Hardware and Calibration

SoundCheck Hardware Configuration
The Hardware Configuration in SoundCheck must be setup for use with AmpConnect 621 before attempting a measurement. The Plug and Play feature in SoundCheck ensures that all the required Hardware Editor channels and Calibration Editor signal paths are established when AmpConnect 621 is connected to the computer.

Plug and Play
“Automatically create Signal Paths for Listen Devices” recognizes Listen Hardware and loads the correct input and output Vp values stored in the AmpConnect 621 audio interface memory.
The Vp value defines the maximum peak voltage that corresponds to 0 dBFS (Full Scale Deflection).
Settings are found in SoundCheck Preferences > Launch. This is enabled by default.
See the main SoundCheck manual > SoundCheck Main Screen > Preferences for more information on “Automatically create Signal Paths for Listen Devices”.

Figure 4-1: Hardware Editor

Driver Selection
AmpConnect 621 should be set to use the preferred ASIO driver as shown in Figure 4-2. AmpConnect 621 can also be used with WASAPI drivers.

Swapping Devices
If you swap one AmpConnect 621 for a different AmpConnect 621 while SoundCheck is open:
Open the SoundCheck Hardware Editor
Click Refresh. The editor will update to show the serial number of the new unit in the Device field as well as the new Vp values. The Listen Hardware Tab will also update and show that the new interface has replaced the old one.

Figure 4-2: Refresh Hardware Editor

Hardware Editor
The sample rate for AmpConnect 621 is set to 44.1kHz by default. Click on the drop-down arrow in the Default Sample Rate column and select from the available rates. This will update all input and output sample rate fields for the device.

Figure 4-3: Hardware Editor – Audio Tab

Latency – The Latency value for each sample rate is preset for AmpConnect 621. Generally these values should not need to be adjusted. For default Latency values see the tables on page 12.

Latency is the round trip time delay between input and output channels on a single audio interface when operating in full-duplex mode (record and play simultaneously). Consistent latency is essential for sample accurate measurements such as Absolute Phase. Refer to the SoundCheck Manual > Hardware Configuration > Latency Adjustment.

The following process should be followed if you find that latency is slightly different than the default hardware step included with SoundCheck. This could be due to differences in motherboard or driver version.
1. Open the Hardware Editor. Since Latency is Sample Rate dependent, click on the Default Sample Rate drop down to select the desired rate.

Figure 4-4: Sampling Rate

2. Click on the drop down arrow next to the value in the Latency field of the Hardware Editor. Select Edit and the Latency Table will open.
3. Set the Latency for the desired sample rate to 0 (zero) and click OK.

4. Make sure the sample rate of the audio interface has updated. Change the
ASIO Buffer/USB Streaming mode for the audio interface in the ASIO Control Panel (if applicable). Typically there is no buffer control for WDM / WASAPI.

5. Run the Self Test sequence from the Calibration folder in SoundCheck. This will give you the Latency for the new Buffer size or Sample Rate. (Some audio interfaces may require “fine tuning” of the Latency value by following Step 5 and then repeating Step 4.)

Figure 4-5: Edit Latencies Table

6. Enter this value in the Latency field of the Hardware Editor Sample Rate/Latency Table. Repeat this process for other required Sample Rates.

7. All channels, analog or digital, must have the same latency value per sample rate for that audio interface. This ensures the system will work correctly if they are used simultaneously in a sequence.

Latency Changes

Latency is the round trip time delay between input and output channels on a single audio interface when operating in full-duplex mode (record and play simultaneously). Consistent latency is essential for sample accurate measurements such as Absolute Phase. Refer to the SoundCheck Manual > Hardware Configuration > Latency Adjustment.

The following process should be followed if you find that latency is slightly different than the default hardware step included with SoundCheck. This difference can be due to motherboard or driver changes.
1. Open the Hardware Editor. Since Latency is Sample Rate dependent, click on the Default Sample Rate drop-down to select the desired rate.

Figure 4-6: Sampling Rate

2. Click on the drop-down arrow next to the value in the Latency field of the Hardware Editor. Select Edit and the Latency Table will open.

3. Set the Latency for the desired sample rate to 0 (zero) and click OK
4. Make sure the sample rate of the audio interface has updated. Change the ASIO Buffer/USB Streaming mode for the audio interface in the ASIO Control Panel (if applicable).

