By itself, the Mobile Station WLAN is not sufficient to control a model railroad. The 60117 WLAN Receiver Box with a 60114/60116 Track Box, or a Central Station 2 or Central Station 3, which is operated in a suitable network (with available WLAN), are absolutely required.

About These Instructions
These instructions refer to Software Version 4.0.0.1.
The Mobile Station WLAN is provided at regular intervals with updates. These updates can also change the range of functions for the device. The differences of newer software  versions to the one described here will however be slight. Accordingly, new instructions are not generated for each software version.
In the interest of clarity, we will dispense here with explaining all points down to the last step. Rather, we will show only how the points are found and called up.

Disposal
Notes about environment protection: Products identified with a trashcan with an „X“ through it may not be disposed of at the end of their useful life with the normal household trash. Rather, they must be taken to a collection point for the recycling of electrical and electronic devices. The symbol on the product, the operating instructions, or the packaging indicates this. The materials in these products are reusable according to their identification. Help us protect the environment and preserve resources, and take this device free of charge to the appropriate recycling locations/dealers. The organization responsible for trash separation or your specialty dealer can answer questions about this. www.maerklin.com/en/imprint.html

Setup and Connections

The Mobile Station WLAN is a wireless controller that is connected to a model railroad using WLAN. To do this either of the following can be used as a receiver:

  • the 60117 WLAN Box (in conjunction with a 60114/60116 Track Box)
  • a Central Station 2/3, which is operated in a suitable network (with available WLAN) Preparation Installation of 4 micro alkaline batteries (AAA, LR03) for the voltage supply to the Mobile Station WLAN. Alternatively, nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries can also be used. The type of battery used must be set under „MSW Settings, Type of Battery“.
Never swap individual batteries. Always replace all 4 batteries together. When doing this, pay attention to the polarity and installation direction.

Notes about Working with Batteries

  • Batteries not designed for recharging may not be recharged.
  • Remove rechargeable batteries from the device before charging them.
  • Different types of batteries or new and used batteries may not be used together.
  • Remove run down batteries from the device.
  • Remove the batteries, if you are not going to use the device for a longer period of time.
  • Wear protective gloves when removing run down batteries. Then clean the battery pack and the contacts with a dry cloth.
  • Batteries should not be handled by children. Children could put the batteries in their mouths and swallow them. If a battery should be swallowed, seek medical help  immediately.
  • See „Before Using for the First Time“ and „Disposal“ about disposal of batteries.

  3. Enter the password for the WLAN.
-> select the desired letter with + the control knob
-> confirm the letter by pressing on the control knob
-> search for the next letter.

  4. When the connection is completely set up, the Mobile Station WLAN searches for a suitable Central Station and connects to it

  5. When the Mobile Station WLAN finds several Central Stations, it offers you a selection menu, which you can use to select the desired Central Station.

The settings that are found are stored in the Mobile Station WLAN. When both the selected WLAN and the selected Central Station are available when the Mobile Station WLAN is turned on, they do not have to be set up again.

Main Device and Expansion Device
When several locomotive controllers are connected at the same time to a model railroad, it is obligatory that one device be the main device. This means that all other devices are incorporated as expansion units.
Setup, recognition, and programming are done only through the main device. The expansion device takes on all locomotives from the main device. The assignment of main and expansion devices is done as follows.

(Lower serial number)
If the MS WLAN is operated in addition to several Central Stations, you can set under „MSW Settings
– Select Main Controller“ which of the connected
Central Stations is to be the main controller.

Operation

Important Note:
When the model railroad is in operation, it cannot determine whether the Mobile Station WLAN is always connected. If the connection breaks, or if the Mobile Station WLAN shuts off (for example due to run down batteries), the operation on the layout continues. The STOP button on the Mobile Station WLAN is then also not functional.

Power On
Turn the Mobile Station WLAN on by pressing on the STOP button (> 1 second).

