Warning Icon Most states and local codes regulate the construction, installation, and operation of public pools and spas, and the construction of residential pools and spas. Warning Icon Before using your pool, spa or hot tub, check the pH and sanitizer levels of the water.

Warning Icon When mixing acid with water, ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER. NEVER ADD WATER TO ACID. When adding any chemical to the pool/spa, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly.

Warning Icon CHEMICAL BURN HAZARD! Make sure all pumps are switched off at the circuit breakers before drilling into any pipes. Securely fasten all electrical, water and chemical lines. Locate chemical feed pumps and chemical storage tanks in a safe and secure area.

Warning Icon This product must be installed by a licensed or certified electrician or a qualified pool professional in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70 or the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA C22.2. All applicable local installation codes and ordinances must also be adhered to. Improper installation will create an electrical hazard which could result in death or serious injury to pool users, installers or others due to electrical shock, or may cause damage to property.

TAKE EXTREME CARE WHEN INSERTING THE ACID CONTAINER INTO THE STORAGE TANK, AS THE FOIL SEAL MAY NOT BE FULLY ATTACHED. STRICTLY FOLLOW THE ACID MANUFACTURERS SAFETY AND HANDLING PROTOCOLS INCLUDING HAND, BODY AND EYE PROTECTION WHEN TRANSFERRING OR HANDLING ACID.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE USED WHEN HANDLING MURIATIC ACID TO CONTROL PH WATER LEVELS. MURIATIC ACID CAN CAUSE SERIOUS BODY INJURY AND DAMAGE POOL EQUIPMENT. EXTRA CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN INSTALLING, MAINTAINING AND OPERATING ACID PUMP FEEDSYSTEMS. ACID IS DANGEROUS TO HANDLE AND SHOULD BE PROPERLY CONTAINED, TRANSPORTED, POURED, STORED, AND DISPENSED.

Danger IconINHALATION: Inhalation of vapors can cause coughing, inflammation of the nose, throat and upper respiratory tract and death. In case of inhalation, move to an area with fresh air immediately.

INGESTION: Swallowing can be fatal. Contact local poison control center or physician immediately. Give large amounts of water or milk. Allow person to vomit. If vomiting occurs, keep head lower than hips to avoid aspiration. If person is unconscious, turn their head to the side. Seek immediate medical attention.

STORAGE: Install and store container and acid in a dry, ventilated place protected from excess heat and direct sunlight. Should be stored at a temperature below 80°F (27°C). Be sure drainage is located away from building and equipment.

SKIN CONTACT: Wash skin with soap and water for at least 20 minutes and remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Contaminated clothes should be thoroughly cleaned before re-use.

EYE CONTACT: Flush eyes immediately with water for at least 20 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

VENTILATION: Use container outside and in a well-ventilated area.

EYE PROTECTION: Use splash-resistant safety goggles.

CLOTHING: Wear chemical-resistant clothing when handling or working with acid and chlorine.

GLOVES: Wear chemical-resistant gloves when handling or working with acid and chlorine.

DISPOSAL: Because of its corrosive nature, muriatic acid is a hazardous waste when spilled or discarded. Dispose of used acid at an approved hazardous waste facility or at your municipal household hazardous waste collection facility. Small spills of acid may be neutralized using baking soda. Carefully pour the baking soda onto the spilled material until the fizzing stops, then mop or scoop up the residue. Leave cleanup of large spills to the experts; call your local fire department or hazardous materials spill team.

FCC Standard – 47 CFR Part 15, Subpart C (Section 15.247). This version is limited to chapter 1 to chapter 11 by specified firmware controlled in the U.S.A.

Instruction to user – This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

  • Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
  • Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
  • Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.
  • Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help

Note: In order to maintain compliance with FCC regulations, shielded cables must be used with this equipment. Operation with non-approved equipment or unshielded cables is likely to result in interference to radio and TV reception. The user is cautioned that changes and modifications made to the equipment without the approval of the manufacturer could void the user’s authority to operate this equipment.

INTRODUCTION

The Pentair Home app is a perfect solution for remotely monitoring and controlling your pool equipment from the comfort of home.

ChemCheck™ Water Quality Monitor readings can only be accessed through a personalized Pentair Home account. This guide provides instructions on creating an account and using Pentair Home to get the most out of your ChemCheck.

Home Dashboard

From the Home Dashboard you can remotely monitor and control your pool and equipment. Press a specific equipment

tab to display controls. From any other screen, press the Dashboard Icon [7] to return to the Home Dashboard.