Figure 4-7: Edit Latencies Table

6. Enter this value in the Latency field of the Hardware Editor Sample Rate/Latency Table. Repeat this for other required Sample Rates.

7. All channels, analog or digital, must have the same latency value per sample rate for that audio interface. This ensures the system will work correctly if they are used simultaneously in a sequence.

Microphone Calibration
If using one of Listen’s SCM reference microphones the Mic Bias for the selected channel must be set to SCM or if using an IEPE microphone IEPE must be selected in the Startup Default or in a Message step as shown in Figure 4-16.
Any of the BNC inputs can be used with a reference microphone and should be calibrated according to the following instructions.

Figure 4-16: Mic Bias

This procedure allows you to check a reference microphone’s sensitivity against the microphone manufacturer’s specifications.
1. Open the Calibration Editor and select the Input tab. The Calibration Sequence should be set to Microphone.

2. Click Calibrate Device.

3. Select your calibrator model # from the pulldown menu or select Other Calibrator and enter the acoustic calibrator’s reference level and frequency as shown in Figure 4-18.

The microphone calibrator’s reference level should be indicated in its specification as an dBSPL value (relative to 20 µPa) at a reference frequency, e.g., for the Brüel & Kjær Type 4231 Acoustic Calibrator:
Sound Pressure Level: 94.00 dB ± 0.20 dB

Auto Dev Auto Chan

Frequency: 1000 Hz ± 0.1%

4. Under Measurement Microphone select the model number from the drop-down list.

Figure 4-17: Microphone Calibration

Note: The Auto Dev-Auto Ch feature ensures that the Gain setting for the selected AmpConnect 621 channel is automatically updated in the Calibration Gain fields.
Note: Refer to the SoundCheck Instruction Manual for information on adding a new mic.

18

Hardware and Calibration

AmpConnect 621TM Manual

5. Place the acoustic calibrator on the reference microphone and click Calibrate to measure its sensitivity.

If the Measured Sensitivity is outside the manufacturer’s specifications, a flashing FAILED message will appear. Check your connections and make sure the calibrator is turned on before assuming something is wrong with the microphone.

If a Reference Frequency of 1000 Hz is entered, but the Calibrator’s actual frequency is 1008 Hz, the Calibration may Fail. To verify the Calibrator’s frequency, use the Spectrum Analyzer under the Main Screen – Instruments menu.

Figure 4-18: Calibrate

The meter in Figure 4-18 indicates the corresponding dB level relative to 1 Volt per Pascal. If it varies by a few tenths of a dB from the last calibration measurement, do not be alarmed, this is normal. If it varies by more than 1 dB or failed the sensitivity test, the microphone should be checked by a qualified calibration lab.

TEDS Microphone
AmpConnect 621 supports TEDS transducers. Click on Read TEDS in the Calibration Editor when a TEDS transducer is connected to an AmpConnect 621 input. The Sensitivity value automatically updates along with the serial number and calibration date for the connected transducer.

AmpConnect 621 Message Step

AmpConnect 621TM Manual

USB Control Via SoundCheck

AmpConnect 621 is controlled by a SoundCheck Message Step and through the Hardware Editor Startup Default. This enables all AC621 settings and parameters such as gain and signal routing to be controlled within a test sequence. An eight-bit Digital I/O port provides digital control and/or status monitoring of external devices for operator feedback, test fixture control, etc.
The following example shows how to use a Message Step in SoundCheck to control AmpConnect 621.

AmpConnect 621 Message Step

Open the AmpConnect 621 Message Step from the Active Sequence in the right hand section of the editor.

Message Title – This is the text that will be in the top of the step window as it is run.

Message – Select Listen Hardware as shown in Figure 6-1.

Device ID – The user can select which AmpConnect 621 should be used if multiple AmpConnect 621s are on the system.

Note: Individual Digital I/O Message Steps may be required in a SoundCheck sequence to perform various operations.

AmpConnect 621TM Manual

Digital I/O Operation

27

Direction: Read vs. Write
Write (Output): The selected bit on the Digital I/O port changes to a TTL “High state”. See Figure 7-3.

