Instructions

Preparation:

  • Raise vehicle
  • Remove the under shield
  • Remove engine top cover
  • Remove cam cover
  • Remove sump
  • Ensure the engine is positioned at TDC No. 1 cylinder

Item A: Specifically designed to fit the BMW N51/ N52/ and N55/S55 engines; it is designed to be used to lock both camshafts in their timed positions as shown in Fig. 1. Ensure the engine is at TDC with Item E in place.

Item B: The VANOS sensor alignment tool is double-sided with clear markings to distinguish between engine applications. When fitting, ensure that the two locating pins enter into the holes in the VANOS units (refer to Fig. 2).

Item C: Fitted and used in the same way as Item A but is specific to the N53 and N54 engines.
Item D: Designed to pre-tension the timing chain tensioner.
Item E: This tool is used to lock the flywheel in position and thereby lock the crankshaft in the TDC No. 1 cylinder position (refer to Fig. 3).

Safety Warnings – please read

  • If the engine has been identified as an Interference engine, damage to the engine will occur if the timing belt has been damaged. A compression check of all the cylinders should be taken before the cylinder head (s) are removed.
  • Do not turn the crankshaft or camshaft when the timing belt/chain has been removed.
  • To make turning the engine easier, remove the spark plugs/glow plugs or injectors.
  • Observe all tightening torques.
  • Do not turn the engine using the camshaft or any other sprocket.
  • Disconnect the battery earth lead (check Radio code is available).
  • Do not use cleaning fluids on belts, sprockets, or rollers.
  • Some toothed timing belts are not interchangeable. Check the replacement belt has the correct tooth profile.
  • Always mark the belt with the direction of running before removal.
  • Do not lever or force the belt onto its sprockets.
  • Do not use timing pins to lock the engine when slackening or tightening the crankshaft pulley bolts.
  • ALWAYS REFER TO A REPUTABLE MANUFACTURER’S WORKSHOP MANUAL.
