  • Midi socket drill guide
  • 2x M3 bolt, 2xM3 nut for midi socket
  • 2x 10k resistor for Filter control

Principle of operation

Organ Donor uses analog switches to simulate keyboard presses directly. Normally this would require to solder two wires for each key. Luckily this can often be avoided by grouping common signals. Organ Donor features solder jumpers to connect common signals on the back of each analog switch board. We already connect these jumpers for you.

The PE-1000 has 60 keys. The keyboard is constructed from 10  key blocks. The first key block consists of 7 key contacts and 1 common contact, the other keyblocks consist of 6 key contacts and 1 common contact each. The sixth key contact of the last key block is not used.
The keyboard uses 2 common contact busses, 1 for the lower keyboard part (25 keys) and 1 for the upper keyboard part (35 keys). On the keyboard itself the common contacts are connected via jumper wires.

Installation

First place the main board and the 4 switch boards inside the Synthes case, see picture.
The main board gets placed to the left of the filter board, the 4 switchboards to the bottom of the case.
Use the 2,9×6,5 screws for this.
Then connect the main board and the switch boards with the interconnection wires.

Power connection

You need to extend the supplied wire assembly for the power connection.
Connect V+ (red wire) to the point marked with a green circle in the picture.
Connect Gnd and V- black and yellow wires) to the points marked with a red square in the picture.

Installing the key connections

Cut the ribbon cables to length and strip the wires.
Switch board 1:
The first wire of the 20 wire ribbon cable gets soldered to the common contact of the first keyblock.
Wire 2 gets cut.
Wires 3-18 get soldered to the first 16 key contacts. Be careful not to desolder the internal wires.
Wires 19 and 20 get cut.

Solder the common wire to the contact marked green in the picture. This is the first common contact in the first keyblock, a blue wire connects it to the other common contacts. The common contacts are squeezed between the normal key contact, so they are recognized easily.
Switch board 2:
Wires 1 and 2 get cut.
Wires 3–18 get soldered to key contacts 17–32.
Wire 19 gets cut.
Wire 20 gets soldered to the common contact of keyblock 5

Solder the common wire to the contact marked green in the picture. This is the first common contact in the fifth keyblock, a green wire connects it to the other common contacts.
Switch board 3: Wires 1-16 get soldered to key contacts 33- 48.
Switch board 4: Wires 1-12 get soldered to key contacts 49-60.

Installing the midi socket
You can either drill a hole in the back of the PE-1000 and install a Midi socket, or you can remove the Traveller Control jack, but leave all the connections intact. Put the jack in a plastic bag and secure it inside the synth. Now just install the MIDI jack where the Traveller Control jack was located. In this case you don’t need to drill a hole and can easily restore the synth to its original state. The MIDI jack connects to the main board, you need to extend the wires.

Installing the learn button

The optional learn button can be used to set midi channel. It needs to be connected to the IO “2” and “G” pin on the main board. (The back of the main board has labels on it). Wires are not included in the kit. Press the learn button and while it is pressed send a midi note on any midi channel. Organ Donor will use this midi channel from now. These settings are saved.

For Glide Control solder a wire to the OC1 (OC=open Collector) pad on the main board.
Solder this wire to the place marked in green in the picture (solder to purple wire). MIDI CC23 turns Glide on and off.

For Filter Control solder 2 10K resistors to OC3 and OC4 pads on the main board. Solder two wires to these resistors. Solder these wires tothe wipers of the filter slide pots. OC3 HPF, yellow wire, OC4 LPF, grey wire. Solder 100nF ceramic caps between the wipers and ground.

Solder a 10K resistor to the pad marked in green for HPF control. MIDI CC25 controls the HPF.

Configuration

We already flashed the corresponding configuration file to Organ Donor. There is, however, a software configuration tool available, in case you want to play around with settings and key assignments. You`ll find the configurator here:
https://tubbutec.de/files/organDonor/
tubbutecOrganDonorConfigurator.html
This is a browser application, it works with Chrome and Safari right away, Firefox needs to be configured for web MIDI.
The configurator allows you to upload your settings directly from your browser to Organ Donor, safe and load settings and export settings as SysEx files for uploading to Organ Donor via another SysEx tool.
