  9. Electronic ballast ensures optimum wattage and bulb outputAquascape-95036-Ultraklear-UV-Clarifier-FIG-5Aquascape-95036-Ultraklear-UV-Clarifier-FIG-6
  • An optional 2-Way Flow Control Valve (#88005) can be used to make sure the water flow does not exceed the UltraKlear® Maximum Flow rate. Please refer to the UltraKlear® Specification Chart included in this manual for maximum flow rate recommendations.
  • AquaForce® Solids-Handling Pond Pumps are ideal for use with the UltraKlear®
  • The AquaForce® pre-filter cage allows for the pump to be submerged directly in the pond and improves UV efficiency by pre-filtering the larger debris before reaching the UltraKlear®. Other inpond pump makes and models can also be used.
  • The UltraKlear® is designed to be located outside the pond. We recommend placing it in a location that is easy to hide and access for maintenance. The UltraKlear® can be attached to a board and set on level ground or mounted using the four screw holes in the support saddles as shown here.
  • The UltraKlear® includes three plumbing ports:
  • In–Pipe from pump (can use either end port as pond water “In”).
  • Out–Pipe back to pond (use opposite end port for discharge back to pond).
  • Optional Inlet/Outlet to assist with installation and pipe routing.Aquascape-95036-Ultraklear-UV-Clarifier-FIG-10
  • The 90º elbow fittings and Locking Rotational Ball fittings allow 360º directional movement to accommodate the plumbing configuration desired or the Multi-Hose Adapters can be mounted directly onto the UltraKlear® fixture as shown below
  • Fittings should be handtightened only and installed with the flat rubber gaskets to achieve leak-free seals.
  • NOTE: Do not use tools to attach the fittings.
  • Select the Multi-Hose Adapter based on the diameter of the tubing you are using. It is recommended to use as large of a diameter of tubing as possible (up to 1 ½ inch diameter) in order to achieve maximum water flows.
  • If using a diameter of pipe larger than the smallest section of the Multi-Hose Adapter, trim off the smaller sections to avoid any flow restriction.
  • We recommend using a hose clamp (not included) to secure tubing onto the fitting.
  • Installation of stainless steel hose clamp
  • After connecting the plumbing, plug the pump and the UltraKlear® into an outlet that is protected by a ground fault interrupter (GFI).
  • Once the pump is running and water is circulating through the UltraKlear® fixture, check for any fitting leaks where the external connections are made. Since the filter is located outside the pond, even a small leak must be corrected.
  • Check the UV indicator to confirm that the UV light is “On” inside the UltraKlear® fixture.

General Maintenance

  • The UltraKlear® UV Clarifier eliminates single-celled algae commonly referred to as green water. For most ponds the process should take approximately 1 week, however significant algae blooms may take 2-3 weeks to clear.
  • Bulb life – For effective clarification the UV bulb should be replaced after 12 months of continuous use.
  • NOTE: Even though the UV bulb still emits light, it may have lost its effectiveness at clarifying if the recommended operating time has been exceeded.
  • Cleaning/replacing the quartz sleeve and UV bulb – A dirty quartz sleeve will reduce the effectiveness of the UV bulb. Debris and mineral deposits can be cleaned using a mild acid like white vinegar or a non-abrasive calcium, lime, or rust remover with a soft bristled brush or sponge
TO ACCESS THE QUARTZ SLEEVE
  1. Always unplug both the pump and the UltraKlear® UV Clarifier before servicing.
  2. Release the latch tab by pulling/pushing it towards the ballast about ¼”.
  3. Rotate the ballast counter-clockwise about ½” to release it from the locked position and carefully slide out the ballast with quartz sleeve attached.
  4. The quartz sleeve can now be accessed for cleaning or replacement.Aquascape-95036-Ultraklear-UV-Clarifier-FIG-21
  5. If replacing or removing the quartz sleeve remove the threaded plastic collar at the base of the quartz sleeve and remove the quartz sleeve.

CHANGING THE UV BULB

  1. Grip the base of the UV bulb and pull it free from the 4-pronged socket
  2. Replace UV bulb & quartz sleeve in the reverse order they were removed
    • WARNING: Do not touch UV bulb with bare hands as the oil from skin will reduce the bulbs performance and lifespan.
    • Use a clean tissue to wipe off any dirt or smudges on the bulb and on the quartz sleeve. Also, make sure there is no moisture inside the quartz sleeve or on the bulb prior to reassembly.
  3. To reinstall the ballast slide the quartz sleeve into the UltraKlear® housing. Make sure to line up ballast flange with the matching flange shape on the UltraKlear® housing.
  4. Push ballast into the outer fixture tube and rotate clockwise to lock it into position. Push the latch tab back into place to lock the ballast in position.

REPLACING OR CLEANING THE INTERNAL CORKSCREW SLEEVE

The Corkscrew Sleeve inside the UltraKlear® housing increases the efficiency of UltraKlear® by increasing the waters contact time with the UV lamp. The swirl sleeve can be removed for cleaning or replacement if needed.

  1. Remove the ballast as shown earlier and pull the UV light and quartz sleeve out of the UltraKlear® housing.
  2. The corkscrew sleeve(s) can now be pulled free from the outer tube. You may need to tap the end of the outer tube into your palm to dislodge the tube.
  3. With the sleeve fully removed it can either be cleaned or replaced.
  4. If inserting more than one corkscrew sleeve into the UltraKlear® housing (28W and 55W fixtures), the individual swirl sleeves snap together.
    • NOTE: The swirl sleeves are not designed to be dismantled once they are connected together
  5. When reinserting the swirl sleeve insert with the raised directional arrows pointing into the UltraKlear® housing.

Winter Application

  • If your pond is subject to freezing temperatures, the UltraKlear® UV Clarifier should be shut down, drained, and stored in a frost-free location.
  • When disconnecting the tubing from the filter, the threaded fittings should be removed without the need for any tools (be careful not to lose the flat rubber washers).

Troubleshooting

REDUCED WATER FLOW

  • The UltraKlear® will reduce the water flow on the pump. It is recommended to use as large of a diameter of tubing as possible (up to 1 ½ inch diameter) in order to achieve maximum water flows.
  • The UltraKlear® internal swirl sleeve could be clogged and require cleaning.
  • Pump or plumbing may be clogged. It may be necessary to clean the pump cage screens and impeller.

UV LIGHT IS NOT ON

  • A safety cut-off switch will activate if the ballast is not properly connected to the UV housing. Check that the ballast is properly connected to the UV housing.
  • Power to the UltraKlear® has been lost. Check to be sure it’s plugged in and the ground fault breaker at the outlet is not activated.
  • UV internal bulb connection may be loose. Open up UV and inspect to make sure the bulb is securely plugged into the ballast outlet.
  • UV bulb could be beyond its life expectancy. Replace UV light.
