Frequently Asked Questions
Can this detect when another cyclist is about to overtake you, or can it only detect cars?
Yes it can detect cyclists approaching from behind. Sometimes confusing but it is very helpful as regards approaching cars. It will even show graphically how many cars are approaching. If in a paceline and someone pulls in behind you it will beep as if noting a car and then it will resolve itself pretty quickly. It is a necessity and I don't ride without it now.
Do I have to buy a mounting hardware separately? Will it be safe from theft?
I bought the Varia RTL515 at a local bike shop and it did not come with any mounting hardware. I will have to order a mount on Amazon. It looks like the units sold on Amazon come with a seat-post mount.
Has anyone come up with a way to mount this to a bike rack? I have a Bonrager rack if that matters.
I have a Bontrager rack and mounted the unit on a plastic tube that I then attached to the rack with zip ties. Unfortunately this out the unit too far away from the Garmin computer, so sometimes, when the battery was low it would stop working consistently.
How do you use it if you don't have a smart phone or computer pairing device?
Is it compatible with the igpsport igs630?
I am not familiar with the device you are referring to, but if it has ANT+ or Bluetooth technology then the radar should be able to connect to it.
Does it pair with iphone 11 and garmin 735xt?
Should pair with the iPhone with no issues. I would suspect with the watch but no idea what it would display.
Will it pair with garmin rdu?
The device is made by Garmin so I would imagine that it works best with Garmin devices. It works well with my Wahoo Element Bolt.
Can you enable the light only without enabling radar?
According to the manual, no. You also can’t enable the radar without one of the light modes enabled.
Does it work with a edge 25?
I have an Edge 130 Plus and it works well with this device.
On the Garmin 830 do you need to be in Navigation mode for the Varia to work?
The 830 will display an icon for the radar(connected/disconnected) and the traffic will always show up on the right side of any screen you're on. No map screen is required.
