Safety information for grinding and cutting wheels

Explanation of the information provided and the symbols used:

  1. Wheel diameter

  2. Hole diameter

  3. Wheel thickness

  4. Maximum speed and maximum circumferential speed

  5. Not permitted for wet grinding and wet abrasive cutting.

  6. Direction of rotation

  7. Caution! Wear protective gloves.

  8. Caution! Permitted for use only in fullyenclosed work areas. These grinding wheels are allowed to be used only on stationary grinding machines, the protective devices and systems of which are recognized as a fully-enclosed work area.

  9. Warning! Permitted only for wet abrasive cutting. These grinding wheels are allowed to be used only for wet abrasive cutting.

  10. Danger! Read all the safety information and instructions.

  11. Caution! Wear hearing protection. The impact of noise can cause damage to hearing.

  12. Caution! Wear a dust mask. Harmful dust can be generated when working on stone and other materials. Never use the wheel to work on any materials containing asbestos.

  13. Caution! Wear safety goggles. Sparks generated during work or splinters, chips, and dust emitted by the equipment can cause loss of sight.

  14. Danger! Not permitted for side grinding.
These grinding wheels are allowed to be used only for abrasive cutting.

  15. Danger! Not permitted for free-handed grinding. These grinding wheels are allowed to be used only on stationary grinding machines.

  16. Do not use a damaged grinding wheel.

  17. (e.d. – expiry date)

  18. EN standard mark

  19. Grit size, type of grinding material, degree of hardness, type of bonding and use of reinforcement

General information on cutting wheels and grinding wheels
Cutting wheels / grinding wheels consist of standard corundum, special corundum, silicon carbide, fillers and powder resin or liquid resin.
In addition the cutting wheels are embedded in a fabric made of fi berglass. Because this fabric layer lies typically on the outside, cutting wheels cannot be used as grinding wheels.
Grinding wheels consist mainly of the same materials as cutting wheels but are much thicker and can also contain quartz, emery, granite and diamond. Consequently a grinding wheel can be used only for grinding. A grinding wheel is unsuitable for cutting jobs.
Warning! Never use a wheel for non-approved materials or cuts!

Handling and storage

Warning!

  • Check the wheel for potential damage every time before you use it. Wheels with cracked bodies, imbalance or lateral run-out are not allowed to be used.
  • Handle the grinding wheel with care. Do not drop it and avoid knocking it.
  • Store the grinding tool in such a way that mechanical damage and harmful effects due to moisture, frost, one-sided heating/cooling, and aggressive media are avoided.

Choosing the correct cutting and grinding wheel
Warning!

  • The wheel must be suitable for the material you want to work on.
  • The dimensions of the cutting wheel must match the machine.
  • The maximum permitted speed of the wheel must be at least as high as the maximum spindle speed of the machine.

Assembly

Danger!

  • The direction of rotation of the wheel (refer to the arrow printed on the wheel) must always match the direction of rotation of the machine.
  • Do not make any alterations to the hole in the cutting wheel/grinding wheel.
  • Carefully check the clamping flanges. They must be mechanically in good condition and must be free of foreign bodies such as abraded particles.
  • Slide the grinding wheel onto the spindle or mounting without applying too much force, then align the wheel and carefully clamp it.
  • The use of reducer rings or reducer sleeves to reduce the size of the hole is not permitted for cutting wheels/grinding wheels.

Cutting

Danger!

  • Always secure the material that you want to cut.
  • The cutting wheel is suitable only for making straight cuts. Cutting curves or applying onesided pressure transversely to the direction of cutting can cause cracks in the cutting wheel and result in injuries.
  • When working, avoid engaging the wheel abruptly or too hard, and avoid knocks and bumps.
  • Avoid overloading the wheel by performing cuts without applying any pressure – the weight of the machine is sufficient!
  • Large cross-sections should be cut in multiple passes.

Special safety information

  • Make sure that the expiry date on the grinding wheel / cutting wheel has not been exceeded.
  • Check that the speed quoted on the grinding wheel / cutting wheel is the same or higher than the rated speed for the equipment.
  • Check that the grinding wheel / cutting wheel is of the correct size for the equipment.
  • Grinding wheels / cutting wheels must be handled and stored with care in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Examine the grinding wheel / cutting wheel before using it. Never use wheels that have parts broken off or which are cracked or damaged in any other way.
  • Check that grinding wheels are fitted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Make sure that intermediate layers are used if they are supplied with and required for the grinding wheel.
  • Fit the grinding wheel / cutting wheel in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the tool to run for 30 seconds in idle mode in a safe position.
  • If a guard hood is supplied with the electric tool, never use the electric tool without this guard hood.
  • Never use separate reducer sleeves or adapters in order to make grinding wheels with larger holes fit on the electric tool.
  • For grinding wheels with a thread insert, check that the thread is long enough to hold the length of the spindle.
  • Take precautions to ensure that flying sparks do not cause any danger, e.g. that they do not hit anyone or cause inflammable substances to ignite.
  • Wear eye protection and ear-muffs at all times.
  • Personal safety equipment such as a breathing mask, gloves, apron and a helmet should also be worn.
  • Cutting wheels with symbol No. 5 are allowed to be used only for dry cuts.
  • Grinding wheels with symbol No. 9 are allowed to be used only for wet grinding.

Observe in addition the safety information supplied with the related equipment.
Keep this safety information in a safe place.
