  • Current installed X2 image version is displayed in the lower left corner on the screen. If the latest version is not installed it is recommended install it, for installation instructions see the X2/Box2 image manual, see chapter “About this Startup document”.
  • Current installed Nexto CPU firmware version is displayed when entering the Nexto CPU IP address in a web browser. If the latest version is not installed it is recommended to install it, login with admin/admin (see tab CPU Management in picture below) and follow the instructions.
  • Web browser showing Firmware Version for a NX3010
  • To be able to upgrade firmware the CPU has to be in STOP mode, this can be done as follows.
  • Xpress, put a textfile named dontbootapp.txt on a USB stick, attach USB to the Xpress and reboot (power off/on)
  • Nexto modular, reboot (power off/on) and hold down the button (at power on) on top of thr CPU until the CPU display is showing “APP. NOT LOADED”

Assigning an IP address

  • The Nexo PLCs come with default IP setting as shown in tables below. Further information regarding IP settings can be found in each Nexto CPU manual and can be downloaded from HelpOnline, see chapter “About this Startup document”.Beijer-ELECTRONICS-SUEN00414-HMI-Terminal-with-Touch-Screen-FIG-22
  • If IP address of CPU is unknown it can be found using function Online -> Easy Connection in BCS Tools. This command performs a MAC level communication with the Nexto CPU, which also makes it possible to change the CPU IP address even if the programming computer and CPU is located on different subnets. By pressing button “Identify device” the chosen CPU can be identified either on the display (Nexto modular) or with the DG LED blinking (Nexto Xpress). Screen-FIG-20

Note that when the communication is established between the OPC UA Client and the OPC UA Server (Nexto CPU) there is some transactions done to optimize communication between these two. Depending of the number of tags it can take up to a few minutes to establish the connection.

Testing communication between X2 and Nexto

By adding one of the imported tags into an object (for example into an Analog Numeric), and adding the object to a screen, when pressing Run, the iX Developer project will be simulated. If no error messages appear and the values seems to be Ok, the communication is Ok. If an error appears, the first thing to read is the driver help file, that can be accessed from Tags -> Controllers -> Settings -> Hjälp.

To maximize X2 performance, as tag update time, screen changes etc., use poll groups in “Tags” and update tags only as fast as necessary. This will also have an impact on the Nexto CPU performance.

Restrictions

The maximum number of OPC UA clients simultaneously connected to the Nexto CPU (OPC UA server) is 8, and maximum number of communicating tags is 20000.
The maximum number of ARTI connections simultaneously connected to the Nexto CPU is 8 including BCS Tools connection.
There is also a restriction of number of communication tags that an X2 base/pro can handle, it is of course dependant of type of application; number of pages, dataloggers, trends, alarms, active controllers, scripting etc. But generally if more than 1000 communicating tags use X2 pro, if more than 2000 – 3000 communicating tags use iX runtime.

Troubleshooting

  • The OPC UA server and OPC UA client has to be on the same subnet to be able to communicate with each other.
  • OPC UA port nummer (Nexto Xpress/modular) is 4840. CoDeSys ARTI portnumber is 11740. Check that these ports are not blocked in any way, by firewall, antivirus program etc.
  • To find out if there is something related to the iX Developer project/BCS Tools project, try with simple as possible projects with only one tag and see if there is still an error in communication.
  • If OPC UA client in X2 can not connect to OPC UA server (Nexto CPU), try with a third party OPC UA client, to see if it is related to settings in X2 or Nexto. UaExpert from Unified Automation is an example of OPC UA client.
  • Always read the driver help file, that can be accessed from Tags -> Controllers -> Settings -> Hjälp in iX Developer.