After ChemCheck has been paired to your Pentair Home account, the ChemCheck Dashboard can be accessed by pressing the ChemCheck equipment tab. For an overview of the ChemCheck Dashboard, refer to ChemCheck Dashboard, page 5.

  1. Dashboard Settings: Press to access pool info, notification settings and equipment warranty information, or log out of Pentair Home. The Home Dashboard can be customized by pressing EDIT DASHBOARD.
  2. Contact Pentair: Press to open the Contact Pentair screen. Send a message to Pentair general or device support, or report bugs within the app.
  3. System Status/Alerts: Displays current system alerts. Press to open a list of alerts.
  4. Add a Device: Press to open the Add a Device screen. Choose a device to add to your Pentair Home Account. For example; ChemCheck, Intelli Connect, IntelliSync, etc.
  5. Control System Tab : Displays current system/ device operation mode. PRESS THIS TAB TO ADD EQUIPMENT TO A DEVICE.
  6. Equipment Tabs: Displays individual equipment status (pump, heater, salt chlorinator, etc.). Press a specific tab to open its Equipment Settings screen.
  7. Dashboard Icon: Press to return to Home Dashboard from any screen.
  8. Devices Icon: Press to open the Devices screen. View all connected devices and equipment. Press an equipment tab to open its Settings screen.
  9. Schedule Icon: Press to open the Schedules calendar. Displays active schedules for connected equipment.
  10. Notifications Icon: Press to open the Alerts screen. Displays past and present system alerts.

INITIAL SETUP

Creating a Pentair Home Account
  1. From your chosen smart device, download Pentair Home from the Google Play® store (Android® devices) or Apple® app store (iOS® devices).

Note: Apple operating systems must be iOS® 11 or later. Android operating systems must be version 6.0 or later.

  1. Open the Pentair Home app ( ) from your smart device.

  2. A series of marketing screens will display. Press SKIP to jump to account creation.

  3. The Email Entry screen will display. Enter your email address and press GET STARTED.

  4. The Password Creation screen will display. See Figure 1.

  5. Enter your desired password in both entry fields (1), ensuring it meets the requirements shown on screen.

  6. Review the terms of service by pressing TERMS OF SERVICE. Check the Terms of Service Box (2) to acknowledge you have read the Terms of Service.

  7. Press CREATE MY ACCOUNT (3).

  8. The Verify Your Email screen will display and a verification email will be sent to the provided email address.

  9.  Verify your account using the link in the verification email.
    Note: If you do not receive a verification email press I DIDN’T GET THE EMAIL at the Check Your Email screen and follow on-screen instructions.

  10. After verification, the Create Profile screen will display. See Figure 2.

  11. Enter your profile information.

  12. Press the STANDARD or METRIC tab to choose which units the app will display.

  13. Press SAVE to save entries.

  14. Continue to Pairing ChemCheck to your Account, page 3.

Pairing ChemCheck to your Account
  1. At the top of the Home Dashboard screen, press ADD A DEVICE (1).

  2. The Add a Device screen will display. See FIGURE 4.

  3. From the list of devices, press CHEMCHECK WATER QUALITY MONITOR (2).

  4. The Installation screen will display. At ChemCheck unit: Remove the top cover from the ChemCheck. Press and hold the blue button for 3 seconds. The ChemCheck LED will pulse yellow and can now be paired to your smart device. From the Installation screen: Press CONTINUE.

  5. The Bluetooth Pairing screen will display (Figure 5).
    Initial Setup
    Ensure Bluetooth® wireless technology is enabled on your smart device and press CONTINUE (3).

  6. The Select Your ChemCheck screen will display. Select the ChemCheck you wish to pair.

  7. If pairing is successful the Bluetooth Pairing screen will display. Press CONTINUE.

  8. The Connect Your Device to WiFi screen will display (Figure 6).
    Initial Setup
    Select your WiFi router and enter the password. Press CONTINUE.

  9. The Device Address screen will display (Figure 7).

    Select your address from the Device Address dropdown menu and press CONTINUE (4).

  10. The Nickname screen will display. Enter the name you would like your ChemCheck to go by within Pentair Home. Press SAVE.

  11. Installation Completed will display. Press CONTINUE and continue to Sanitizer Calibration, page 4.

Sanitizer Calibration

After pairing ChemCheck to Pentair Home, the Sanitizer Calibration screen will display (Figure 8).
Initial Setup
ChemCheck must be calibrated before being placed into regular operation. Failure to calibrate will lead to incorrect or misleading water quality readings.

