LP SV-1200 Commercial Electric Reel

Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for purchasing the finest electric reel available. Please read this instruction manual in its entirety before operating the reel. The LP Electric Fishing Reel is an investment that, if taken care of, should provide many years of fishing enjoyment. Additional information is available on our website, www.lindgren-pitman.com, along with accessories and other LP products. You can also check our Facebook and Instagram pages for updates.

GENERIC INFORMATION

Mounting:
All S-1200 models weigh approximately 20 pounds with an empty spool. Please take into account the load requirements that your rod holders can handle. We recommend, at the very minimum, your existing rod holders be reinforced accordingly. As with any reel, be sure it is tethered to the boat in case it breaks free from the rod holder. A hole is provided in base clamos to facilitate this.

The reels are supplied with LP reel base clamps shown above (the rod and rod butt are shown for illustration purpose only and are not included) with either 80 (1.343″ diameter) or 130 (1.565″ diameter) rod butt clamps to be specified at the time of purchase. First, install the two clamps to the reel with the supplied M8 Allen screws (do not tighten) using a 6 millimeter wrench. Next, slide the rod butt through the clamps and tighten the larger M8 screws with a 6 millimeter to a torque of 35-foot pounds. Finally, adjust the butt so the mark on the rod clamp aligns with the center of the reel hood on the butt. Once aligned, tighten the M6 5-millimeter Allen clamp screws to a torque of 15-foot pounds. Note: the rod clamp that has the hole for securing a line tether is to be mounted towards the bottom of the rod butt.

Threading the Levelwind:
The levelwind needs to be threaded between the two carbide rods in the manner shown below. This is done by opening the stainless top and inserting the line between the two rods, then closing the top. The levelwinder is appropriate for all line types- including wire line. Proper threading is shown in the photo below.

Loading the Spool:
Typically, the line of choice will be preloaded by the retailer. If not already done, it can be easily accomplished with a 12- volt battery or on the vessel it is to be used on. WARNING: never use a battery charger alone to run the $2-1200,

SV-1200, and SV-2400 as the power is not clean and it can damage the circuitry and void your warranty.
Because of the materials used, the nylon or titanium spools do not require backing. When loading the spool, it is necessary to use the levelwinder to establish the correct track for the line. Failure to establish the correct wrap with the levelwind can damage both the levelwind and the line. Press and hold the BLACK and rightmost RED button together for 5 seconds for the automatic spooling override. Do not put more than 3500 yards of braided line on the spool. Once it has been fully loaded the levelwinder will always follow the same track keeping the line perfectly wrapped.

Adjusting the Levelwinder Position:
If for any reason a spool is changed the same spool loading procedure must be followed. When the spool is mounted make sure the position of the levelwinder matches the location of the line on the spool. If the line is not aligned, simply pull down on the knob located under the levelwinder and slide it to the correct position. Pay special attention during the first drop, to be sure the line and the winder stay in-sync.

The levelwinder can be removed by pulling down on the knurled knob and sliding it off the Delrin levelwinder bar. It is also critical that the rod being used is designed with the reel in mind- namely the placement of the first guide. Most dealers are custom rod builders who understand this design criteria. If the first guide is too close to the levelwinder, the levelwinder becomes “choked” due to the pressure and can be damaged. ‘To ensure this doesn’t happen we recommend the first guide be placed no closer than 20″ (straight line) from the levelwinder.

General Wiring Considerations:
Lindgren-Pitman strongly encourages users to hard-wire their boat as robustly as possible to ensure problem-free operation of their reels. We also recommend each reel be wired independently to its own breaker with unique (not shared/ piggybacked) wiring.

CONTROL PANNEL BUTTONS

Reset Button:
This button zeros the counter. The “stop at zero” feature uses this as the reference point to turn the reel off. Press and hold the BLACK button for 5 seconds to re-establish the zero point. Remember that if you wind past the zero point, the counter is counting negative numbers, just not displaying them. Your zero point will remain the same. The reel will also not enter “AUTO” mode when the counter is displaying 0000. To automatically wind with the counter displaying 0000, press and hold the BLACK and rightmost RED button together for 5 seconds. WARNING: Never push the reset button without first setting the rig at least 10 feet below the top of the rod. Failure to do this could cause the fishing rig to retrieve past the tip and the possible loss of gear and fish.

Manual Retrieve Buttons:

  • Pushing either one of the “MAN” buttons turns the reel on as long as the button is held down. Once the button is released the spool stops. This is used to advance the reel manually.
  • This is especially useful after using the “stop at zero” feature to slowly bring the gear to the boat. It can also be used to retrieve the rig if the “stop at zero” feature is not used, or the reset button is accidentally pushed.

Stop at Zero/AUTO:
This is activated by pushing both of the “MAN” buttons together for at least two seconds. This is one of the handiest features of the reel as it makes for truly “hands free” retrieval. WARNING: Once the “AUTO” feature is activated it runs the reel until the counter hits 0000. IMPORTANT: If at any point the reel needs to be stopped push either of the red “MAN” buttons. The “AUTO” can be continued by pushing both “man” buttons again at the same time for two seconds and the reel will continue to 0000.

Hi-Low 2-Speed Button (S2-1200 only): The S2-1200 can operate in two speed settings, hi and low. This is done by pushing the hi-low button (blue button) while the reel is running. Typically the reel will spend the majority of the time in high speed. The low speed is used under heavy loads as it cuts the current draw and makes for less slipping of the drag. It is also useful as the counter approaches zero to slow the gear down.