Power Off
There are various ways to turn the Mobile Station WLAN off:
– Press the STOP button (> 8 seconds)
– Press the buttons (> 5 seconds)
– Press the buttons (> 5 seconds)

Idle Mode
After several minutes without being operated the Mobile Station WLAN goes to a dormant mode to preserve the batteries. It can be „woken up“ again by pressing a button. The time until the dormant mode ends can be set in the menu „MSW Settings – Preserving Power“.
The idle mode can be activated directly at any time by turning the Mobile Station WLAN upside down. The duration until this shutting off takes place can be set in the menu „MSW Settings – Shutoff Time“.

Configuration
When the Mobile Station WLAN is not connected to a WLAN, it provides a WLAN on its own. Using this WLAN, you can access the Mobile Station from a PC or a Smartphone.

Setting up a Locomotive
Locomotives must be set up in the Mobile Station
WLAN in order to be able to control them. Locomotives, which have been set up, are displayed in the locomotive list.
You can select among locomotives displayed in the locomotive list by using SHIFT + the control knob. Up to 40 locomotives can be set up in the locomotive list. Additional  locomotives overwrite the respective oldest one already set up.
There are several ways to set up locomotives. These are described as follows.

Registering an mfx Locomotive
Place the locomotive (with mfx decoder) on the track.
The locomotive registers itself on its own after a short time. The newly registered locomotive is displayed, added to the locomotive list, and it is immediately ready to run.

Recognizing a Locomotive
The Mobile Station WLAN can find a locomotive (fx (MM) or DCC) standing on the track and recognize it.
To do this, only this one locomotive may be standing on the track.
Also, mfx locomotives, which are not automatically registered, can be registered by recognizing the locomotive.
Searching for an open storage location:

If a locomotive has not been recognized several times, then check to make sure that there is clean contact between the locomotive and the track.

Setting up a Locomotive from the Database
The Mobile Station WLAN has a database from which a locomotive can be selected. The settings for the locomotive must then however be the same as when the locomotive came from the factory.

Setting up a Locomotive Manually
Locomotives not in the database can be set up manually. When doing this, various things must be specified, for example, the address. The various points are queried when setting up the locomotive.

Configuring or Removing a Locomotive
Various individual settings on the locomotive decoder or in the Mobile Station WLAN can be programmed in this menu. They are:

– Name
– Address
– Symbol (for display in the Mobile Station)
– Functions
– Maximum and minimum speed
– Acceleration (Acc) and braking delay (Dec)
– Volume and sound functions (Vol)
– Number of speed levels (only DCC)
– Programming individual CVs (only DCC)
– Removing a locomotive (from the locomotive list)
– Resetting a locomotive (resetting the decoder)

Not all settings are possible on each decoder. For example, on a decoder with coding switches the address can only be changed on the coding switches.
Please also note here the instructions for the locomotive or the decoder in question. During programming, the locomotive can still be controlled using the control knob so that the changed settings can be checked immediately.

Note: Only the locomotive in question can be standing on the track for programming of a locomotive decoder. Other locomotives must be removed.

Solenoid Items

Solenoid items can be switched in the Keyboard.
Solenoid items do not need to be set up. They can be switched immediately using the address.

Turning Protocols On/Off
The protocols for switching solenoid items are independent of the protocols for running a locomotive.

Switching Solenoid Items
320 addresses (MM or DCC) are displayed with standard symbols for solenoid items.
When the Mobile Station is connected to a Central Station, the solenoid items are displayed with the symbols used there (exceptions: turntable and color light signals. Color light signals are shown as semaphore signals, the turntable with the standard symbols for solenoid items).
The last locomotive called up will continue to be displayed on the lower edge of the display. You can

Web-Interface

When the Mobile Station WLAN is not connected to a router or the 60117 WLAN Box, you can access the Mobile Station from a PC (with WLAN) or a Smartphone.
Address: 192.168.1.1
or: msw.local

Several settings can be done on the device in the user interface shown in the browser. Among other things, a previously downloaded update for the Mobile Station WLAN can also be recorded here.
Even if the WLAN mobile station is connected to a router or a WLAN receiver box 60117, the web interface can be accessed. To do this, the current address must first be read in the WLAN settings of the WLAN mobile station under „Display WLAN“. The device used to access the web interface must be on the same network as the WLAN mobile station.
