On Stairs:
When using stairs, it is recommended to use a handrail for support. Hold
the crutch not in use in the other hand or give it to someone else. Use a
single crutch for support while holding onto the handrail. When ascending,
lead with the unaffected leg first, followed by the affected leg and the
crutch. When descending, place the crutch on the step below, then move the
affected leg onto that step, and finally bring the unaffected leg onto the
same step.
Sitting:
To sit down, maneuver yourself to a position where you can feel the chair
or bed behind your legs. Place the crutches in the ‘H’ position for stability.
Reach behind and feel for the chair handle or mattress while maintaining
balance with the crutches in the other hand. Slowly and controlled, lower
yourself into a seating position.
Standing:
To stand up, place the crutches in the ‘H’ position and place a hand over
the handles for stability. Lean forward while pushing on the chair handle or

place each hand through the cuffs of the crutches and hold the handles facing
forwards.