Read (Input): The Digital I/O is expecting to read a state change at the DIO input. A High bit means that the step expects the selected bit(s) to see a “High State” when the step is run. See Figure 7-4.
The bit settings are applied when a Message Step runs in the sequence.

The AmpConnect 621 Digital I/O port has 8 bits which can be
configured as Read or Write. It is best to pick a range of bits used as Write and the remaining bits used as Read when using both functions. The examples used above are based on bits 0 through 3 used as Write and bits 4 through 7 used as Read.

Figure 7-3: Digital I/O – Write

Enable Bits Check Box
Enable bits by selecting the Check Box above the appropriate bit. If the bit is not checked it will be ignored by the sequence.
Pass/Fail
Set the Pass/Fail condition the message should show when it runs in the sequence. This can be used in Conditional Branching. See Configure Step and Conditional Branching Rules in the main SoundCheck manual.

Figure 7-4: Digital I/O – Read

Wait
You can set an amount of time for the step to pause before proceeding to the next step in the sequence. This may be needed to allow for settling time or operation time of external devices.

28

Digital I/O Operation

AmpConnect 621TM Manual

Digital I/O Rules Digital I/O Message Steps can be set to Read (Input) or Write (Output)
Best practice: Use a Digital I/O Message Step at the top of a sequence to “initialize” the Bits to a desired starting state
Bits are at ground when set Low, Message Step switch Off
Bits are at +3.3 V when set High, Message Step switch On
When set to Read (Input), enabled Bits set to High (On) are pulled high through an internal 100K resistor
The setting of the Bit indicates the state that you expect to read. That state is compared to the actual state of the physical Bit line to produce the PASS/FAIL result for the step.
The PASS/FAIL state of a Digital I/O Message Step set to Read is determined at the time the step is executed in the sequence.
If the state of any enabled Bit disagrees with the actual state of the selected Bit line, the step will issue a “FAIL” verdict when the step occurs during sequence run. This verdict is then used by the Step Configuration to perform Conditional Branching or sequence logic. See Step Configuration in the main SoundCheck Manual for more information.
If the state of all enabled Bits agree with the actual state of the Bit lines, the step will issue a “PASS” verdict.
Physical lines for Bits 0 through 7 have an internal 475 resistor in series with each line
The Pass/Fail radio buttons are not used
The digital I/O physical lines are +5 VDC tolerant. +5.5 VDC is maximum input.
The self-resetting fuse max operating current is 80 mA with trip point at 160 mA
Minimum turn on voltage is +2 VDC
Maximum turn off voltage is +0.8 VDC
Ret. – Digital I/O signal ground (at same potential as chassis ground)

Subsequent steps in the sequence might be used to set Bit 1 High and Bit 2 High to perform other functions
This is especially useful when controlling multiple external relays
The Pass/Fail radio buttons are not used

Figure 7-7 shows the Digital I/O Message Step that turns the Bit 0 LED Off. (In this case, the step turns off all Bits set to Write.)
This step might also be used at the beginning of the sequence to make sure all Write Bits are set Low before the sequence starts

Digital I/O Operation

AmpConnect 621TM Manual

Digital I/O Read Examples
The Digital I/O input of AmpConnect 621 can read the state of external TTL voltage levels and switch closures in a SoundCheck test sequence.
When set to Read (Input), the selected Bit(s) are pulled high through an internal 100K resistor. +3.3 VDC is present at all enabled Bit lines that are set High in the Message Step (switch on) You may want to use external pull-up resistors to increase noise immunity or pull-down resistors to force the input low, as shown in Figure 7-8.

Bit 4 Pulled Low – Normally Open Switch
In Figure 7-8 a Normally Open switch is wired across Bit 4 and +5 VDC
A 2.2 k resistor is also wired from Bit 4 to Ret. (GND)
When the switch is open, the Bit 4 physical line will be pulled Low through the 2.2 k resistor
When the switch is closed, Bit 4 will go High when +3.3 VDC is applied

When the Digital I/O Message Step in Figure 7-9 is executed in the sequence, it will Read the state of the physical input and compare it to the setting of Bit 4.
Bit 4 is set Low as the “normal” mode for the step so that it will react to the Bit being pulled high by the external switch closure
The Pass/Fail radio buttons are not used
If the actual state of the input agrees with the setting for Bit 4 the step will issue a “PASS” verdict

If the actual state disagrees the step will issue a “FAIL” verdict. This “FAIL” will be used in the Step Configuration shown in Figure 7-10.
Right click on a step in the Sequence Editor to select “Configure Step”
In this case, the “FAIL” verdict is used to tell the step to jump to a message, “Bit 4 Switch Closure”.
This might be used to stop the sequence and let the line operator know that a problem has occurred.

