INTRODUCTION

The OTTOVAC is a portable electric vacuum lifting device intended to lift and move glass and any other material that has a smooth, flat and non-porous surface. The OTTOVAC has a built-in pressure sensor with an automatic start/stop function. When the vacuum in the base of the suction cup reaches -55 kPa, the pump will automatically stop after a three-second delay. When the vacuum level drops below -55 kPa, the pump will automatically restart, reaching the required pressure during operation. The OTTOVAC is not intended:

  • to be used for climbing or securing the human body in any way. This product is not designed or intended for climbing or to support a person’s weight. Using this product for climbing or any other unintended purpose may result in injury or death.
  • to lift, move, or place objects consisting of very porous, soft/flexible, and crumbling materials, such as simple cardboard boxes, styrofoam, dry cast pavers, compressed sand, or bad quality concrete.

OTTOVAC lifting capacity

NOTICE: The OTTOVAC has been tested up to 200 kg (440 lbs) at maximum lifting force under ideal test conditions. However, this test weight figure is the breaking point under optimal laboratory test conditions and must never be reached in any real-world application!
Local regulations may require different safety margins to be used and the official device Working Load Limit (WLL) has been set to 100 kg (220 lbs) based on a 2:1 ratio and  66 kg (145 lbs) on a 3:1 ratio for a non-porous surface. The Working Load Limit of 100 kg (220 lbs) is 50% of the maximum lifting force tested and 66 kg (145 lbs) is 33% of the maximum lifting force tested under ideal conditions (200 kg/440 lbs) and this Working Load Limit must be adhered to when working in countries where the 2:1 and 3:1 safety margin applies. IMPORTANT:   The lifting force is highly dependent on the lifted surface and factors such as temperature, altitude (ambient pressure), and other factors.
Always check the pressure displayed on the OTTOVAC vacuum gauge and do not rely solely on the estimated maximum lifting forces chart when lifting different materials, since different factors relating to your specific application may reduce the lifting capabilities of the device.

NOTICE: When the vacuum level drops below -0.55 Bar (-55 kPa), the OTTOVAC will automatically restart the pump (when the pump is switched on), thereby achieving the pressure required for use.

GENERAL POWER TOOL
SAFETY WARNINGS
WARNING: Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious personal injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

  1. WORK AREA SAFETY
    a. Keep your work area clean and well lit.
    Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents.
    b. Do not operate power tools in an explosive atmosphere, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite dust or fumes.
    c. Keep children and bystanders away  while operating a power tool.
    Distractions can cause you to lose control.

  2. ELECTRICAL SAFETY
    a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
    b. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.
    c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
    d. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
    e. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
    f. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of a RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

  3. PERSONAL SAFETY
    a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
    b. Use personal protective equipment.
    Always wear eye protection.
    Protective equipment such as a dust mask, nonskid safety shoes, a hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
    c. Prevent unintentional starting.
    Ensure the switch is in the offposition before connecting to a power source and/or battery and picking up or carrying the tool.
    Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
    d. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
    e. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
    f. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
    g. If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Removal of dust can reduce dustrelated hazards.
    h. Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

  4. POWER TOOL USE AND CARE
    a. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
    b. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn on and off easily. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
    c. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
    d. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
    e. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
    f. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
    g. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
    h. Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

  5. BATTERY TOOL USE AND CARE
    a. Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery may create a risk of fire when used with another battery.
    i. Use power tools only with specifically designated batteries. Use of any other battery may create a risk of injury and fire.
    j. When the battery is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, such as paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects that may make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
    k. Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.
    l. Do not use a battery or tool that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit  unpredictable behavior resulting in fire, explosion or risk of injury.
    m. Do not expose a battery or tool to fire or excessive temperature. Exposure to fire or temperature above 130 °C/265 °F may cause an explosion.
    n. Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery or tool outside the temperature range specified in the instructions.
    Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

