INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on the purchase of the Rebel cell 12V80 PRO lithium battery. The 12V80 PRO is a powerful battery specially developed as an “all in one” battery: both for  starting an outboard engine and / or as power supply for (multiple) depth sounders and / or trolling motor. It is a ‘drop in’ replacement for a start / service lead battery and  can be charged via the outboard engine.
The 12V80 PRO is well suited for deployment in cold weather: the Frost Control function allows you to charge even in sub-zero temperatures. And with the convenient  Rebel cell app, you can monitor charging status, temperature and battery health, among other things, for a worry-free day on the water.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

Your Rebel cell 12V80 PRO battery (hereafter battery) has been engineered with a safe and long user life in mind. Please thoroughly review this manual and follow the safety  precautions. Not doing so may invalidate the warranty and result in the malfunctioning of your battery.

  • Use cables of sufficient thickness to connect your equipment to the battery for safe use. Never use crocodile clamps to connect your equipment to the battery! These  connections are not safe and can result in heat development with damage to your equipment or battery.

  • If you use your battery to power equipment (e.g. depth sounders or trolling motor) use a suitable fuse between the battery and your equipment to protect both.

  • Avoid direct contact of your hands with both battery terminals: danger of electric shock!

  • Avoid reversing the + and – battery terminals when connecting the battery. This can lead to irreversible damage to your battery!

  • Only use isolated tools when installing your battery. And keep metal objects, such as jewelry, away from the battery.

  • Your battery is ‘Waterproof according to the IP65 standard. To avoid issues, we recommend placing the battery in a waterproof battery container and/or on a elevation  to ensure that the battery is never partly or fully in the water on the bottom of your boat.

  • Fix your battery (e.g. with fixation bands) on a vibration free surface to ensure that sliding is impossible.

  • When used outside the permitted standards (e.g. high load) your battery will automatically turn off. No power will be available until the battery can operate within these  standards.

  • Avoid damaging the battery by dropping it. In case of external damage do not use your battery but have Rebel cell check for proper and safe operation.

  • Place the battery in the coolest environment possible. Do not expose the battery to sources of direct heat such as (open) fire, heating or exposure to direct sunlight for  extended periods of time. Long-term use in high temperatures (> 40 ° C) has a negative influence on service life. At a temperature of 55 ° C, the battery will shut itself  down until a normal operating temperature is reached.

  • The battery is classified as dangerous goods for transportation purposes (ADR Class 9).
Review the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on our website for more information.

  • Your battery may only be opened by Rebel cell for repairs. If you open the battery the warranty will be void.

INSTALLATION

  • Your battery is equipped with screw battery terminals in size M8. Remove the protective caps on the battery terminals before use and fully charge the battery with a  suitable battery charger (the battery is not fully charged yet due to transport and storage requirements).
  • Connect your outboard / depth sounder / trolling engine cables (with M8 tongue connectors) to the battery terminals and securely tighten the bolts with a socket  wrench: improperly fixed terminals can be dangerous and generate heat, which can lead to irreversible damage to your equipment or battery! If you use your battery to  power equipment (e.g. depth sounders or trolling motor) use a suitable fuse between the battery and your equipment to protect both.

GUIDELINES FOR USE

Your battery has been specially developed as an “all in one” battery: both for starting an outboard engine and / or as power supply for (multiple) depth sounders and / or trolling motor. The 12V80 PRO is a ‘drop in’ replacement for a start / service lead battery and can be charged via the outboard engine.

Starter battery for your outboard
The 12V80 PRO can deliver a starter pulse current of 450A (5s at -12 °C) to 900A (5s at 15 °C). Thanks to the high starter current (also at cold temperatures), frost control function (allowing charging up to -20 °C) and low self-discharge (< 3% per month) the 12V80 PRO is the ideal starter battery for petrol outboards up to 350 HP in all weather conditions. This versatile powerhouse is well suited for deployment in cold weather: the Frost Control feature allows you to charge even in sub-zero temperatures.

Power source for (multiple) depth sounders
The 12V80 PRO can be used with all brands and types of depth sounders without restrictions (no DC stabilizer needed for sounders). Thanks to the high capacity and onboard charging via your outboard it is very suitable to power multiple large screen sounders simultaneously.

Electric trolling engine
The battery can handle a continuous load of 100A making it suitable for use with all 12V trolling engines. As the battery voltage remains nearly constant until the battery is almost empty, you will notice that thrust remains high and constant. If you to use your trolling engine in a lower gear this can significantly increase your runtime.

Discharging
Fully discharging your battery is not harmful. The battery is protected by an advanced integrated Battery Management System). Charge the battery as soon as possible after a full discharge. If the battery is not used for a longer period of time disconnect all wires from the battery to prevent unintended discharge. Due to low self-discharge (~ 3% per month) voltage may drop below critical levels and damage the battery irreversibly.

