OELCHECK Taking Grease Samples
Instructions on taking grease samples
In addition to a sample bottle, an envelope and a return label, our special
analysis kits for greases include a tube (185 mm) and a Grease Sample
Information Form.
For optimum utilization of our all-inclusive analysis kits for greases, we
recommend using the sampling kit (Z-3) for grease samples.
OELCHECK helps you to choose the most suitable analysis kit!
The kit (Z-3) for taking grease samples includes:
- A syringe used to create a vacuum in an attached plastic tube. Thus, a grease sample can be drawn directly into the tube from the application area.
- A transparent, flexible plastic tube (10 x 185 mm). The grease sample is drawn with the syringe into this tube, which is also included in each analysis kit for greases.
- Three spatulas in different sizes. With these, the grease can be removed and filled directly into the sample bottle without using the tube.
- A cleaning cloth (approx. 350 x 350 mm) to clean the sampling area or to remove impurities.
DEGREE OF FILLING FOR THE RESPECTIVE ANALYSIS KIT
Place the tube at the ruler. Check whether it is sufficiently filled with
grease.
If penetration determination with full cone is desired, or NLGI class < 0,
then sample quantity = 1,500 g.
SAMPLING
SAMPLING USING THE SYRINGE
- Clean the area around the sampling point with the cleaning cloth.
- Place the tube on the syringe cone and push it e.g. instead of the lubricating nipple through the lubrication hole.
- Use the syringe to draw at least the needed amount of grease (see ruler) into the plastic tube only.
- When doing so, do not draw in too much air.
- Remove the tube and bend it in the middle. Put it into the OELCHECK sample bottle with the bend facing up.
- The syringe can be used multiple times as long as it is not contaminated.
SAMPLING USING A SPATULA
If the sample taking is not possible using the syringe, you can use one of
the spatulas (preferably not a screwdriver).
- Clean the area around the sampling point with the cleaning cloth.
- Mix the grease using the spatula or with a slow rotation in order to acquire the perfect reference sample.
- Ensure, by means of a visual check, that only grease which is intended for analysis is being sampled.
- Spread the grease from the spatula onto the opening of the sample bottle or in the cap.
PROCEDURE
PROCEDURE WITH ROLLING BEARING REMOVED
Draw the used grease from the cage area and between the rolling elements into
the tube or remove the grease from this area with a spatula.
PROCEDURE WITH ROLLING BEARING ATTACHED
Remove the lubricating nipple or disconnect the central oiler pipe. Push the
tube included through the thread hole. Draw the needed amount of grease
(depending on the analysis kit) into the tube using the syringe. Check
visually, based on changes in colour and structure, if the tube mainly
contains used grease.
PROCEDURE FOR LARGE ROLLING BEARINGS (E.G. DIAMETER > 1,000 MM)
- Remove the grease from the sampling openings provided, which are usually closed during operation.
- The sampling points should preferably be on the tracks in the main load-carrying area. For the best possible results, take samples from several points and mix these together in the sample bottle.
- Or take up to four grease samples distributed evenly over the circumference and label them accordingly.
We can make thorough diagnoses when sending a fresh grease sample with the used grease. For trend analyses, samples should always be taken at the same sampling point using the same sampling procedure.
GUIDELINES FOR SHIPMENT
- Enter your sample data online via www.lab.report or use the Grease Sample Information Form provided.
- Stick the barcode from the Sample Information Form onto the sample bottle.
- Tear off the sample reference from the bottom of the Sample Information Form.
- Place the sample bottle in the leak-proof envelope and the Sample Information Form in the external window pocket. Send the envelope to OELCHECK (within Germany the shipment is free of charge with the enclosed UPS label).
