OBJECT
To move your pieces forward along the white squares on the board and capture all or most of your opponent’s pieces to win the game.
GETTING STARTED
One player uses light game pieces, and one player uses dark game pieces. Only the dark squares on the board are used during set up and game play. Each player places their game pieces on the 12 white squares closest to them. (SEE DIAGRAM A)
PLAYING THE GAME
The dark game pieces move first. Players take turns moving their game pieces
diagonally from one square to another. Moves are made one square at a time.
If an opponent’s game piece stands in the way and there is an empty square
beyond that piece, it can be captured.
A game piece making a capturing move (a jump) leaps over one of the opponent’s
game pieces, landing in a straight diagonal line on the other side. (SEE
DIAGRAM B)
Only one piece may be captured in a single jump; however, multiple jumps are
allowed on a single turn if the player is jumping forward (toward the
opponent). (SEE DIAGRAM C)
When a player jumps over their opponent’s piece, that piece is removed from
the board.
If a player is able to make a capture, the jump must be made. If more than one
capture is available, the player is free to choose whichever he or she
prefers.
When a piece reaches the furthest row from the player who controls that piece,
it is crowned by placing a captured piece on top of it and becomes a king.
Kings are limited to moving diagonally one square, but may move both forward
and backward. (Remember that single game pieces, i.e. non-kings, are always
limited to forward moves.)
Kings may combine jumps forward and backward on the same turn. Single game
pieces may shift direction diagonally during a multiple capture turn, but must
always jump forward.
WINNING THE GAME
The first player to lose all of their pieces loses the game. If a player is put in a position where they cannot move, they lose. If the players have the same amount of pieces, the player with the most kings wins. If the players have an equal number of pieces and the same number of kings the game is a draw.