  6. SERVICE
    a. Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
    b. Never service a damaged battery. Service of battery should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.
    VACUUM LIFTING DEVICE SAFETY WARNINGS / INSTRUCTIONS
    a. Do not deliberately try to rip the load off with extreme force. There is a risk of the load crushing feet and hands and damaging the object and tool.
    b. Do not lift objects weighing more than 200 kg (440 lbs). There is a risk the weight can fall off.
    c. Risk of load crushing feet and hands and damaging the object and tool.
    Do not shake the tool while lifting, moving and placing objects. Do not swing or shake the load while lifting, moving and placing objects. Do not use the tool when the seal is worn out. Lift and carry the load with uniform speed without sudden sharp and strong movements.
    d. Do not use the tool while the battery is low. There is a risk of injury and damage to the materials being lifted.
    e. Do not attach the tool to surfaces with visible puddles of water. Internal components are not waterproof. If water is sucked into the air ducts it can cause permanent damage to the tool. The OTTOVAC is not waterproof and therefore extreme caution should be taken when using it in the rain or wet conditions.
    f. Do not drop the tool from heights above 1.5 meter above the ground (chest level). If dropped by accident, inspect the OTTOVAC for damage.
    g. Do not place heavy objects on top of the tool.
    h. To avoid overheating, do not cover the tool.
    i. Ensure the power ON/OFF button is in the off position before transporting the tool and when in storage. Be mindful that the tool is not switched on accidently.
    j. NOTICE: Due to the high pressure that is created with the OTTOVAC we strongly recommend that you do not attempt to attach the OTTOVAC to glass thinner than 6mm thick. Damage can occur to glass that is thinner than 6mm thick.
    k. The OTTOVAC is not designed or intended for climbing or securing people in any way. Using this product for climbing or any other unintended purpose may result in injury or death.
    l. Before each use, make sure the suction pad is smooth, clean, undamaged and without any cracks.
    m. Clean the suction pad regularly with methylated spirit or other nonaggressive cleaners.
    n. Make sure the surface/object to be lifted is made of non-porous material. In addition, the surface must be clean, dry and free of oils and grease.
    o. On rough or porous surfaces, the holding capacity decreases or is nonexistent.
    p. Do not use sharp objects to loosen the suction lifter from the surface as this will damage the suction pad.
    q. Only use the suction lifter if you are experienced or supervised by someone experienced in handling this tool.
    r. Always test the functioning of the suction lifter before use. Examine the handle for dents or cracks. Examine the rubber pad for excessive glaze, cuts or roughness.
    s. OTTOVAC should only be used for lifting, carrying and holding objects for a short period of time. However, in cases of long periods of attachment, check the vacuum gauge Ⓓ regularly to ensure firm grip.
    t. OTTOVAC is a hand tool and should not be used as a crane, hoist or similar. Store OTTOVAC in a flat position when not in use in its original storage box.
    u. Before use, always check the rubber pads for possible loss of suction capacity due to reduced elasticity caused by excessive age, usage, maintenance, storage etc. Rubber
    pads that are damaged or lack sufficient suction capacity must be replaced. Never use OTTOVAC with damaged rubber pads or insufficient suction capacity!
    v. Do not exceed the stated lifting capacity. Cold temperatures, humidity and pollution, carelessly treated or even damaged suction pads or usage on materials other than glass and smooth, flat nonporous material may reduce the holding capacity considerably.
    w. Do not place the cup face against surfaces that could damage the sealing edges.
    x. Do not touch the release tab Ⓔ or the pressure release button Ⓐ while lifting. Do not use solvents, gasoline or other harsh chemicals on the suction pad.

If the OTTOVAC sealing force begins to noticeably decrease while the battery is fully charged, check the rubber seal for wear and tear or damage. Do not attempt to lift anything with the OTTOVAC until you have replaced the seal.
WARNING:   Weight may drop without warning if the safety precautions are not met! The OTTOVAC creates a strong vacuum. In case the seal is broken or the allowed weight is exceeded or any other factor that causes the negative pressure to release spontaneously, this kind of failure will happen suddenly and absolutely without any sensory indication or warning. You will not notice the weight detaching and there will be no possibility to stop or catch it. This is very dangerous, especially with heavy loads. Therefore all safety precautions should be kept to the maximum.

NOISE EMISSION/VIBRATION

l A-weighted sound pressure level LpA=79.4 dB(A), uncertainty K=3 dB(A). A-weighted sound power level LwA=71.4 dB(A), uncertainty K=3 dB(A).
l Vibration total value=1.240 m/s², uncertainty K=0.11 m/s². The declared vibration total value has been measured in accordance with a standard test method and may be used for comparing one tool with another. The declared vibration total value may also be used in a preliminary assessment of exposure.
WARNING: The vibration emission during actual use of the power tool can differ from the declared total value depending on the ways in which the tool is used. It’s necessary to identify safety measures to protect the operator based on an estimation of exposure in the actual conditions of use (under consideration of all parts of the operating cycle such as the times when the tool is switched off and when it is running idle in addition to the trigger time).

TRANSPORT

The OTTOVAC is not shipped with batteries. This is to reduce the risk of hazards when shipping the device.

OPERATION

LIFTING TECHNIQUES

  • Plan ahead. Know what you are lifting and how you will lift it. Be aware of the weight of the object. Determine whether or not it is safe to lift on your own. Make sure the work area is flat, dry and clear of debris.

  • Check your path. Make sure the lift path is clear. Remove any tripping hazards or debris.
    Check for any wet or slick surfaces.

  • Use ergonomic equipment. Use lift assists such as a forklift, dolly, cart, hand truck, or hoist.

  • Make sure you are trained before using the equipment.

  • Get help when needed. When lifting awkward or heavy loads, utilize a two person lift.
    Make sure you lift at the same time and keep the load level.

