Yes, it works well on my Macbook. I have HDMI and Ethernet-to-USB both plugged in and working without any external power. The Macbook is supplying power just fine to those.
Will it work with a Samsung a01?
Not sure. I know it does with all Galaxy's. If you have Smart View on the a01 or Samsung Dex in your settings then yes I'm sure it will.
