Quilted Strait L Walters Beginner Quilting Tablerunner

Calling All Beginners! – Create Your Own Signature Tablerunner

October 16 & 17, 10:30-3:00 both days
Instructor: Liz Walters
This class is designed for first-time quilters. Over two half-days, students will create a unique table runner while learning all steps of the quilting process – cutting, layout, piecing, quilting, and binding. Go home with a beautiful new runner and the confidence to embark on your next project!

FABRIC NEEDED: Four (4) “fat quarters” of 100% quilting cotton for the top of your runner, plus 1 yard of quilting cotton for the back and binding. Some info and suggestions regarding fabric:

  • A “fat quarter” is created by cutting a full yard of fabric (36″ by 42″) into four quadrants that each measure 18″x21″, yielding an nearly square piece of fabric. They are sold precut in fabric shops, and many shops will cut a fat quarter off the bolt for you as well.
  • Choose 4 different quilting cottons in colors/patterns you like. Try to include light, medium and dark fabrics among your 4 fabrics to create contrast in your piece. Ideally, 1 or 2 of your fabrics should be a solid color or a print fabric that reads like a solid from a distance.
  • The additional yard of fabric can either be one of the four fabrics used on the front or a 5th fabric that coordinates with them. Choose a fabric you like for the back because runners are really two-sided!
  • Wash, tumble dry, and iron your fabric with hot water and a hot dryer setting. We want the fabric to shrink before creating the runner, not the first time it’s washed.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • Sewing machine in good working order with manual*

  • Cotton thread in a neutral color (tan, light gray, etc)

  • Pins

  • Phone or camera to take and refer to digital photos during class

  • If you already own a cutting mat, quilting ruler, and/or rotary cutter, bring it along, however we will also provide these for student use.

  • It is important to be familiar with your machine before the start of class, including set-up, basic controls, straight stitching, and how to wind the bobbin.
