Innovative Connections
Edge 130 enables you to keep your phone safely tucked away and remain connected when riding a bike when using a compatible device. Your device’s screen will display any incoming text messages so you can quickly read them and continue riding. Use the weather page to monitor the present weather and the predicted conditions to find out whether you’re about to get rained out. And don’t forget, you can automatically publish your rides to the Garmin Connect social network. You can also use our Connect IQ store to add customizable data fields to your device, like the GU Fuel Reminder or the Strava Suffer Score.
Your Performance Must Improve
With the Edge 130 bike computer, you can increase your performance and make an effort to get better with each ride. It works with power metres so you can check how many watts you’re generating on a flat area or a steep slope. Knowing where your power comes from not only makes training easier, but it also makes for a great ride. Additionally, competing in real time against Garmin and Strava Live Segments can add a little spice to every ride and motivate you to go above and beyond.
Increased Awareness of Cycling
Every ride will be improved with a little mental calm. Edge 130 is therefore compatible with our Varia series of cycling awareness tools, such as rearview radar and intelligent bike lights. By connecting these gadgets to your Edge bike computer, you can receive notifications for oncoming cars right on your Edge display, which can improve driver visibility. With the LiveTrack feature on Edge 130, you can also let your loved ones know where you are in real-time. Additionally, the Assistance feature, when used with a connected smartphone, can instantly convey your current location to pre-selected contacts so they will know where to find you if you experience problems while on a journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pause a ride and charge it before finishing a ride it counts as one ride. My edge 25 instantly ends any ride in progress if charging.
I tried this out on mine, to see if I could tell. If you plug it into a cable that is not connected to a computer (just a USB charging port), then it will not interrupt your ride, as far as my attempts went. However, if you connect it to a computer where it triggers the USB/data connection, it does seem to interrupt the ride. So, any method that charges it without causing a data connection – should be good.
Will this work with my existing Garmin heart rate strap?
Yes, this product will work with your Garmin HRM.
Does the “unit only” come with any bike mount?
Yes, buying the “unit only” for the $199 does give you a basic mount system. Essentially what it is is a mount that is then held on with a couple of sturdy rubber bands that as of so far I’ve had no loss in faith for keeping the Garmin securely on my stem.
Is it compatible with another brand cadence sensor?
I have a Bontrager brand Ant+ speed/cadence sensor and the 130 works just fine with that. So long as your sensor is ant+, you should be good.
How does this work for knowing the route you want to take? do you need to load a map, trail ride, etc into the device?
From the product description: “Plan and download your routes with the Course Creator feature from Garmin Connect. Edge 130 will guide you with easy-to-read course prompts and turn prompts.”
How is the display at night? Can you see everything?
If you set the backlight to stay on, you can see it great. Without the backlight on, you won’t see anything at night.
Will this work with the RTL500 rear radar?
Yes, it does.
How accurate is this? I currently use a Garmin forerunner 25 (running watch) on my rides and the distance comes up short.
That is common when using GPS for distance. On a bike, if using GPS for the distance it will never be as accurate as if you are using a calibrated speed sensor (speed/cadence sensor) with the exact wheel size entered into the settings. Having said all that. I do not see any difference between this GPS and my Edge 820, or my Forerunner watch.
Is the Garmin 130 compatible with duo trap & duo trap s speed/cadence sensors?
Yes, it is. But personally, I don’t like the duo trap. It’s old tech that requires a magnet on a spoke that has to be all lined up and the way it all mounts it makes it a pain in the neck to change the batteries. You have to remove a pedal and remove the rear wheel. The duo trap is not particularly easy to get back into the frame and get it all lined up. The Garmin speed and cadence sensors just strap right on (crank arm and front hub) in a few seconds and they pair right up. I had the duo trap but then got a deal on the Garmin sensors and switched.
Does it have turn-by-turn directions?
Yes, this device can do turn-by-turn navigation but this will greatly reduce the battery life. Garmin says that you can use this device in navigation mode for up to 8 hours but battery life never lives up to expectations.
Does this unit pause & resume automatically?
Yes. It is a setting that you can set.
I am wanting to ride without taking my phone along with me on the actual ride, can you use this to record your ride then “pair” and upload post-ride?
Absolutely. I never use my phone during a ride, only sync and download after. For the record, I rode 125 kilometers with this device, yesterday and at the end, the battery was about 50%.
Does it work with recumbent bicycles?
As long as your Bike has a place to mount this and can move (not stationary), this will work as designed.
If I buy the unit-only bundle, does it have connectivity to a hrm in case I buy it separately?
Yes. Edge 130 can connect to peripherals such as a heart-rate monitor or power meter on ANT+ or Bluetooth from third parties.
Does the 130 have a compass feature?
It does. In fact, one of the features of multiple readouts is to have compass heading showing along with mph, avg mph, trip distance, cadence, etc. all at the same time. It’s a quite useful feature.