BEFORE CALIBRATING CHEMCHECK ENSURE:
  • Filtration pump is running
  • Any added chemicals have had at least 24 hours to evenly distribute and mix within pool water
  • ChemCheck has been installed a minimum of 24 hours
TO CALIBRATE CHEMCHECK:
  1. Use a high quality water testing kit or take your water to a pool store to ensure pool water chemistry is within the following ranges:
    • pH: 7.2 – 7.8
    • Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
    • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 500 ppm
    • Cyanuric Acid/Stabilizer: 30 – 60 ppm
    • Free Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm
    • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): 3000 – 6000 ppm (Salt Chlorinated Pools Only)
    • Salt: 3000 – 4500 ppm (Salt Chlorinated Pools Only)
    • Metals: None
    • Nitrates: None
    • Phosphates: Fewer than 125 ppb

  2. Ensure both ChemCheck flow valves are open.

  3. Enter the Free Chlorine value given by the water test strip. See Figure 8.

  4. Press CALIBRATE.

  5. Your Device Has Been Calibrated will display (Figure 9). Press OK to complete initial calibration.

  6. At the ChemCheck, press the blue button to manually start a water quality reading and confirm proper calibration.

Recalibration is recommended in the following cases:
  • At the beginning of each pool season.
  • After the pool is drained.
  • After the electrode is replaced.
  • After any major adjustment or change to water chemistry.
ChemCheck Dashboard

The ChemCheck Dashboard is the home screen for your ChemCheck Water Quality Monitor. Reading histories, general water quality, notifications and most other ChemCheck data can be accessed from this screen.

Operation

  1. ChemCheck Settings Icon: Opens the ChemCheck Settings screen. This screen displays information about your specific ChemCheck unit, local pool professionals, notification settings and remote monitoring settings. Refer to ChemCheck Settings, page 8 for more info.

  2. Alerts and Reminders: Displays alerts, errors and reminders when applicable. Refer to Troubleshooting, page 9 for a list ofalerts.

  3. ChemCheck Readings: Displays the latest pH, Sanitizer and Water Temperature readings, as well as how long ago they were reported by ChemCheck. Press to open Water Temperature History screen (Figure 14, page 6).

  4. Reading History Icon: Press to display historical graphs of pH, Sanitizer and Water Temperature readings.

  5. Manual Water Test: Displays overall water quality status from manual water tests.
    • EVERYTHING IN RANGE : The last completed manual water test showed readings were within the recommended range.
    • OUT OF RANGE: The last completed manual water test showed readings outside of the recommended range. Refer to Manual Water Tests and Balancing your Pool, page 6 for corrective actions.

  6. Water Test History Icon: Press to display a list of previous manual water test results.

Manual Water Tests and Balancing your Pool

The ChemCheck electrode electronically measures pH, ORP and Water Temperature. While electronic monitoring can reduce the frequency of manual water tests, it is not intended to fully replace them. Entering these manual water test results into Pentair Home will allow the app to provide various suggestions.

Any time the Manual Water Test tab (2) displays OUT OF RANGE a manual water test should be performed and recorded. A reminder recommending a manual water test will also appear on the ChemCheck Dashboard if a test has not been entered for two weeks. See Figure 10.

TO RECORD A MANUAL WATER TEST IN PENTAIR HOME:

  1. At the ChemCheck Dashboard, press START TEST inside the Reminder tab (1) or ENTER NEW TEST inside the Manual Water Test tab (2). See Figure 10.
    Operation

  2. The Manual Water Test screen will display. Choose the test method you wish to use.

  3. The Results Entry screen will display (Figure 11). Perform a water test and enter the results into the appropriate fields.

  4. Press SAVE.

  5. The Pool Info screen will display. Enter your pool volume or verify previously entered volume.
    Note: If unsure of your pool’s volume, press the calculator icon in the right side of the entry window to open a volume calculator.

  6. Press CONTINUE.

  7. The Results screen will display. See Figure 12.
    Operation
    • If OUT OF RANGE: A list of recommended balancing agents will be shown.
    • If EVERYTHING WITHIN RANGE: Press SAVE to exit.

  8. Select the balancing agent you wish to correct the imbalance with.

  9. Press CONTINUE.

  10. The Recommended Dosage screen will display (Figure 13). Recommended Dosages (3) will be shown for each selected balancing agent.
    Operation

  11. Enter the amount of each balancing agent (4) being added to the pool.

  12. Press SAVE.

Reading Histories

Pentair Home automatically stores a history of electrode readings as they are received from the ChemCheck cell. Historical data for water temperature, pH and sanitizer readings can be accessed from the ChemCheck Dashboard by pressing the Bar Graph Icon to the right of “ChemCheck Readings”.

  • pH (Figure 14): Previous pH readings can be viewed on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly graph.