CHARGING

Via your outboard
After you start your outboard the battery is recharged via the outboard alternator. The voltage regulator in your alternator will charge the battery with the suitable charge current and voltage (normal output voltage ~14.4V). The charge current is automatically reduced as the battery is nearly charged and will stop charging when battery is full. If the regulator does not function properly your battery can be damaged. Any damages due to a malfunction of the voltage regulator will void the warranty.

Via the battery charger
If you do not use your outboard regularly the alternator will not fully charge your battery. In that case use the Rebelcell 14.6V20A battery charger or other suitable charger for 12V LiFePO4 batteries to top up your battery. Read the warnings on the battery charger before use and follow the instructions. Make sure the charger power cord is disconnected from the AC outlet and the power switch (if applicable) is off. Connect the charger to the (+) and (-) terminals of the battery and ensure you tighten them with a socket wrench. The power cord in the AC-outlet and turn the power switch (if applicable) to ‘on’ to start charging. The charger LEDs indicate the charging status andthe battery bolts will automatically stop when the battery is fully charged. Unplug the power cord before disconnecting the charging cables from the battery. If you use a unsuitable charger the warranty is void if damage occurs to your battery.

Frost-control: safe charging during subzero temperatures
Irreversible damage can occur if you try to charge your battery when cell temperature is below 0 °C! The frost control function is activated automatically by the BMS if cell  temperature is below 0 °C and a charge current (from alternator or charger) is available. The BMS uses the charge current to preheat the cells and increase temperature and  will automatically start charging the cells if temperatures are sufficient. This makes the 12V80 PRO ideally suited for use in cold weather markets.

Storage
When the battery is not in use for extended periods of time charge it to 50% and disconnect all cables from equipment and store the battery in a dry location (above 0 °C).  Due to low self-discharge (~ 3% per month) voltage may drop below critical levels and damage the battery irreversibly. Check charge status at least 1x per 3 months and charge when needed.

Rebel cell Bluetooth App
The Rebel cell Bluetooth (BT) app is available for both Android and iOS (Apple). The app provides the ability to view battery capacity, battery status, charge and discharge  currents and the number of charge cycles, among other things. Please review the Rebelcell BT app section later in this manual.

BMS and safety
The BMS protects your battery and contributes to a long service life. Functions of the BMS are protection against deep discharge, overcharge, high temperature, frost control, short circuit, high currents and cell balancing. When certain safety thresholds are exceeded, the battery will shut down as a precaution and turn itself back on when the battery operates within specification. If this does not happen automatically you need to disconnect your equipment (and in some cases connect to your charger) to reset the battery. After a few minutes you can reconnect your equipment. The activation of the BMS may seem like a failure, but it is not. If it occurs repeatedly this can indicate a malfunction of a component in your electrical system or overheating of the battery. If this happens contact your electrician to check your electrical system.

Warranty
Your battery has a standard 3-year warranty from date of purchase. Refer to our general terms and conditions for detailed warranty conditions. Please retain and store your  purchase receipt, as it is required for warranty claims.

  • By swiping or tapping the other 2 icons you will move to the next screen.
  • The middle screen shows detailed information: number of charging cycles, temperature, and in/output currents.
  • The last screen contains a login page, intended for possible failure analysis.

TROUBLESHOOTING FOR REBELCELL APP

  • What to do if the connection to the battery is lost?
This can occur when you have not opened the App. To save energy, the App disconnects from the battery after some time.
Also, if you are out of range of the battery, it will disconnect.
Often the App will reconnect when you reopen the App. You can also reconnect to the battery using the Bluetooth icon in the top right of the screen.

  •  When I use my Android device no batteries appear in the app?
When installing the Rebel cell App on an Android device, you will be asked to grant permission for location access. You must allow this feature or the App will not function properly.
Also location (gaps) must be turned on when using the App on an Android device.

  • My battery is visible on the app but I cannot connect to the Rebel cell PRO battery?

Close the Rebel cell App completely and restart it. You can do this as follows:

Apple: Double-click the home button or (from iPhone 11 and up) swipe up slowly from the  bottom of the screen and stop halfway down the screen. Then swipe the  preview of the  Rebel cell App up to close it completely.

Android: Click the Overview button so all active Apps are visible and swipe the Rebel cell App  upoffthescreen.

  • I am trying to connect to another device but this is not working?

The app can only be connected to 1 device simultaneously. First close the connection and/or   ‘kill’ the app before you connect to another device.

CAUTION!
When you install the Rebel cell App on an Android device you will be asked to grant permission for location access. You need to allow this or the App will not function correctly!
