Thank you for purchasing TORNADO120000 (hereinafter “T120A”), a smart programmable battery charger.
Before using T120A, please read this manual carefully. If you have any question, you can contact support@topdon.com for technical support.
SAFETY
Before using this product, please read carefully and understand all safety instructions thoroughly. Failure to follow these safety instructions may lead to Electrical Shock, Explosion, and Fire, which can result in property damage, serious injury, and even death.
- We strongly recommend this product NOT be used for any application other than for what it was designed.
- Before using this product, refer to your battery manufacturer’s manual to determine the voltage and chemistry of the battery.
- Do not attempt to charge a damaged or frozen battery. Incompatible or damaged batteries can explode if the charger is improperly used.
- Do not use the charger if the power cords are damaged.
- Clean the battery terminal if it is dirty or corroded. Keep it dry.
- Do not smoke or use any source of electrical spark or flame during its operation to avoid fire.
- Make sure the area around the battery is well-ventilated while the battery is being charged. To reduce the risk of battery explosion, follow all safety instructions published by the battery manufacturer.
- Wear safety goggles during its whole operation. Batteries can cause flying debris and emit toxic gases. Remove all personal items made of metal, such as rings, necklaces, and watches, when working with a lead-acid battery.
- Place fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid touches skin, clothing, or eyes. If acid makes contact with eyes, then immediately wash it with running cold water for at least ten minutes and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
- Place the battery charger as far away from the battery as possible. Do not put the charger directly above the battery.
- Do not submerge the charger in water or get it wet.
- Keep the charger away from children. It is not a toy.
- Disconnect or connect the cables only when the charger is powered off. Store the charger in a well-ventilated and dry place every time you finish charging.

Functions
Multiple Charging Modes
In order to meet the needs of charging various 12V devices, T120A supports
multiple charging modes: SUPPLY, Lead-Acid, LiFePO4, and Custom. The
explanations are given below:
Charging Mode | Parameters | Description |
---|---|---|
SUPPLY | 11~16.8V 5~120A | In this mode, the output voltage is constant, and the |
output current is up to the load to be charged (but won’t exceed the maximum
current set by the user). The maximum output power is 1700W.
This mode is suitable for two scenarios: & . (The battery clamp voltage is
greater than 3V or close to 0V.)During charging, the charging voltage and
current can be modified.
Press on T120A. Then press or to choose or . After that, press . Then press or
to modify the voltage. After that, press . Then press or to modify the
current. After that, press . (Charging will be based on the new voltage and
current.)
LeadAcid| NORM| 14.2V| This mode follows a stepwise charging algorithmthat
delivers constant voltage or current atdifferent steps. It can be used to
charge 12Vlead-acid batteries, including WET, GEL, MF,CAL, EFB, and AGM.
| AGM| 14.4V|
After setting up the battery capacity, you can
choose to charge the battery at the rate of
0.1C or 0.2C.
0.1C or 0.2C means the charging current is 10%
or 20% of the battery capacity. For example, if a
100Ah battery is charged at the rate of 0.1C, the
charging current will be 10A; if it is charged at
the rate of 0.2C, the charging current will be 20A.
Charging a battery at the rate of 0.1C is slow. It
can extend battery life and reduce the risk of
battery damage, but it takes longer to fully
charge the battery. Charging it at the rate of 0.2C
is faster and can still protect it from overheating
or even damage.
LiFePO4| 14.6V| This mode follows a stepwise charging algorithm that delivers
constant voltage or current at different steps. It can be used to charge 12V
LiFePO4 batteries.
After setting up the battery capacity, you can choose to charge the battery at
the rate of 0.1C or 0.2C.
Custom| Defined by the user| The user can choose from SUPPLY, Lead Acid, and
LiFePO4, and then define the charging voltage and current.
After setting, this mode will be auto-saved for quick use later. For example,
suppose you choose Lead Acid and set the voltage and current to be 14.5V and
30A respectively. After the setting, T120A will charge the Lead Acid battery
by following a stepwise charging algorithm. When the battery is fully charged,
the voltage will be 14.5V.
Smart Charging Algorithm
The explanations are given below:
- DIAGNOSIS: It checks the battery’s initial condition including voltage, state-of-charge, and health, to determine if the battery is stable before charging.
- DESULPHATION: It uses voltage or high-frequency pulses to break down the sulfates that have built up over time in the aging battery to optimize life and performance. (only for the Lead-Acid mode)
- PRE-CHARGE: It starts the charging process with a low stable current that gradually increases until the battery capacity returns 25%. This reduces the stress put on batteries by sudden surges.
- SOFT START: It provides a medium stable current until the battery capacity returns 50%.
- BULK CHARGE: It begins the bulk charging process based on the condition of the battery until the battery capacity returns 80%.
- ABSORPTION: It brings the charge level to 100% by delivering small amounts of current to provide a safe, efficient charge. This limits battery gas emission and prolongs life.
- ANALYSIS: It monitors whether the battery voltage falls below its target threshold. If yes, the charger will enter the Recondition mode.
- RECONDITION: It checks the battery status, and then recovers small currents to improve the capacity. (only for the Lead-Acid mode)
- MAINTENANCE: It checks the battery status and brings the charge level back to 100%. Then the ANALYSIS, RECONDITION, and MAINTENANCE will form into a charge cycle to keep the battery at full charge. The battery charger can be safely left connected indefinitely without the risk of overcharging. (only for the Lead-Acid mode)
Multiple Protection Mechanisms
T120A is designed with multiple protection mechanisms to ensure safety for
both the device and batteries, including over-voltage protection, low-voltage
protection, over-load protection, over-temperature protection, short-circuit
protection, reverse polarity protection, and bad-battery protection.

FAQ
Q: How do I choose the charging current?
A: The optimal charging current is up to the battery capacity. We recommend that the current be no greater than 20% of the battery capacity. For example, for a 100Ah battery, the charging current should not be greater than 20A.
Q: Will T120A automatically stop charging a battery after it is fully
charged?
A: Yes. T120A follows a smart stepwise charging algorithm. When the battery is fully charged, T120A will automatically stop charging it. There is no risk of overcharging. If you still keep the battery connected after it is fully charged, the charger will continuously monitor its status and will automatically resume charging when the battery voltage falls below the threshold.
Q: How come some batteries cannot get charged properly?
A: In general, a 12V battery with a voltage below 8.5V may have been damaged and thus cannot get charged properly. You can try the SUPPLY mode for charging the battery
