Measures before mounting
Observe the prerequisites for the mounting location
Before mounting the Outdoor Unit, carry out a site survey to determine the
correct placement of the device and the antennas for optimum RF coverage, a
stable data connection and good integration into a lightning protection
system.
The following prerequisites should be fulfilled at the mounting location:
- Access to power and network
- Access to mounting location and line of sight to surveilled area
- The available mounting structures make it possible to align the top side of the Outdoor Unit horizontally and even with the connections pointing downwards.
- The mounting structure must be firmly anchored in the ground and havesufficient load-bearing capacity. With regard to the load-bearing capacity, take into consideration that a build-up of ice can increase the weight of the device and the antennas considerably. Information on the weight of the Outdoor Unit can be found in the datasheet.
- The device may be operated only within the ambient temperature range as stated in the specifications of the datasheet.
- Weather and bird guard are available (see Mounting the weather guard on page 64 and Mounting the bird guard on page 65).

Further notes for correct mounting of an ADFA
- To avoid overloading the device, do not place the antenna in the direct vicinity of strong transmitter antennas.
- No obstacles up to a distance of 50 m from the antenna.
- Only low obstacles at a distance of between 50 m and 100 m from the antenna.
- No large structures, such as high-voltage masts or high-rise buildings up to a distance of 400 m from the antenna.
- No obstacles outside a cone with an angle of 120° underneath the direction finding antenna.
Take the lightning protection system into consideration
Take into consideration that the existing lighting and surge protection system
could be affected by the new mounting structure, e.g. the mast, the pole, the
Outdoor Unit or the antennas used.
- Replan and rebuild the lightning protection system if necessary.
- Observe country-specific requirements.
Mounting the surge protection device
NOTICE
Risk of lightning damage
Without surge protection, the Outdoor Unit could be damaged as a
consequence of atmospheric conditions (thunderstorms) and switching events.
- When mounted, the antenna and Ethernet connection must have protection against surge voltage
- Narda recommends mounting a suitable surge protection device for the respective antenna connector (e.g. DEHNgate – SPDs for Coaxial Connection: DGA G N item no. 929 044 and DGA G SMA item no. 929 039) to protect the connections from overvoltage.
- For the Ethernet application, Narda recommends mounting a surge arrester (e.g. DEHNpatch DPA CLE IP66 item no. 929 221).
- Bear in mind that mounting a surge protection device could limit the usable frequency range. Observe the information issued by the manufacturer.
Mounting the weather guard
The device has a fanless design, which reduces maintenance work to a minimum.
- Mount a shade to avoid exposure to direct sunlight and overheating of the Outdoor Unit. In the event of icing, the weight of the Outdoor Unit could increase considerably. This would lead to increased wind loading and a greater strain on the mounting points.
- If possible, take appropriate measures to protect the Outdoor Unit from icing (e.g. rain protection, wind protection, etc.).
Mounting the bird guard
- Mount a bird guard to prevent fouling or damage caused by birds.
