Thank you for purchasing the WAF-4 water detector alarm. Read these operating instructions carefully before designing the installation location and using the device for the first time. Keep these instructions in a safe place for future reference. Water detector alarms detect leaks and water penetration in apartments and houses. For indoor use only!

Note: The sensors can be sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Operation

The water detector alarm immediately emits an alarm when water comes into contact with the metal sensor.

The water detector alarm has 3 sensors:

  • One sensor is located directly in the base of the transmitter
  • Two further sensors can be connected on the back of the transmitter When water is detected, the transmitter and dialing unit* emit an audible signal and the dialing unit dials the programmed phone number and plays the recorded voice message.
    • If set, see “MODE switch on the receiver” section

Recommended monitoring areas

  • Next to the washing machine and/or dishwasher
  • Below wash basins
  • Next to baths
  • Below windows
  • Near external doors
  • In cellars where there is a risk of damp

Unsuitable monitoring areas
Rooms in which the temperature may fall below +5°C or exceed +40°C. Reliable operation cannot always be guaranteed in such locations.

Start-up (programming and connection)

Important: Use only the specified battery type for the transmitter and receiver.

Transmitter

  1. If required, connect one or both additional sensors to the transmitter. The two screws on the right (19) are for sensor 1 and the two screws on the left are for sensor 2.

  2. Insert the batteries in the transmitter, making sure that the polarity is correct.
    The button (17) on the side of the transmitter can be used to pause the transmitter for 5 minutes. When this button is pressed once, the transmitter ignores any water detected at its sensors for the next 5 minutes. This is useful, for example, when washing the floor. The slide switch (16) on the transmitter can be used to select from 3 operating modes:

    • In position 1, the signal is only sent to the receiver once when water is detected.
    • In position 2, the signal is sent again after 6 minutes.
    • In position 3, the signal is sent 3 times (with a pause of 6 minutes in between.
      If water is no longer detected within this 6 or 12-minute period, the transmitter does not send another signal and the alarm stops immediately.
      Receiver (dialing unit)
  3. Insert a 9 Volt battery in the battery compartment and connect the power supply unit to the mains socket (5) of the receiver. Both devices are now ready for operation. The phone numbers now need to be programmed in the receiver and the voice message recorded.
    Recording the voice message

  4. Move the MODE switch (12) to position 3.

  5. Press and hold down the RECORD button (11); the red LED (2) lights up.

  6. Speaking into the microphone (20), record the message to be played when an alarm is generated. For optimum voice quality, your mouth should be approx. 10 cm from the microphone.

  7. Release the RECORD button.

  8. Press the PLAY button (10) to play back your recorded message.

  9. Return the MODE switch to position 1 or 2.
    Note: The maximum possible duration for the voice message recorded by the drilling unit is 10 seconds. Due to the compact size of the speaker, the quality of the test function for the voice message is limited. When the message is later played over the phone, the speech quality will be as normal.
    Programming phone numbers
    The dialling unit can store a maximum of 3 phone numbers, which can be called in succession in the event of an alarm.
    ATTENTION: You must NOT program emergency numbers such as 999 or 112!

  10. Move the MODE switch (12) to position 3

  11. Press the ST button (9) once, a short beep is emitted.

  12. Enter the phone number via the keypad (6). A tone is emitted each time a key is pressed.
    Note: If you have a phone system that requires you to dial 0 for an outside number, include the 0 when programming numbers.

  13. Press one of the three memory buttons, M1 to M3, (8) once to store the number. A short beep is emitted.

  14. Press the memory button again to play back the tone sequence for the phone number.

  15. Repeat steps 11 to 13 to program the other 2 phone numbers.

  16. If a phone number needs to be changed, repeat steps 11 to 13.

  17. Return the MODE switch to position 1 or 2 (see “MODE switch on receiver” section).
    Deleting phone numbers

  18. Move the MODE switch (12) to position 3.

  19. Press the LEARN CODE button (7) once, a beep is emitted, and the green LED (3) flashes red/green.

  20. Press the ST button (9) once, a beep is emitted

  21. Press the memory button for the phone number you want to delete once. A beep is emitted.

  22. Repeat steps 20 and 21 for each phone number you want to delete.

  23. Press the LEARN CODE button once. A beep is emitted and the LED stops flashing red/ green and returns to steady green.

  24. Return the MODE switch to position 1 or 2 (see “MODE switch on receiver” section). Connecting the dialing unit to the phone network Once you have carried out all the programming steps described above, you can connect the receiver to the phone network.

  25. Insert the RJ-11 plug on the cable supplied into the socket (4) on the receiver.

  26. Insert the plug for the phone jack in an empty socket for your phone connection.
    Note: The dialling unit is an analog terminal device. It can also be operated on phone systems that support analog terminal equipment. Direct operation on an ISDN network is not possible. Most phone systems or phone network providers support tone dialing. In rare cases, pulse dialing may have to be used. You can select the appropriate option using the slide switch (13).
    MODE switch (12) on the receiver
    This switch is used to select one of the 3 operating modes: In position 1, in the event of an alarm, an alarm tone is emitted for 30 seconds after and /or between dialing attempts. In position 2, in the event of an alarm an alarm tone is not emitted, only the programmed phone numbers are called. In position 3, the programming mode is active. In the event of an alarm, an alarm tone is not emitted nor is a number called.

