surfaces or heavily soiled surfaces) unless additional measures are taken to prevent it from slipping.

  • Do not exceed the maximum load for the stepladder.

  • Do not overreach. The user must keep the belt buckle (navel) inside the side rails and both feet on the same step when working.

  • Do not get off the stepladder at a higher level without additional safety measures, for example a suitable device to improve stability.

  • Do not use standalone ladders to get to another level.

  • Do not stand on the top three steps of a lean-to ladder.

  • Do not stand on the top two steps of a stepladder without a platform and handrail.

  • Stepladders use to access a higher level must extend at least 1 metre past the stepping off point.

  • Stepladders must only be used for light, short-duration work.

  • Take precautions to prevent children playing on the stepladder.

  • Face the stepladder when climbing up or down the steps.

  • Keep a firm grip on the steps when climbing up or down the stepladder.

  • Do not use the stepladder as a footbridge.

  • Wear suitable footwear when climbing on a stepladder.

  • Avoid work on stepladders that involves lateral tensions, for example drilling to the side in solid material (brick or concrete). Do not spend a long time on the stepladder without frequent breaks
    (tiredness is a risk factor).

  • If the stepladder is used as a lean-to ladder to reach up to a higher level it must reach up to a least one metre over the contact point.

  • Equipment carried up on a stepladder should be lightweight and easy to handle. Do not carry or use bulky and/or heavy objects on the stepladder.

  • Always keep a firm grip with at least one hand when working on the stepladder, or if this is not possible take additional safety precautions.

  • Take regular breaks when in use – tiredness can put safety at risk.

  • Do not move the stepladder while someone is on it.

  • Check that the product is suitable for the actual task.

  • Pay attention to the wind when using it outdoors.

  • Do not use the stepladder outdoors in bad weather, for example in strong wind.

MAINTENANCE

  • Check the parts on the stepladder and the hinges at regular intervals. Use low viscosity oil when it is cold. Lubricate the hinges at regular intervals, but be careful not to drip oil on the steps or side rails
  • Stepladders should be stored away from exposure to rain, snow and direct sunlight.

INSPECTION

Carry out inspections regularly:

  • Check that the legs (uprights) are not bent, twisted, dented, cracked, corroded or rotten.
  • Check that the legs (uprights) are in good condition around the fixing points for other components.
  • Check that the fixings (rivets, screws and bolts) are not missing, loose or corroded.
  • Check that the rungs/steps are not missing, excessively worn, corroded or damaged.
  • Check that the hinges between the front and rear sections are not damaged, loose or corroded.
  • Check that the locking mechanism stays horizontal and that the rear rails and corner braces are not missing, bent, loose, corroded or damaged.
  • Check that the entire stepladder is free from contaminants (e.g. dirt, mud, paint, oil and grease).
  • Check that the locking catches (if fitted) are not damaged or corroded, and check that they function properly.
  • Check that the platform (if fitted) has no missing parts or fixings and that it is not damaged or corroded.
