Power Quest® I GS

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing AudioQuest’s PowerQuest G8 Power Conditioner/ Surge Protector.
Most AC power surge protectors are 3-mode surge-suppression devices.
Though these may guard against catastrophic power surges, they can also allow even modest transient-power spikes to dissipate via the electrical AC ground. This is significant since no surge protection technology dissipates the incoming surge/spike to either zero volts or amps. Most AC powerline surges or spikes are frequent-and they are not catastrophic. In fact, transient-power spikes can occur dozens of times daily in any home or office with standard utility power. Appliances and machinery often generate these power spikes, and, when they occur, a typical 3-mode protection device can send the remaining electrical energy to an audio/video component’s circuit ground. Over time, this can cause incremental damage to the component’s delicate surface- mount circuit chips. PowerQuest’s Micro-Spike Technology prevents this from happening while also protecting your valuable system from catastrophic power surges.

PowerQuest’s Micro-Spike Technology prevents this from happening while also protecting your valuable system from catastrophic power surges.

Safety Information I Warnings

Before operating the PowerQuest G8, please read and observe all safety and operating instructions. Retain these instructions for future reference.

  • Do not disassemble or in any way modify the PQ GS. There are no userserviceable parts inside.
  • Keep away from moisture and avoid excessive humidity.
  • Do not allow liquids or foreign objects to enter the unit.

Servicing I Return to AudioQuest

Servicing ofthe PQ G8 must be performed by AudioQuest and is only required when:

  • The PQ G8 has been exposed to rain, flooding, or extreme moisture.
  • The PQ G8 does not appear to operate normally. (See “Trouble-Shooting Guide:’)
  • The PQ G8 has been dropped and sustained considerable physical damage.
If sending the PQ G8 to AudioQuest for servicing (or shipping it for any reason), please use bubble wrap or other professional packaging materials so that it may arrive safely. If you have questions regarding the packaging requirements or best practices, please contact AudioQuest.

Power Source

Ideally, the power source to which the PQ G8 is connected should be adequate for use at 120VAC single-phase nominal voltage, 15 amps (current capacity RMS).
However, the PQ G8 will operate very well with a 120VAC 20-amp service outlet. For proper operation, the PQ G8 requires a safety ground (supplied via the power utility AC wall outlet). When the G8 power switch is engaged, the green “Grounded” indicator will light. If it fails to do so, there is no ground present at the service power outlet.

Operation

Plug the attached AC cord into a 120VAC 50/60Hz power outlet, then set the red breaker/power switch (located on the side by the power cord’s chassis entrance) to “Reset:’ When doing so, both the “Grounded” and “Protected” indicators will light. The G8 is ready for use.

Trouble-Shooting Guide

There is no power to any of the AC outlets.

  • Is the breaker/power switch set to “Reset”?

  • Is the input AC cord properly plugged into the wall AC service outlet?

  • Is the wall’s AC outlet functioning properly?
Plug another component, product, or lamp into the wall outlet to verify that power is present and that the electrical panel’s circuit breaker has not tripped. If there are only one or two AC outlets that have no output power, a component may be malfunctioning. Test the AC output with a simple known device such as a lamp.

  • Is the 15-amp circuit breaker tripped?
On the side panel, near the power cord, there is one 15-amp circuit breaker/power switch. It should be set to “Reset:’ Though it is quite unlikely, if the switch will not stay in the Reset position, a large appliance or a defective component may be experiencing a short circuit. If this were to occur, this circuit breaker/power switch will disconnect, thus saving the PQ G8 and its connected equipment.
If you discover that one or multiple products activate the circuit breaker, check the current consumption rating of that/those products. (Typically, this information can be found on the last page of the component’s owner’s manual; it should be listed as the power consumption at 120VAC.) The current specification will typically be in watts. Know that 15 amps at 120VAC equals 1800 watts. (You will want to be at least slightly under that number.)

The”Protected” red indicator is no longer lit and/or none of the

diagnostics listed above have yielded success.

The surge protection is likely damaged or sacrificed its life to protect your
connected equipment. The unit must be replaced.

My home or grounds were hit by lightning. The PQ GS seems to be

functioning properly. Should it be sent in for inspection or service?

If you see or smell smoke coming from the unit, it needs service or replacement.
Otherwise, if it functions after such an event (which is very likely), the unit is fine. If it fails after such an event, it will fail totally, and the unit will cease to output AC power. The “protected” indicator will not light as well.
