instructions for use
Sterin™ insect irradiation indicators are designed to provide independent quality assurance for the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) by providing positive, visual verification of irradiation at the minimum specified dose.
Storage instructions
- store at or below 25°C (77°F)
- avoid prolonged exposure to light (sunlight, UV)
- keep away from radiation sources
Use instructions
- Do not expose to >50°C. Avoid prolonged exposure to elevated temperature. Check bottom left temperature indicator before using. Do not use if the temperature indicator is BLACK.
- Pull the clear strip to dispense one sterin™ indicator from the dispenser box. This will expose the adhesive on the front side of the indicator.
- Check sterin™ indicator to confirm that it displays the visual message “NOT IRRADIATED”. Do not use indicator if the word “NOT” is not visible.
- Holding the sterin™ indicator by the edges, adhere the indicator to the inside of a “see-through” container so that the printed side of the indicator faces out.
- Irradiate the container with the attached sterin™ indicator to the dose required for the product. The exposure dose should be equal to or larger than the minimum dose printed on the Sterin™ indicator (e.g. 70 Gy, 100 Gy, 125 Gy, 145 Gy).
- After exposure, inspect the radiation-sensitive film in the center of the indicator to confirm that it is fully opaque, covering the word “NOT” so that the indicator displays the visual message “IRRADIATED”.

NOTE: Sterin™ insect irradiation indicators only indicate that irradiation has occurred in conjunction with Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). They must only be used with irradiators that are working properly and are properly calibrated. However, becasue of variations in the lighting conditions, product batches, and user eyesight, Sterin™ indicators may appear fully opaque even after exposure to less than the minimum does for the product. Therefore, Sterin™ indicators should never be used to calibrate an irradiator.
