Cleaning and care of microscopes
Microscope
One of the basic requirements for successful microscopy is the cleanliness of the individual optical components of the microscope. This is because they have a considerable impact on the image quality and your examination. For this reason, you should clean your microscope at regular intervals.
Cleaning instructions
- Step 1: Remove loose dust particles – Preparation Part 1
- Remove loose dust particles from the optical lenses using the KERN bellows. Large dust particles should first be removed from the optical lenses so that scratch-free cleaning is possible during basic cleaning with a liquid.
- Step 2: Remove loose dust particles – preparation part 2
- With the help of the fine brush, further small dust particles can be removed from the optical lenses of the microscope. This preliminary work should be carried out thoroughly so that deep cleaning with solvent is successful.
- Step 3: Loosen soiling with solvent and lint-free cotton wool
- Using solvent and lint-free cotton wool, clean the optical lenses in a spiral motion from the centre to the edge of the lens surface. The spiral cleaning movement from the inside to the outside of the lens removes dirt over the edge of the lens. This process should be carried out several times, depending on the need and soiling, but without pressure.
- Step 4: Completion and final inspection – Part 1
- Using the KERN microfibre cloth, rub any solvent residue or streaks on the optical lenses dry. Also rub the surfaces of the optical lenses dry in a spiral motion so that the last residues of solvent are removed.
- Step 5: Completion and final inspection – Part 2
- The last step of the cleaning is to remove the last traces of the microfibre cloth with the help of the antistatic cloths.
Storage for your KERN microscope
Facts & Tips: An optical light microscope is a low-maintenance product that offers a long service life as well as a long period of use. To maintain a long service life, it is recommended to clean it at regular intervals. (see instructions) Correct and safe storage of your KERN microscope is also an important aspect. The microscope should be stored in an almost dust-free and safe position. Therefore, it is recommended to cover the microscope with the KERN dust cover included in the scope of delivery after you have finished your examination. The dust cover protects the microscope from contamination and dust from the environment. In addition, this storage ensures that the microscope can be quickly put back into operation for your next examination. After using immersion oil, it is recommended to clean the respective lens immediately. If the immersion oil-contaminated lens is not cleaned in the liquid state immediately after use, this can permanently cloud the lens. Therefore, we recommend cleaning your oil immersion lenses immediately after use
