Conventions Used in this Guide

This guide uses the following conventions:

Bold Italic      All commands from the user interface. Options, menus, buttons, and dialog box names are bolded, but not italicized.

Example: On the Welcome screen, click Next.

Courier      The path of a program or folder; a web address; a file name or component; text that the user is expected to enter.

Example: The default path is C:\Program Files\Altair\2021.1\PollEx

Solder Quantity Calculator

Solder paste is adhesive material to connect bare PCB and components. The solder quantity in reflow soldering process is decided by the size of open metal mask and metal mask thickness. For solder quantities calculation, metal mask opening size can be extracted from CAD design, but metal mask thickness should be inputted by users. In addition, the solder quantity in wave soldering process is decided by component pin’s lead size, lead type (including clinching) and other conditions. So, solder quantity calculation in wave soldering process is difficult to get exact results. PollEx PCB Solder Quantity Calculator just provides an evidence to get numerical calculation to get solder quantity based on whole mask space and user defined conditions.

ALTAIR PollEx 2021.1 Solder Quantity Calculator

PollEx PCB – Solder Quantity Calculator provides two options.

  1. Solder Mask Checker: Solder quantity calculator for wave soldering process.
  2. Metal Mask Checker: Solder quantity calculator for reflow soldering process.

1. Solder Mask Checker

Use the menu, Manufacture – Solder Quantity Calculator – Solder Mask.

Upon launching above menu, user can see new window, User Solder Mask. At this window, a user can see pad and solder mask on design.

(1) Select top or bottom layer
→ Solder quantity calculation will be done for top or bottom, respectively.
→ In DIP type component case placed on top layer, calculation will be done for bottom layer. So, users need to check the solder mask status of bottom layer.

                                   

(2) Select display order of pad or solder mask.

                                 

(3) List of components and its pins.
(4) Using Calculate button menu, users can get solder mask areas for layers and components.

                       
  1. SMD Component Area: Total area summation of SMD pads.
  1. Solder Mask
  2. PAD

– Condition: Only pad that having solder mask.
– In case of solder mask is bigger than pad dimension: pad dimension = 1.2mm 0.8mm.
– In case of pad is bigger than solder mask dimension: solder mask dimension = 1mm
0.8mm.
– Calculate dimension for solder mask and pad are overlapped.

  1. DIP Component Area: Total area summation for PTH (plated through hole) pad’s solder mask.
  1. Solder Mask
  2. PAD

– Condition: Only for bottom layer’s PTH pad that having solder mask.
– In case of solder mask is bigger than pad dimension: pad dimension = (0.7mm)2 π.
– In case of pad is bigger than solder mask dimension: solder mask dimension = (0.75mm)2
π.
– Calculate dimension for solder mask and pad are overlapped.
3) Board Figure: Total solder mask dimension for board’s non-electric geometries.
4) Total Area: The summation for above three.

(5) Zoom In / Zoom Out / 1:1 Default View
– Same as PollEx PCB operation.

(6) Option – Display Solder Mask Area List: After getting each component’s solder paste dimension, users can export results into MS/Excel file. (Including top and bottom layers)

2. Metal Mask Checker

Use the menu, Manufacture – Solder Quantity Calculator – Metal Mask.

Upon launching above menu, user can see new window, User Metal Mask. At this window, users can see pad and metal mask on design.

(1) U-Name List: Users can see component and its pin pads with list. When selected each item, the selected component is focused on the left side of window.
(2) Metal Mask Size: For selected pin, tool shows its metal mask size.
Pad Size: For selected pin, tool shows its pad size.
Mask/Pad Ratio (%): For selected pin, tool shows its metal mask size ration related to pad size.
(3) Mask Volume Calculation: After setting solder paste material, metal mask thickness and correction factor (A/F: Aspect Ratio), pressing Calculate button menu automatically calculate total solder paste weight.

– Material: Metal Mask Manager support default 3 types of compound material libraries. Also, users can add new material list by materials and its composing ratio. To complete making new compound material, use Advanced option.

* Default solder-paste materials’ unit weight depending on compounding materials.

  1. 63Sn/37Pb: 0.0053
  2. 62.8Sn/36.8Pb/0.4Ag: 0.0053
  3. 96.5Sn/3Ag/0.5Cu: 0.0051

– Mask Thickness: To calculate metal mask volume, specify the thickness of the metal mask.
– A /F Ratio (%): For correcting calculation results, user can use A/F ratio value. (Default: 100%) A/F values could be value from experience of engineers.
– Total Weight (g): This value could be gotten with equation, “Total Mask Volume * Solder Paste Composing Material’s Weight”.

(4) View Setting

  1. Top / Bottom
                                     

o Components having metal mask will be displayed.

  1. Mask-Top / Pad-Top
                                 

o Almost cases, pad size is much bigger than metal mask size. So, “Mask-Top” view option is preferred.

  1. Zoom In / Zoom Out / Reset / Print

o Same as PollEx PCB operation.

(5) Option – Display Metal Area List
Using this option, user can check all components metal mask size and export the lists to MS/Excel sheet. Be sure that the viewing list is not mask-volume considering mask thickness, but dimension.
