Thank you for choosing the Aquascape Pond Powerhead.

At Aquascape, we connect people to water the way nature intended. Since 1991, we’ve been creating and field-testing water features in order to provide you with the most reliable products and best value in the water gardening industry.

Pond Powerhead

The Aquascape Pond Powerhead is designed to create water movement and eliminate stagnant areas in ponds and water gardens, providing circulation, surface agitation, and aeration. This standalone pump does not require any pipe or plumbing, simply set the Powerhead directly in the pond or disguise it into the pond using rocks or other materials. The energy-efficient, low- voltage motor can be powered by a standard outdoor, 12-volt transformer (not included). This instruction manual will guide you through proper installation as well as recommended maintenance procedures to ensure long-term effectiveness.

Safety Information

WARNING: Risk of electric shock – This pump has not been approved for use in swimming pool or marine areas.
WARNING: To provide continued protection against risk of electric shock, connect to properly grounded, ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets only, using the following guidelines:

  • (A) Have a qualified electrician install a properly grounded receptacle outlet, acceptable for outdoor use and protected from snow and rain.
  • (B) Inspect cord before using.
  • (C) Do not use extension cords.
  • (D) Any wiring of pumps should be performed by a qualified electrician to ensure code compliance and user safety.
  • (E) Unplug pump at receptacle outlet when not in use or before removal from pond.
  • (F) To reduce risk of electrical shock, all wiring and junction connections should be made per local codes. Requirements may vary depending on usage and location.
  • (G) The power cable should be protected at all times to avoid punctures, cuts, bruises and abrasions.
  • (H) Never handle power cords with wet hands.
  • (I) Do not remove cord. Do not connect conduit to pump.
  • (J) Do not use power cable to lift pump.

Always operate the pump fully submerged. Failure to do so may overheat the pump and cause it to fail, voiding the warranty.

  • Use only in fully assembled state, paying particular attention to ensure that outer filter screen is attached to the pump. Failure to operate the pump without the filter screen will allow large debris to enter the pump and cause the pump to fail, voiding the warranty.
  • Do not wear loose clothing that may become entangled in the propeller or other moving parts.
  • Keep clear of suction and discharge openings. DO NOT insert fingers into pump with power connected.
  • Do not pump hazardous materials or liquids, such as oil, saltwater or organic solvents.
  • Do not block or restrict discharge.
  • Products returned must be cleaned, sanitized, or decontaminated, as necessary, prior to shipment to ensure that employees will not be exposed to health hazards in handling said material. All applicable laws and regulations shall apply.

IMPORTANT: Aquascape, Inc. is not responsible for losses, injury, or death resulting from a failure to observe these safety precautions, misuse or abuse of pumps or equipment.

The Pond Powerhead is a thermally protected, submersible pump for outdoor or indoor use and has been evaluated for use with water only.

Instructions

  • Carefully unpack the Pond Powerhead (Ex. 1).Aquascape-91142-Pond-Powerhead-Pump-FIG-4

  • The Pond Powerhead does not require any pipe or plumbing, allowing for quick and easy installation in new or existing water features.

  • Set the Pond Powerhead(s) in the desired location(s) in the pond or water garden (Ex. 2). Good installation locations include stagnant areas with low water movement or debris build-up.Aquascape-91142-Pond-Powerhead-Pump-FIG-5

  • Each time the powerhead turns on it will provide a slight recoil. Therefore, we recommend setting the unit in a location where the back of the unit is against a surface which will prevent the pump from moving.

  • If desired, the powerhead can be disguised into the pond using rocks or other landscape materials (Ex. 3).Aquascape-91142-Pond-Powerhead-Pump-FIG-6

  • NOTE: The powerhead will need to be accessed occasionally for maintenance. Do not make the unit inaccessible, allowing for access during maintenance procedures.
NOTE: When disguising the unit, provide space around the perimeter of the unit to avoid restriction of water intake.

  • The integrated adjustable head allows for directional flow control once it is already in position (Ex. 4). Adjust the head to focus flow in the desired direction.Aquascape-91142-Pond-Powerhead-Pump-FIG-7

  • Multiple units can be easily installed in a single system (Ex. 5).Aquascape-91142-Pond-Powerhead-Pump-FIG-8

  • Simply connect low-voltage cables using Aquascape Garden and Pond 3-Way or 6-Way Splitters (Ex. 6). A 25′ Extension Cable and 5-Outlet Extension Cable are available, making wiring easier than ever with no splicing required (Ex. 6).Aquascape-91142-Pond-Powerhead-Pump-FIG-9

  • The Pond Powerhead is rated for use between 8 and 14 volts without damaging the motor. When running longer cable lengths and/ or connecting multiple units, the Pond Powerhead may be susceptible to voltage drop, providing diminished flows. For installations susceptible to voltage drop, we recommend the use of a larger gauge cable (12 to 16-gauge), for extensions. The larger gauge cable will help to maintain the proper voltage for each motor.

  • Plug the quick-connect fitting into a 12-Volt, outdoor-rated transformer or existing low-voltage system. The Pond Powerhead is designed to operate on a power source with a maximum operating range of 9V-15V. Operating the powerhead outside of this voltage range voids the product warranty (Ex.7).

Winter Application

  • The Pond Powerhead makes it easy to winterize ponds, as the powerful flow of water positioned just below the surface of the pond will keep a hole open in the ice and ensure proper gas exchange to keep fish safe during cold winter months. The flat-bottomed design provides a sturdy base for quick and easy placement below the surface of the pond (Ex. 8). Bricks or stones can be used if needed to raise the Powerhead to the proper height.
  • If running through winter conditions, check regularly to make sure it is functioning properly. Non-running powerheads positioned close to the surface where ice forms should be removed to prevent damage. When removing the powerhead for the winter, clean with fresh water and store the pump in a frost-free location.

General Maintenance

  • Over time, depending on conditions, the powerhead may collect debris around the outside of the unit. Remove this debris from the outside of the unit to provide maximum water flow.
  • Outer/Inner Cage Cleaning:
  • Remove the single screw located at the center of the unit (Ex. 9). Depress all three external tabs and gently lift upward to remove the front cage (Ex. 10).
  • Clean the exterior and interior of the cage to remove any existing debris or buildup. If needed, use Aquascape Pump
  • Cleaner Maintenance Solution (#91143) to remove stubborn buildup.
  • Propeller Cleaning:
  • Remove the water chamber cover by rotating it counter-clockwise and gently pulling (Ex. 11).
  • Remove the propeller by pulling gently.
  • Clean the propeller and internal pump body with Aquascape Pump Cleaner Maintenance Solution (#91143), using a sponge or soft-bristled brush.
  • When reinstalling the propeller, be sure to align the three tabs with the corresponding indentations before locking into place (Ex. 12).
  • When reinstalling the cage, be sure to align the screw with the proper external tab.