  • Sanitizer (Figure 15): Previous sanitizer readings can be viewed on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly graph.

  • Water Temperature (Figure 16): Previous water temperature readings can be viewed on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly graph.

pH Offsets

If the ChemCheck Water Quality Monitor is sensing a different pH than your manual water test is giving, a pH offset should be entered into the app to compensate. Before recalibrating ChemCheck, ensure ChemCheck readings are incorrect using a calibrated electronic probe.

TO SET AN OFFSET:
  1. Ensure the filtration pump is running and no chemicals have been added to the pool in the previous 24 hours.

  2. At the ChemCheck Dashboard, press the Settings icon (Figure 17).
    Operation

  3. The ChemCheck Settings screen will display.

  4. Scroll to and press pH OFFSET.

  5. The Enter pH Level screen will display.

  6. Enter the pH results (2) from your manual water test and press CALIBRATE (3). See Figure 18.

Remote Monitoring

If desired, you may request a local pool professional to remotely monitor your ChemCheck water quality readings and system alerts.
Remote access to this information can be revoked at any time via ChemCheck Settings.

TO REQUEST REMOTE MONITORING:
  1. At the ChemCheck Dashboard, press the Settings icon (1).

  2. The ChemCheck Settings screen will display.

  3. Scroll to and press REMOTE MONITORING.

  4. The Contact a Pro screen will display, showing a list of local pool professionals offering remote monitoring. See Figure 19.
    Operation

  5. Select your preferred pool professional.

  6. The Pro Request screen will display. Press REQUEST REMOTE MONITORING. See Figure 20.

  7. An explanation of remote monitoring will display. To proceed with the request, press SEND REQUEST. See Figure 21.
    Operation

  8. The Pro Request screen will display again and will verify your request has been sent.

ChemCheck Settings

Operation

ChemCheck Settings can be accessed by pressing the Settings icon ( ) in the top right of the ChemCheck Dashboard (refer to ChemCheck Dashboard on page 5).

  1. Product Overview: View and edit general information about your ChemCheck such as pool address, last reported pH/ORP readings, pH/ORP offsets, and your ChemCheck’s software version and ID.

  2. Notifications: Control where and how device notifications are delivered.

  3. Product Support: Opens www.pentair.com within the app.

  4. Contact a Professional: Use your address to find a local pool professional. Search results will contain all local pool professionals.

  5. Remote Monitoring: Use your address to find and contact local pool professionals offering to remotely monitor your ChemCheck readings. Search results will only contain professionals offering remote monitoring.
    Remote monitoring permissions can be given and revoked from this screen at any point. Refer to Remote Monitoring, page 7 for more info.

  6. WiFi: View and update the WiFi network your ChemCheck is paired to, as well as the last reported signal strength.
    Note: To update a WiFi network, the user must be connected via Bluetooth® wireless technology. Refer to Pairing ChemCheck to your Account, page 3 for instructions.

  7. Manual Water Test: Enter manual water test results and view previous water tests and balancing processes. Refer to Manual Water Tests and Balancing your Pool, page 6 for more info.

  8. Battery Life: View your current battery charge level. This tab is inactive if your ChemCheck is AC-powered (corded).

  9. Winterization Mode: View instructions for winterizing ChemCheck.

  10. Sanitizer Calibration: Calibrate ChemCheck to ensure accurate ORP readings. Refer to Sanitizer Calibration, page 4 for more info.

  11. pH Offset: Set an offset to compensate for differences between ChemCheck pH readings and manual water test pH results. Refer to pH Offsets, page 7 for more info.

  12. Remove Device: Remove ChemCheck from your Pentair Home account.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Status Check LED

A quick flow, connectivity and electrode status check can be performed by pressing the blue button on top of the ChemCheck. This button, and its accompanying LED, are located between the WiFi Antenna and Electrode Connection.

Note: Water readings will pause for 5 minutes after the blue button is pressed. If all status checks were successful

(Solid Blue, Solid Green, and Solid Purple LEDs) readings will restart after this pause.

Start a status check sequence by pressing the blue button once. The Status LED will illuminate and ChemCheck wil cycle through the three separate status checks. The chart below shows the order in which statuses will display and what a specific LED behavior means:

App Alerts

No Flow Alert

ChemCheck checks for proper water flow every 15 minutes. If water flow is not detected for 24 hours, a No Flow Alert will display on the ChemCheck Dashboard.

Device Offline Alert

When flow is detected, ChemCheck attempts to connect to the internet every hour. When is flow is NO detected, ChemCheck attempts to connect to the internet every 12 hours. If a connection can not be established during this time, a Device Offline alert will display on the ChemCheck Dashboard.
