FAQ

How do I decide which page set to use?
The right page set for each user is determined by multiple factors, including access needs, literacy level, symbol needs and preferences, language acquisition style (analytic versus gestalt), clinical diagnosis (aphasia etc.), and their language(s). The best guidance comes from your referring clinician or local Tobii Dynavox solutions consultant. They will look at the unique profile and needs of each user and make a recommendation. Visit TobiiDynavox.com and select Contact to find your local solutions consultant or Tobii Dynavox partner.

Can I try different page sets?
Yes! You can choose a different page set at any time. Go to Edit > Page set > [Select the current page set] > New page set. Experiment with different page sets at the beginning of your journey if you like. However, once the user starts familiarizing themselves and having success with a particular page set, it is best to stick with that one.

What if the user is struggling to make selections accurately?
There are a number of ways to help the user make selections quickly and accurately. Everything from changing the access method to adjusting settings to choosing a different grid size or simply repositioning the device can solve access issues. We can help! Always reach out to your local clinician, solutions consultant, or Tobii Dynavox partner first. Otherwise, call or email Tobii Dynavox support.

Tips for Introducing AAC

Make a team effort
Family members and other key people should all be familiar with TD Snap. Allow each person some time to explore the app and locate common words that come up in their interactions with the AAC user.

Keep it handy
Have the AAC device with you and accessible to the user at all times. Think of the AAC device as their voice. You are never without your voice and they should not be without theirs!

Model, model, model
People learn language by observing and listening, then trying it themselves. It has been proven that modeling is the best way to teach people to communicate using AAC. Modeling involves touching and using the device as you talk and interact with the person. Model communication using TD Snap when you are talking to the AAC user and throughout the day. Family members and caregivers should all participate in modeling as well.

  • Modeling is about showing the individual how to communicate.
  • It does not require imitation.
  • Model key words instead of every word you say.
  • Model as you look for vocabulary.
  • Mistakes are OK. They give you the chance to model how to correct them.
  • Modeling is not quizzing or testing.

Watch a video demonstrating modeling.

Respond to all communication attempts
It is common that AAC users will explore their device and make selections that seem random at first. When you respond to their selections, you reinforce that each word has meaning and has real world results.

Recognize opportunities
Identify times during the day when an individual can learn and practice communication skills. For example, help them use TD Snap to communicate their choice of snack to eat or movie to watch.

Be patient
Learning to use AAC is like learning any new language. You would not expect anyone to produce substantive communication in a completely new language in the first days or even weeks of trying. Just continue to model, provide high interest opportunities for communication, and responding to any selections that they make in TD Snap.

Being a Great Communication Partner

Remember to use the strategies below to be a good communication partner and create an environment for communication success.

Create a positive communication environment
Adopt these attitudes and strategies that encourage communication.

  • Assume competence
“I know you have things to say.” “You can do this.”

  • Focus on use, not testing
Instead of saying “Find book.” Say “It’s reading time. What book should we read?”

  • Respond to all modes of communication
Learner: Smiles at you. Partner: “Well, hello to you too!”

  • Wait
AAC communication takes time. Count to five before providing help to locate vocabulary. If the AAC user is composing a sentence, wait patiently for them to speak instead of reading over their shoulder, guessing what they will say, or simply moving on in the conversation.

Look for Success
Communication success is more than the individual communicating what you expect, when you expect it, and how you expect it.

Success may include:

  • Increased attention to interactions
  • Initiation of communication
  • Use of more vocabulary
  • Longer interactions
  • Greater enjoyment of interactions
  • More independence in communication

Activity: Scavenger hunt!

Share & Save Your Pages

Sync

Syncing allows you to:

  • Use the same version of the page set on multiple devices
  • Share the page set with others
  • Edit remotely
  • Save your page set to the cloud in a single click

Unlike copying, synced pages are connected to each other through an up-to-date version in the cloud. When you select Sync, you send changes that you’ve made to the cloud and receive changes that others have made. When all of the connected devices have synced, they all have the same version of the page set!

This is your Sync button. It is located on the Top Bar of TD Snap.

Save to a File
Your TD Snap user and pages can be backed up to a file. These files can be stored and shared on myTobiiDynavox.com or you can save them locally on your device or USB.tobii-dynavox-TD-Snap-Basics-Training-Cards-
FIG-13

Sync
Syncing is most useful when the user is moving between multiple devices. Perhaps they have a device at school and another device at home. Sync the page set between the two devices to ensure consistency. Syncing can also be used to edit remotely, without disturbing the user. For example, the user can continue using their communication device while you edit the page set on your PC. Sync on the PC, then sync on the communication device to receive the changes. Syncing can also be used as a convenient backup method for a single device. Each time you Sync, you create a backup to the cloud.

Save to a File
Saving to a file is better for sharing with people who want to make their own changes, separate from you, and when you just want to save or share a couple of pages, not a whole page set. Saving to a file is great for times when you don’t have an internet connection. Create a backup file for yourself or put the file on a USB drive to share with someone else. Saving to a file is the only way to back up a User, including all of their settings.
