Product Information
FORD 6R140 Transmission
The FORD 6R140 Transmission is a transmission system designed for use in Ford vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2019. It requires specific diagnostic and flashing tools for installation. The transmission installation process requires a Ford IDS scan and flash tool, which is necessary to complete the installation successfully. The 6R140 transmission requires certain diagnostic and flashing tools in order to be installed. Currently in order to install this transmission you must have a Ford IDS scan and flash tool. Without this tool you will not be able to complete the installation. Do not begin installing this transmission unless you have a Ford IDS in your possession. Our transmission requires FORD FACTORY TCM files for tuning. We do not allow ANY aftermarket transmission tuning to be ran with our transmission. Failure to install these factory files via the IDS will cause erratic shifting and likely transmission failure! DO NOT use a tuner provided “Return to stock” TCM file as this is NOT the file your truck was designed to work with from the factory but rather a random file from a random truck that is NOT calibrated for your vehicle! Always use the IDS to reflash Ford Factory TCM tuning after any engine file reflashes! After installing the new transmission, you will need to connect your IDS and flash in the correct solenoid strategy code . Here are the steps:
Product Usage Instructions
Part 1: Flashing New Solenoid Strategy Code
- Using your aftermarket programmer, return the truck back to stock programming.
- Connect the IDS and Start New Session.
- Select “All other” from the options.
- Select “Powertrain.”
- Select “Transmission.”
- Select “Transmission Characterization.”
- Type in the provided solenoid strategy provided on the photo sent with your new transmission.
If you plan to change your engine tuning (reflashing a new program or file), you should do so before proceeding to the next step. The flashing of the TCM (Transmission Control Module) must be the last process you perform.
Part 2: Flashing TCM back to Ford Factory specifications
Connect your IDS back up to the vehicle and RESTORE the session you started when you flashed in the new solenoid strategy.
- Select “Module Programming.”
- Select “Programmable Module Installation.”
- Select “TCM.”
- Follow the steps to program the TCM.
- Once the programming is successful, you will receive a message verifying that the TCM has been overwritten with a Ford file, and you can now proceed with the drive learn cycle.
You may now begin to break in and drive learn the transmission . This is accomplished by completing the following steps:
- Using 25% throttle accelerate from a stop up to 6th gear and then allow the vehicle to come to a slow stop. Do this 10x
- Using 50% throttle accelerate from a stop up to 6th gear and then allow the vehicle to come to a slow stop. Do this 5x
Transmission Drive Learn Cycle
To break in and drive learn the transmission, follow these steps:
- Using 25% throttle, accelerate from a stop up to 6th gear and then allow the vehicle to come to a slow stop. Repeat this process 10 times.
- Using 50% throttle, accelerate from a stop up to 6th gear and then allow the vehicle to come to a slow stop. Repeat this process 5 times.
Do not exceed 50% throttle until the next step below has been accomplished.
It will take 5 days with overnight cool downs before the relearn process is complete. During this time, you may experience a slip flare in the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts in the morning when the transmission is cold. Once these shift issues are resolved, you can exceed 50% throttle. It may require some mid and heavy throttle runs after the initial break-in process for the transmission to learn higher throttle positions correctly, which is considered normal.
IMPORTANT: Whenever you update your engine tuning by reflashing any file via a programmer, it is crucial to reflash the TCM with an IDS scan tool afterward and then complete the drive learn process again. Failure to do so may result in erratic shifting and possible catastrophic transmission damage. Anytime you update your engine tuning (reflash any file via a programmer) you MUST then reflash the TCM with a IDS scan tool afterwards and then recomplete the drive learn process. Failure to do so will cause errat-ic shifting, and possible catastrophic transmission damage!
The steps for this procedure are:
- Using your aftermarket programmer, return the truck back to stock programming
- Connect the IDS and Start New Session
- Once the New Session has started, save the session and exit out of the IDS.
- Install your new engine file via your programmer.
- Do the steps previously outlined in Part 2. above for flashing TCM back to Ford Factory specifications
You may now begin to break in and drive learn the transmission.
Do this 5x