  27. Sender/ receiver coding If the receiver does not respond to the transmitter, the coding of the wireless signal can be changed as follows:

  28. There are 6 DIP switches (18) on the back of the transmitter. Set these to another position.

  29. Move the MODE switch (12) to position 3.

  30. Press the LEARN CODE button (7) once, a beep is emitted, and the green LED (3) flashes red /green.

  31. Allow a brief moment for the transmitter to detect water (place a wet finger over the sensors).

  32. The receiver emits a short beep.

  33. Press the LEARN CODE button once to complete the learning process.

  34. Return the MODE switch to position 1 or 2 (see “MODE switch on receiver” section).
    Note: If several transmitters are to be used, repeat step 30 for each transmitter during the learning process.

RESET button (1)
This button can be used to interrupt the alarm and the dialing unit when dialing. If, however, the dialing unit receives another pulse from the transmitter, the dialing is started again.

Battery Monitor
When the batteries in the transmitter become flat, the green LED on the receiver flashes red every 10 seconds and a beep is emitted every 5 minutes. In addition, the red LED on the transmitter flashes every 10 seconds. Please note that the device does not monitor the state of the standby battery in the receiver. Test the battery at least once a year. If in doubt, change the battery.

Safety/warning notices
please note that the water detector merely detects leaks and infiltrations of water but cannot prevent them. If properly used, the water detector allows you to quickly locate a leak or a water infiltration point.

  • The water detector can only function reliably at all times if it is regularly checked. Therefore for your safety, we recommend that you regularly carry out the checks described in the section ‘Test’.
  • All members of the household should be informed about how the water detector works to avoid irritation if the alarm is triggered. The water detector is not a toy. Persons who like children have a reduced level of risk awareness and animals should not be allowed access to the locations where the detector has been laid out to prevent such persons and animals from receiving injuries and to exclude the possibility of the detector being damaged through carelessness. Therefore, the room where the water detector is laid out should be secured to prevent children and animals from gaining access.
  • The water detector should only be used for its intended purpose (see information on the label and preceding instructions). The water detector should not be opened by unauthorized persons.
  • The water detector should only be made available to other persons together with the operating instructions.
  • Placing the detector on floor coverings for continuous periods can, in the presence of humidity, lead to the formation of deposits on the floor covering. Therefore, the place where the detector is laid out should be regularly cleaned.
  • To avoid water leaks in machines, we recommend the use of systems with Aqua-Stop functions.

Safety instructions

In the event of damage to the housing, connectors, power cables, or isolation shielding, switch off the device immediately and disconnect from the mains power. ELECTRIC SHOCK – DANGER OF LOSS OF LIFE. (Unplug the mains connector from the socket!). Damage should be repaired immediately by a specialist! Never carry out repairs yourself! Do not take the product apart! There is a danger of lethal electric shock!

Warranty

2 years warranty from the date of purchasing, on the base of correct use. The producer is not responsible for consequential damages which are affected directly or indirectly by this item. Subject to change without prior notification. In the framework of product updates and device optimization, the contents may vary from the packaging specification.

SAFETY NOTES

  • Do not paint, decorate with foil or stickers, or cover the water detector as this will impair its functioning.
  • Avoid strong electromagnetic fields (mobile phones, wireless equipment, microwaves) as this will impair the functioning.
  • The danger of damage to hearing! The alarm sound is very loud. Do not test the water detector near your ears.
  • The danger of poisoning! Batteries are extremely dangerous if swallowed.
  • Keep batteries and water detectors out of the reach of small children. If a battery has been swallowed see a doctor immediately.
  • The danger of explosion! Do not recharge, shorten, or take batteries apart or throw them into fire.
  • Do not let children play with the water detector or its packaging material.
  • Make all household members familiar with the water detector’s functioning and its signals.
  • For reasons of safety and licensing (CE), unauthorized conversion and /or modification of the product is prohibited.
  • Do not leave packaging material lying about since plastic foils and pockets and polystyrene parts etc. could be lethal toys for children.
  • In industrial institutions, the accident prevention regulations of the
  • Association of Commercial Professional Associations for electrical installations and equipment must be observed. Please consult a specialist should you have doubts regarding the method of operation, the safety, or the connections of the device.
  • Handle the product with care – it is sensitive to bumps, knocks, or falls even from low heights.
  • The warranty will be null and void in case of damages arising from violations of these operating instructions. We are not liable for consequential damages!
  • We accept no liability for material damages or injuries arising from inappropriate use or violation of the safety instructions. In such cases, all warranty claims are null and void!