  • Wear proper required protective shoes and gloves.
    Use this basic lifting technique for small objects when you can straddle the load and use a wide stance.
    1. Get as close to the object as possible.
    2. Use a wide stance with one foot forward and to the side of the object for good balance.
    3. Keep your back straight, push your buttocks out. Use your legs and hips to lower yourself down to the object.
    4. Move the object as close to you as possible.
    5. Put your hand (same side of your body as the forward foot) on the side of the object farthest from you.
    6. When lifting the load holding the OTTOVAC with one hand, secure the load with your other hand.
    7. Prepare for lifting, tighten your core muscles, look forward and upward, and maintain a straight and strong back.
    Do not hold your breath while lifting. Do not bend or twist your waist. Do not use a partial grip (1-2 fingers). Do not obstruct your vision when carrying. Do not jerk or lift quickly. Do not pinch your fingers or toes.
    8. Lift slowly and follow with your head and shoulders. Hold the load close to your body. Lift by extending your legs with your back straight, and breathe out as you lift. Pivot your feet to avoid twisting.

OPERATING THE OTTOVAC

  1. Position the OTTOVAC firmly against the surface of the object you want to lift.
  2. Press the power ON/OFF button Ⓑ to turn on the motor and create a seal on the surface of the item you want to lift. The indicator light Ⓖ will flash green when the motor is running. The seal will be created within seconds.
  3. When the sensor detects that maximum pressure is reached, the pump will automatically turn off. For the automatic pump to work, make sure the motor is turned on (the indicator light is solid green) when lifting any objects.
  4. When you have finished, press the power ON/OFF button Ⓑ to turn off the motor.
  5. Press the Pressure release button Ⓐ to break the seal and release the object.

WARNING: When the batteries are low, the indicator light will flash green and red. Using the OTTOVAC while the batteries are low may result in injury and damage to the
materials being lifted. It is advisable to check that you are using fully charged batteries before using the OTTOVAC.
INSERTING AND CHANGING THE BATTERY 5

  1. Press the Battery compartment release button Ⓒ to release the Battery compartment Ⓕ .
  2. Insert 4 x AA alkaline batteries (not included) in accordance with the markings on the Battery compartment Ⓕ . If you do not adhere to the markings, the OTTOVAC will not work.
  3. Put the loaded Battery compartment Ⓕ back into the OTTOVAC.
  4. Press the Power ON/OFF button Ⓑ to turn on the OTTOVAC.

WARNING: The Battery compartment Ⓕ will not eject automatically when there are no batteries inside. Press the Battery compartment release button Ⓒ and pull the Battery compartment Ⓕ out when you insert the batteries for the first time.
WARNING: Using the OTTOVAC while the batteries are low may result in injury and damage to the materials being lifted.
WARNING:  Only use genuine batteries from major brands.
WARNING:  Take the batteries out when the device is not in use to avoid battery
leakage and corrosion of the circuit board.
EXPLANATION OF VISUAL INDICATORS

  • Red indicator light: The OTTOVAC is equipped with a thermal protection system to extend its service life. If the temperature of the motor/PCBA is between 50–60°C, the red light will flash quickly and the device will operate normally. However, if the temperature exceeds 60°C, a continuous red light will illuminate and the OTTOVAC will not work.
  • Green indicator light: The light will flash green if pressure is building up and reaching its maximum capacity. The light will be a constant green if the pressure reaches its maximum capacity (when the power ON/OFF button is ON).
  • Flashing green and red indicator light: If the batteries are low, the indicator light will flash green and red.

MAINTENANCE

CAUTION: Under no circumstances should the OTTOVAC be opened for repairs or any other purpose by anyone other than an after-sales service technician authorised by Nemo Power Tools Ltd. Opening the OTTOVAC will invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.

  • Always keep the rubber pad clean and free of oil or grease. Clean the suction pad regularly with methylated spirit or other non-aggressive cleaners.
  • To preserve its elasticity, do not expose the rubber pad to direct sunlight for excessive periods of time.
  • If the OTTOVAC does not function properly, the cup face may be dirty or the suction cup may require servicing. In this case, please contact our customer service department or an authorised dealer for assistance.

REPLACING THE AIR FILTER 7
The filter needs to be replaced when the filter is badly worn or ripped (at customer’s discretion). This is determined by how the OTTOVAC is being used. When lifting clean material, the filter will last longer than when being used on dirty/dusty materials.

  1. Turn the OTTOVAC upside down so you can see the suction pad.
  2. Use the tip of a screwdriver to remove the filter.
  3. Push the replacement filter into the bottom plate and secure it in place.

DISPOSAL

Do not dispose of electric equipment, batteries, accessories, and packaging in domestic waste. Electrical equipment that has reached the end of its life shall be collected separately and returned to an environmentally compatible recycling facility.