Speed Dial (SV-1200 & SV-2400 only): On both the SV-1200 and SV-2400 the speed is adiusted using the speed dial on the faceplate of the console. This allows the user to infinitely control the speed of retrieval as desired. Slowing the speed down helps to avoid constant drag slipping and prevent the buildup of heat which can damage the drag system. It also allows for more consistent and smooth pressure on the fish.

Strike Alarm (SV-1200 & SV-2400 only): SV-1200 and SV-2400 reels are equipped with a digital beeper (clicker) mounted on the underside of the console. It is engaged by tapping the black “RESET” button. It will beep 2x when “engaged” and Ix when “off’. When “engaged” it will beep Ix when the counter increases by 1 number but does not beep when the reel is gaining line (counter decreasing). Volume of the beeper is set by moving the plastic baffle on the speaker. Although the beeper is completely waterproof, it is good practice to keep the baffle closed when not using the beeper function to prevent salt buildup.

General Use:
Once the wiring has been routed and the reel is mounted the reel is ready for use. As with any other instrument a little practice will make its use second nature. Plug the cord into the receptacle and the backlight will illuminate the display reading 0000. Begin by releasing the drag and pulling the lever towards you, “free spooling” the line about 20 feet. Push the reset button to set the counter to zero. The counter only counts the number of revolutions of the spool and is an approximate measurement of feet. The actual payout varies by the amount and diameter of line on the spool and the stretch of the type of line being used. Therefore, you should always “free spool” some line prior to setting the counter to allow for a margin of safety when using the auto retrieve.

Once the counter has been reset, release the drag again and notice the counter numbers increasing as the line leaves the spool. While free spooling, adjust the drag so it pays out at a nice even speed. This is the first stage of the 2-stage drag system incorporated into the reel. It offers a very light drag for the first travel of the drag lever. When you notice there is no more tension on the line adjust the drag allowing for the line to continue traveling on the ocean floor. Look for short movements on the rod indicating fish are on. Once you have decided to retrieve the rig press both red buttons marked “man” for manual and hold them down together for at least two seconds. The reel will begin to retrieve the line until the counter reaches 0000. Once this happens the reel shuts off. To get your rig to the top of the pole press either of the “man” buttons which manually retrieves the line as long as the button is pushed. Once the rig is to the top of the rod the same procedure can be repeated over and over again.

Changing the Spools
As already mentioned, the cantilever spool design makes line changes easy. Optional spare spools can be purchased to hold back-up or alternate line sizes and types. To remove the spool, loosen and remove the large plastic thumb nut on the inside of the spool and remove. Note that the spools have 2 different size endplates, the smaller of which goes towards the reel, allowing it to seat on the shaft and the two alignment pins. Remember, when changing spools, it is imperative to ensure that the levelwinder is synchronized with the line wrap on the new spool by aligning it using the pull-down knob on the bottom of the levelwinder. Failure to do this can result in damage to the levelwinder and the line.

Maintenance

Treat your electric reel the same as you would of any other high quality marine electronic component. While the reel is completely sealed, care should be taken to minimize its exposure to the saltwater environment. If possible, remove the reel from the rod holder when not in use. Make sure the reel is unplugged when not in use, avoid leaving reel plugged in when switching from generator to shore power, and for extended time while at the dock.

Always rinse the reel with fresh water and thoroughly dry after use. The case is made from aluminum and is hard anodized to prevent corrosion, it does not require any special care beyond that noted. The nylon and titanium spools will not react with any type of line used and require no maintenance. The display bezel is glass and is very durable but be careful not to place any weight on the glass or let anything hit it as it could shatter. It is good practice to periodically spray the plug with Corrosion Block inside and OUTS

NEVER use abrasive cleaners on your electric reel, just soap and fresh water. Before any outing test the reel prior departure to be sure all features are functioning correctly. Every season the reel should be thoroughly inspected for any damage or corrosion. Inspect the cord for any cuts and inspect all electrical terminals, as they should be free of corrosion. Change connectors as needed.

Error Codes:
All Lindgren-Pitman S2-1200, SV-1200, and SV-2400 reels have 2 error codes that allow for troubleshooting potential issues.

Error Code 1: Flashing all digits with a colon between the two middle digits “XX: XX” (flashing)
This means that supply voltage has become too low (or is incorrect). This could be due to several factors such as high pull, inadequate wiring, corrosion, wrong voltage (ie. Plugging a 12V reel into 24V outlet), or a dead battery.

Error Code 2: Flashing all digits with decimals between all digits “Y .X.X.X.’ (flashing) This means the reel has entered a locked rotor condition- this typically occurs at the highest drag setting when the current limit has been reached (~45A). Once the load is relieved slightly, the reel will resume winding

Service and Storage

Should you notice any loss in performance or have any problems operating your electric reel it should be returned to Lindgren-Pitman, Inc for evaluation. There are no parts inside the reel that can be serviced except by factory technicians. All parts are fit to exacting tolerances and any attempt made to open either the case or display will void the warranty unless authorized by a Lindgren-Pitman official over the phone. If for any reason any of the bolts need retightening, all hardware is metric. There is no routine service interval for LP electric reels, and provided they are properly operated and maintained, they should provide many years of fishing enjoyment before needing service. Should you need service, visit our website and fill out our request for service form and include it with the reel before you ship it in.
