Plastica HELIOS II Solar Telescopic Reel

The Helios is a completely self-contained motorized reel for use on domestic swimming pools for the removal and storage of domestic floating pool covers.
FITTING THE REEL

  1. Remove all the items from the end stand box (square) and confirm you have the following items:
    a. Two end stands with tube brackets attached.
    b. Solar panel and lid for motor side bracket.
    c. Pack of 8 x M6 bolts and ground fixings.
    d. Pair of keys.
    e. Pack of 6 x tube to boss screws.
    f. Boxed motor complete with drive collar, timing collar and adjuster tool.

  2. Remove all the items from the tube box and confirm you have the following items:
    a. Outer tube sections with clamp bar and screws and second outer tube sections with clamp bar and screws. and locking assembly.
    b. Inner tube section.

  3. Fit tube sections together loosely and align with the edge of the pool where the reel is to be sited. Make sure the threaded blue strap lugs are evenly distributed along the inner and outer sections of the tubes recesses and that the tubes are arranged symmetrically.

  4. Slide the motor with both collars into the tube. Secure with 4 of the screws provided. Drill 3.5 to 4mm pilot holes first, the centreline of the drive collar should be 560mm from the end of the tube.

  5. Place end stands in position as close to the pool edge as possible and so as to give a minimum 150mm (6”) and a maximum 300mm (1’0”) overlap outside the pool side walls and mark this position.

  6. Remove the four fixing screws that are loosely fitted holding the two end stand parts together, then remove the bearing end stand back (6a).
Mark and then drill the four 12mm diameter x 45mm deep holes for the deck fixings. Ensure that the end stand boss is facing across the pool parallel to the pool edge.
    Fix loosely in place.

  7. Repeat on the motor side.

  8. Remove two M4 Allen key bolts that secure the top section of the motor bracket and remove top plastic section (8a).

  9. Lift the tube sections into place dropping the motor lugs into the end bracket and pushing the opposite outer tube over the bearing side end boss and fix with the remaining screws. Tighten the end stands down firmly.

  10. Making sure the middle section is symmetrical to the outer tubes, tighten firmly the tube clamping screws. It is advisable to support the centre of the tube to make sure that the tube assembly ends up clamped perfectly straight which will aid even rolling of the cover and tube.

  11. Pass the motor tube cable through the hole behind the plastic motor bracket.
Replace the motor bracket top section. Place the battery on its shelf.

  12. Replace the bearing end stand back and fit the four M5 screws and secure the lid.

  13. Connect the wires following the diagram below, replace the battery shelf and battery if you removed them to aid fixing. Before you fix the motor lid check which direction you need the solar panel, you can un-screw the column and refit to the set of holes for the direction you need the solar panel facing.Plastica HELIOS II Solar Telescopic Reel - FITTING THE REEL 2 How to wire the motorPlastica HELIOS II Solar Telescopic Reel - wire the motor

  14. Briefly operate the motor in both directions but do not yet attach the cover. Always ensure motor bracket top is secure first.

FITTING THE COVER

  1. Take the reel tube all the way in then send back out counting the revolutions. You will require 4 to 5 revolutions for the straps plus 12 to 18 revolutions depending on the pool length.
    a. 12 revolutions| 6m (20’)
    ---|---
    b. 14 revolutions| 7.5m (25’)
    c. 16 revolutions| 9m (30’)
    d. 18 revolutions| 11m (35’)
  2. Extend the number of rotations by turning the adjuster screws on the motor using only the tool provided.
  3. With the reel fully out, attach the cover straps as normal keeping them evenly tensioned and symmetrical.
  4. Take the cover in 2-3 turns and then adjust the limit so that the reel stops in this position.
  5. Take the cover fully in and adjust the other limit to set the stored position of the cover with the leading edge just raised off the pool deck.

TAKING CARE OF THE HELIOS REEL AND COVER

  1. All solar covers must be protected from UV light and excessive heat by covering with a solar protector sheet while they are stored on the reel.
  2. Keep the solar panel clean by wiping with a damp cloth every week to stop a build-up of dirt.
  3. If the tube sections become at all loose, tighten the clamps immediately to avoid damage to the fixings.