TTL Input Example SoundCheck may also need to receive a TTL signal from an external device such as a Production Line Controller.
Figure 7-14 shows the output of such a device connected across Bit 5 and Ret. (GND)
A pull down resistor is added between Bit 5 and Ret. (GND). The resistor value is dependent on the level of the TTL signal.
The max level allowed for the TTL signal is +5 VDC tolerant. Turn on voltage is +2 VDC nominal. Max turn off voltage is 0.8 VDC.

If the actual state of the input agrees with the setting for Bit 5 the step will issue a “PASS” verdict

Figure 7-15: Bit 5 Set High

If the actual state disagrees the step will issue a “FAIL” verdict. This “FAIL” will be used in the Step Configuration shown in Figure 7-16.
Right click on a step in the Sequence Editor to select “Configure Step”
In this case, the “FAIL” verdict is used to tell the step to jump to a failure message, “Bit 5 Failed”.

Digital I/O Message Step Configuration
The example sequence in Figure 7-17 shows the Message Step “Bit 4 High” is the first step in the sequence. This step is configured to Jump to itself if the verdict is “Fail”.
If the verdict is “Pass”, the conditional branching is set to Jump to the next step in the sequence. This allows you to start a sequence and wait for an external switch to tell the sequence to proceed. The sequence simply loops back to the first step until the external switch changes state.
Message Step Bit 4 High
Step Configuration Jump to step 2 to continue sequence
Step jumps back to itself, waiting to read switch

Normally this would be the first step run in the sequence.
Step Configuration The Message Step Configuration will need to point at the appropriate steps in a sequence.
Right-click on the Bit 4 High Message Step and select Configure Step. The editor in Figure 7-18 shows the proper settings for the example sequence.
Jump on PASS is checked and the target is the next step in the sequence. In this case, it jumps to “Bit 4 Notice”. This will allow the sequence to continue running if the state of Bit 4 High is satisfied.
Jump on FAIL is checked and the target is the first step in the sequence. This creates the loop that waits for the state of Bit 4 High to pass.

Normal Environmental Conditions AmpConnect may be used under the following environmental conditions:
Indoor use only, Pollution Degree 2 Altitudes up to 2,000 m Temperatures between 0 °C to 40 °C Maximum relative humidity 80% for temperatures up to 31 °C decreasing linearly to 50% relative
humidity at 40 °C
Power Requirements: 100-240 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, 200W
Connecting AmpConnect to the AC mains supply AmpConnect must be connected to a 50 or 60 Hz AC mains supply, with an operating voltage within 90 to 250 Vrms. The mains supply is connected to your AmpConnect via the power entry module located on the back panel. A 3-wire grounded power cord is supplied.
Ground the Instrument
Warning! A grounding-type power plug is included with AmpConnect 621. The chassis and cover must be connected to an electrical ground to minimize shock hazard. The ground pin must be firmly connected to an electrical ground (safety ground) terminal at the power outlet. Any interruption of the protective (grounding) conductor or disconnection of the protective earth terminal will cause a potential shock hazard that could result in personal injury.

USB Connection AmpConnect must be connected to the SoundCheck computer via the included USB cable in order to meet FCC and CE requirements.
Cleaning Clean the outside of the instrument with a soft, lint-free, slightly dampened cloth. Do not use detergent or chemical solvents.
Amplifier Operation at High Output Levels When operating the amplifier outputs, the minimum impedance is 4 ohms. Please note that Output A and B are connected in parallel and are provided for switching between two different loads under test. When both are enabled the loads will be in parallel and impedance will drop accordingly.
When the amplifier outputs are operating at >20W continuously, the output signal can only be active 33% of the time. In other words, a 30 second signal burst followed by 60 seconds of silence will maintain safe operating temperatures. If these temperatures are exceeded, the amplifier output will shut down until the unit cools off. When operating at maximum power the duty cycle will decrease to 25%.
