Important safety information
WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, read all important precautions and instructions in this manual and all warnings on your indoor cycling bike before using your indoor cycling bike. Stages Cycling assumes no responsibility for personal injury or property damage sustained by or through the use of this product.
- Before beginning any exercise program, consult your physician. This is especially important for persons over age 35 or persons with pre-existing health problems.
- Use the Stages Bike only as described in this manual.
- It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that all users of the Stages Bike are adequately informed of all precautions.
- WARNING: Heart rate monitoring systems may be inaccurate. Over exercising may result in serious injury or death. If you feel faint stop exercising immediately.
- Keep the Stages Bike indoors, away from moisture and dust. Do not put the Stages Bike in a garage or covered patio, or near water.
- Place the Stages Bike on a level surface, with a mat beneath it to protect the floor or carpet. Make sure that there is at least 23.6 in (60 cm) of clearance around the bike.
- Inspect and properly tighten all parts regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately.
- Keep children under age 12 and pets away from the Stages Bike at all times.
- Wear appropriate clothes while exercising; do not wear loose clothes that could become caught on the bike. Always wear athletic shoes for foot protection.

If you suspect the battery has been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention.
- Regularly examine devices and make sure the battery compartment is correctly secured, e.g. that the screw or other mechanical fastener is tightened. Do not use if compartment is not secure.
- Dispose of used button batteries immediately and safely out of the reach of children. A battery can still be dangerous even when it can no longer operate the device.
Selecting a crank length
Crank length can be chosen by rider preference, matching the length to an existing bike, or estimated based on rider height. The chart below can be used as a reference guide to select a crank length, if you do not have an existing preference.
Length | Height |
---|---|
165 mm | Up to 5’6” / 168 cm |
170 mm | 5’6-5’9 / 168-176 cm |
172.5 mm | 5’9-6’ / 176-183 cm |
175 mm | 6’ / 183 cm and up |
Crank length is selected on the bike by installing your own pedal into the corresponding pedal threads for your chosen crank length. Reference the labels on each crank arm to determine which set of pedal threads corresponds to each crank length.
The crank length can be updated at any point by removing the pedals and reinstalling them into a different length, then updating the configuration setting in the Stages Cycling app.
PEDAL DISCLAIMER: The Stages Bike does not come supplied with pedals. Please review the following warnings when installing and using your own pedals. Stages Cycling assumes no risk or warranty related to pedal malfunction or improper installation methods.
- Inspect pedals and cleats for damage or wear regularly to ensure safety while operating the bike.
- Apply grease to the pedal threads before installing, and if required by the pedal manufacturer, use pedal washers. Pedal extenders are not recommended.
- Follow installation instructions carefully, as the left pedal is reverse threaded. Do not force pedal threads, as irreparable damage may occur to the crank arm.
- Check pedal manufacturer’s instructions for correct torque specification.
Configuring the bike
Before you can begin riding the Stages Bike, you must first install the Stages Cycling app to connect to and configure the bike.
Stages Cycling app
If you do not yet have the Stages Cycling app installed on your mobile device, please download and install it now. The app is a crucial requirement for bike configuration, including firmware updates and necessary bike settings. If you do not yet have a Stages Cycling account, create one now within the app.
Pre-configuration check list
Once you have the app installed, check these three things before moving on towards configuring your bike:
- Make sure the Stages Bike has power and all wiring connections are plugged in. See step #11 of the assembly instructions to confirm bike has power by testing the brake function.
- Make sure the battery tabs are removed from both power meters.
- Spin the cranks to wake up the power meters.
Next, navigate to the Sensors page of the Stages Cycling app. The app will walk you through setting up the bike:
- Tap on StagesBike SB20 to connect your bike, then select your bike from the list.
- Once it connects, press Continue; the Stages Cycling app will update and verify the firmware. Press Done.
- Tap on the Power meters tab to configure your crank length.
- Tap on Setups to configure your virtual setups.
What’s next
Now that you’ve completed assembly and set up, your Stages Bike is ready to set up bike fit, connect to devices, and more. Our online StagesBike SB20 user guide and video tutorials will guide you through the next steps.
